Coal Shortage: A post is becoming increasingly viral on social media, in which it is being claimed that India is facing severe power crisis and grid failure due to shortage of coal. Know what is being claimed?
In the viral post it has been said that the stock of coal is very less in many thermal plants of the country. Along with this, it has also been claimed that India’s power grid is in danger and there may be power cuts on a large scale.

What is the truth of the claim?
PIB Fact Check has termed these claims as completely misleading. According to the agency, this information is being shared to spread unnecessary panic.
What did PIB say?
- PIB clearly said that the country’s maximum electricity demand on May 2, 2026 was 229 GW, which was completely met.
- Apart from this, the country’s thermal power plants have adequate stock of 53.702 million tonnes of coal.
- PIB also said that the availability of electricity in the country is completely adequate.
- Also, grid operation and distribution is being done in a planned manner.
- Along with this, the existing frequency control system is sufficient for safe operation.
