Before the 2027 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, the discussion has intensified that if the Bharatiya Janata Party wins the elections, then who will be the Chief Minister? This question is being raised because BJP’s UP unit President Pankaj Chaudhary had recently said that who will be the CM will be decided in the party’s Parliamentary Board meeting. After this statement of Choudhary, a period of speculations continues.
If we talk about the pattern of presenting or choosing the CM face by BJP in the last few assembly elections, then it has been seen that the leader about whom it was claimed that he would become the Chief Minister, either dropped out of the race or himself became the proposer of the new Chief Minister.
What happened in MP, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh?
In the elections of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, a section was assuming that Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Vasundhara Raje and Raman Singh would be the Chief Ministers respectively. However, after the results, the Chief Ministers were changed in all three states. Mohan Yadav became CM in MP, Bhajan Lal Sharma in Rajasthan and Vishnu Dev Sai became CM in Chhattisgarh.
That scene in Rajasthan is not forgotten by any political pundit when Lucknow MP and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh handed over the slip to Vasundhara Raje and the former CM herself was shocked after seeing it. However, sensing the presence of cameras nearby, Raje immediately changed his facial expressions.
Strength in numbers in Maharashtra, clear picture in Haryana, game in Assam!
Now let us talk about the elections of Maharashtra, Haryana and Assam. In Maharashtra, the numerical strength of the parties in the Assembly decided who would be the CM, but the BJP-led grand alliance did not contest the elections on any face there either. It was already discussed in political circles that the leader of the party which has the upper hand will be the CM.
During the elections in Haryana itself, Home Minister Amit Shah had made it clear that BJP will make Naib Singh Saini the CM. BJP made Saini the CM by replacing Manohar Lal Khattar. By declaring Saini as the CM face, BJP was successful in mobilizing non-Jat and OBC votes.
Whereas in Assam, BJP did not clearly announce that Himanta Biswa Sarma will be the CM. When Himanta spoke to journalists after the results of Assam elections 2026 and was asked about the next CM, he said that it will be decided in the legislative party meeting. In such a situation, BJP contested the elections on his face but did not make any formal announcement.
Same pattern in Delhi, Bengal also?
Similar was the situation in Delhi also. Before the elections in Delhi, BJP had not made any formal announcement regarding the CM face. After the election results, BJP made Rekha Gupta the CM. Even in West Bengal, BJP did not make any formal announcement and later Suvendu Adhikari became the CM.
Now what is the meaning of these statements in UP?
Now let’s talk about Uttar Pradesh. BJP national president Nitin Naveen had said in an interview that CM Yogi Adityanath will definitely be the CM face in the 2027 elections. A few months after Naveen’s statement, Pankaj Choudhary started saying that the decision will be taken in the Parliamentary Board meeting as to who will be the CM if BJP wins the elections.
In Ghaziabad, Pankaj had said – Parliament Board will decide whether the elections will be fought under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath or not.
‘The CM of UP may be a Yogi but I am a big leader of the party’
On this issue, CSDS Director Sanjay Kumar says that who the BJP will make the CM in UP is their internal matter. First of all, why is Pankaj Chaudhary saying this because he does not have this authority. The central leadership of BJP may not have given him permission to make such a statement. It is possible that to maintain his legitimacy, Pankaj Chaudhary gave this statement that the CM of UP may be Yogi but I am a big leader of the party.
In this context, political analyst Yogesh Mishra said that in the era of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, the Parliamentary Board has no meaning. To some extent, the national president works, but only if he is from the same state. Nitin Naveen is from Bihar so he was out. Whatever will happen in UP, whatever decision will be taken, only 2 people know. It is not easy to find out what is in the minds of two people.

What is BJP’s strategy for UP?
Regarding the conflict between the statements of Nitin Naveen and Pankaj Chaudhary, Kumar said that sometimes there is a strategy in cricket that one player will play freely and the other will save the wicket. The statement given by Naveen is an assurance, not a guarantee. On the other hand, Choudhary is keeping hope alive for those people who want to see themselves at that place.
On Pankaj Choudhary’s statement that the decision was taken in the Parliamentary Board meeting, Yogesh says that the Parliamentary Board is talked about because CM Yogi has gained popularity in his society. He is popular in other states also. However, some Brahmins are angry with the issues of UGC and Shankaracharya. In UP, Brahmins have influence on 17 Lok Sabha and 84 Assembly seats. If BJP directly announces that Yogi will be the CM, then in such a situation the Brahmin can get away from him. In such a situation, Pankaj Chaudhary is creating a safeguard with his statement.
