There was a lot of chaos at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport in Chandigarh on the afternoon of Tuesday (May 5, 2026), when due to smoke filling in the cabin of a flight, the plane was landed and all the passengers were taken out through slides from the emergency exit.
In fact, in Indigo Airlines flight 6E 108 (HYD-IXC), which had departed from Hyderabad to Chandigarh, a passenger’s power bank exploded in mid-air and smoke started coming out. Seeing smoke coming out of the power bank, the passenger immediately informed the flight crew. The flight crew took immediate action and controlled the fire in the power bank using fire extinguishers, but due to this the flight cabin was completely filled with smoke and an atmosphere of panic was created among the passengers.

After this incident, the plane landed safely at Chandigarh International Airport at around 3.30 pm. As a precaution, emergency protocols were immediately implemented. After the emergency landing of the plane, at around 3:35 pm, the crew members opened the emergency exit and all the passengers were taken out through slides.
Air Force fire tender team arrived after the flight landing
After the landing of the flight and evacuation of all the passengers from the plane, the fire tender team of the Indian Air Force also reached the spot at around 3:38 pm. However, there was no need for it, because the situation was already under control due to the promptness of the aircraft crew members.
Woman’s leg fractured during evacuation, ongoing treatment
Saurabh Acharya, a passenger, said that he was traveling by this plane with his wife Richa Arya and two children. He said that when the cabin crew was taking all the passengers out of the plane, while descending through the slides, Richa’s leg got twisted and the leg got fractured. At present he is being treated in a private hospital in Zirakpur.
The airline issued an official statement
After this incident, Indigo Airline has issued an official statement. An IndiGo spokesperson said, ‘On May 5, 2026, an incident of fire in the personal electronic device of a passenger was reported while standing after landing of IndiGo flight 6E 108 from Hyderabad to Chandigarh. In view of safety, the aircraft was immediately evacuated and all concerned authorities were immediately informed.’
He said, ‘All the passengers have been safely transported to the terminal and a team is present to take care of them, so that their health and comfort can be taken care of. Necessary checks will be done before bringing the aircraft back into operation. The safety of our passengers and crew is the biggest priority at IndiGo.
