Dr. Mark Slabaugh, orthopedic sports medicine surgeon at Mercy Medical Center, says that putting too much pressure on the body too quickly can lead to overtraining.

How much exercise is right for the body?
According to the US Department of Health, adults should do 150 to 300 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 to 150 minutes of intense exercise every week. Along with this, strength training at least two days a week is advised. However, experts also believe that every person’s body is different and training more than one’s capacity can be dangerous.

According to doctors, overtraining happens when the body does not get enough time for recovery. Continuous heavy workouts, less sleep, poor diet and excessive exercise can increase pressure on the body. Dr. Oluseun Olufade, assistant professor at Emory School of Medicine, says that if a beginner does heavy training for several days in a row, it can increase the risk of serious injury. However, it is too early to say that Prateek Yadav’s death was directly related to his fitness lifestyle. Doctors say that the real cause of his death will be clear only after the post-mortem report.
