Early Warning Signs Of Oral Cancer: Tobacco consumption is killing millions of people every year around the world. Despite this, a large number of people are smoking and using tobacco related products. The matter of concern is that the harm caused by tobacco is not limited to the lungs or heart only, but it can also cause serious diseases like oral cancer. Experts say that some common signs seen in the mouth can sometimes prove to be an early warning of cancer, but people often ignore them.

Why are cases of oral cancer increasing?

Dr. Amit Chakraborty told TOI that cases of oral cancer are increasing rapidly in the country, but awareness about it is still very low. Many people ignore mouth ulcers, bleeding gums or other problems occurring inside the mouth, considering them as normal. Whereas if a blister does not heal for more than two weeks, then it should not be taken lightly. Such symptoms may be associated with oral cancer and if not checked on time, the situation may become serious.

What are its symptoms?

Experts say that not only blisters, but seeing white or red spots inside the mouth, pain while chewing, feeling any kind of lump or swelling, loosening of teeth, difficulty in speaking or swallowing can also be warning signs. Apart from this, persistent bad breath or feeling of numbness in any part of the mouth should also not be ignored. Especially such symptoms can be seen more in those who consume tobacco.

Are all mouth ulcers cancerous?

Dr. Amit Chakraborty says that not every mouth ulcer is cancer. Normal blisters usually heal in three to four days and do not cause much trouble. But if the blister is continuously growing, causing pain, bleeding easily or causing difficulty in eating, drinking and speaking, then an expert should be contacted immediately. If white or red spots are also seen along with it, then investigation should not be delayed.

It is taking young people into its grip.

Earlier oral cancer was mainly seen in people aged between 50 to 75 years, but the picture has changed rapidly in the last few years. Now its cases are also increasing among young smokers and vapers aged between 25 to 45 years. Experts believe that smoking, chewing tobacco, vaping, alcohol consumption and poor oral health are increasing this risk.

How can this be fixed?

If we talk about its treatment, if oral cancer is identified in the early stages, the results of the treatment can be much better. According to Dr. Amit Chakraborty, the chances of survival for patients who are treated in the early stages can be 80 to 90 percent.
