To fill its empty treasury, the Pakistan government is planning to increase the export of donkey meat and its related products to China on a large scale. This information has been given in a major national document. Pakistan Economic Review 2025-26 was presented by Finance Minister Mohammad Aurangzeb in a press conference on Thursday (11 June 2026).

Pakistan will sell donkey meat to China

Under the title ‘New export opportunities for donkey meat and other products’ the review said, ‘The export of donkey meat, hides and related products offers a niche market. There is a lot of potential for its growth on the basis of increasing demand in China. In China, donkey meat, milk and ajiao (gelatin) are valued for their nutritional and medicinal properties. ‘It said that to support this trade, the federal government has signed sanitary guidelines with China. This will encourage foreign investment, strengthen bilateral relations and generate employment and livelihood opportunities for local farmers.

The review said that a new license has been given to M/s Shahzad & Shaw Company to set up donkey slaughterhouse in ‘Gwadar Free Zone’. With this, the number of licensed companies has increased to two in addition to M/s Hengheng Trade. According to the Economic Review, the number of donkeys in Pakistan has increased from 60 lakh in 2024-25 to 62 lakh in 2025-26.

This number was 59 lakh in 2023-24. Traditionally, donkeys have been used to carry or pull heavy goods. They have been an important part of rural families as they are used to transport crops, fodder, wood and other goods in agricultural areas.

Poverty in Pakistan has increased by seven percent in the last six years due to which about 2.7 crore people have come under the ambit of poverty and with this the total number of poor in the country has increased to seven crore. This has come to light in the National Economic Survey of the country.

Pakistan Economic Survey 2025-26 was released on Thursday as part of the annual process. This process is done to share economic indicators before the federal budget is presented. This survey has revealed that the poverty level in the year 2018-19 was 21.9 percent, which increased to 28.9 percent in 2024-25. According to the survey, rural poverty increased from 28.2 percent to 36.2 percent while urban poverty increased from 11 percent to 17.4 percent.
