Real Estate News: The supply of houses in the real estate market of India may increase in the coming times. The reason for this could be not only builders but also NRIs i.e. Indians living abroad. According to a new report, a large number of NRIs are preparing to sell their properties purchased in India.
What came out in the report?
In fact, according to Remittor’s annual NRI Wealth Report 2026, about 46% of the NRI property owners surveyed want to sell their property immediately. At the same time, about 26% people are planning to sell it in the next 6 months. The special thing is that more than half of the NRIs want to send the money received after selling property abroad instead of reinvesting it in India.

NRIs are now selling properties purchased in 2010-19
According to this report, the trend of buying property among NRIs in India had increased significantly during 2010 to 2019. Now many properties purchased during that period are coming in the market for sale. More than 60% of the properties resold were purchased in this decade. About 89% of these are residential properties. This means that Indians living abroad are now looking at the houses bought in India not just for family or future living, but as an investment.
Property becomes a means of investment
Earlier, NRIs used to buy houses in India so that they could live here after retirement, have a home for their parents and family or have the option to return to India in the future. But now the thinking is changing. According to Shanu Nair, Founder and CEO of Remitter, due to rising home loan expenses abroad, children’s education, retirement planning, tax rules and the need to diversify investments, NRIs are thinking of selling their Indian properties and investing the money elsewhere.
What is the reason behind this?
According to the report, NRIs are not selling properties because India’s real estate market has deteriorated. Instead they want to manage their assets and investments in a new way. However, they are also facing problems in selling the property. About 81.4% sellers have not found a buyer yet. It is difficult for them to handle documents, negotiations and the entire sales process while living abroad.
