Who was Vijaya Mehta?
Vijaya Mehta was a famous Marathi film, theater director and actress of India. She was a very big name of Indian theater and parallel cinema. He was born on 4 November 1934 in Vadodara, Gujarat and died on 30 June 2026 at the age of 91. In the world of theatre, people used to respectfully call her ‘Bai’.
Started theater group
He started a theater group named ‘Rangayan’ in the 1960s along with playwright Vijay Tendulkar, Dr. Shriram Lagoo and Arvind Deshpande. He had directed many historical plays like ‘Barrier’, ‘Sakharam Binder’, ‘Hamidabaichi Kothi’ and ‘Wada Chirebandi’. Vijaya Mehta made her own identity in the world of films also. He directed famous films like ‘Rao Saheb’ (1986) and ‘Pestonji’ (1988). At the same time, her strong performance in Govind Nihalani’s film ‘Party’ (1984) was highly appreciated by the audience.
