Assembly elections are to be held in Punjab next year. Meanwhile, about 8 months before the elections, internal strife is once again emerging in the Congress. There seems to be dissatisfaction within the party regarding the leadership. Former Chief Minister of the state Charanjit Singh Channi made a show of strength at his house in Morinda. During this, a large number of Congress leaders gathered and expressed their displeasure over keeping Amarinder Singh Raja Vading as the state chief.
It has been made clear by the leaders of Channi faction that Amarinder Singh Raja Wadding is not accepted by them as the Punjab Congress President. The leaders of this group have also demanded that Channi be declared the chief ministerial candidate and the command of Punjab Congress be given to him.
Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel reaching Chandigarh
Amidst the ongoing conflict in Congress, Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel is reaching Chandigarh tomorrow. He has a two-day visit to Punjab. However, the party leadership is still silent on what steps Baghel will take to resolve the ongoing conflict in the state Congress. The central leadership has formed different committees for the assembly elections, in which Channi has been made the chairman of the election campaign committee.
However, the central leadership has retained state Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Wadding and Leader of Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa on their posts. The leaders of Channi faction were trying to change the leadership in the state Congress for the last few months and now they are not happy with the decision of the central leadership.
Channi will raise issues with Congress high command
In the meeting called by Charanjit Singh Channi on Friday (03 July), it was decided that Channi will raise with the high command whatever decisions the leaders of the Channi group have objections to. After the meeting, former minister and current MLA Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa said that Channi has been authorized in the meeting to raise his issues before the high command.
Raja Vading is not acceptable as president – Darshan Singh Brar
Former minister Sukhbinder Singh Sukh Sarkaria said, “The leaders gathered here have objections to some decisions of the central leadership and Channi will raise them before the leadership.” Former MLA Darshan Singh Brar clearly said that he does not accept Raja Vading as the president and if the party has to win the elections then Channi should be declared the chief ministerial face. It was claimed by the Channi faction that at least 75 leaders who had contested the 2022 assembly elections on Congress tickets were present in today’s meeting.
The high command will listen to the leaders of Channi group!
However, after several days of meetings with the leaders of Punjab, the party central leadership has decided to retain the election related committees and Amarinder Singh Raja Wadding and Pratap Singh Bajwa on their posts. In such a situation, it will be interesting to see to what extent the central leadership will accept the words of the leaders of Channi group.
