Pakistan’s Electronic Media Regulatory Authority has issued a notice to Pakistani news channel Geo News for running news, songs and tribute to veteran singer Asha Bhosle on her death.
Azhar Abbas, managing director of Geo News, wrote on Twitter, ‘Pakistan’s Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued a show cause notice to Geo News for airing material related to veteran singer Asha Bhosle. Usually when reporting on a great artist, it has been a tradition to remember and celebrate his work. Especially for someone like Asha Bhosle, her timeless and memorable songs should have been shared more widely.’
‘Art and knowledge should not be divided across borders’
He further wrote, ‘Despite this, Pakistan’s media regulator PEMRA has decided to ban it. Art, like knowledge, is the common heritage of all humanity and should not be limited by borders. Asha Bhosle herself was a big fan of Pakistan’s famous singer Noor Jahan and affectionately called her her “elder sister”.

Azhar Abbas wrote, ‘He also worked with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and lent his voice to the poetry of great Urdu poets like Nasir Kazmi. In times of war and conflict, art and artists should not have to pay its price. Intellectuals, musicians and creators are often the same voice. Who stand against hatred and division and bring people closer to each other.
It is known that there is a ban on showing Indian content on TV channels in Pakistan since 2018.
Let us tell you that Asha Bhosle died on 12th April. She was 92 years old. His funeral took place on 13 April.
