One In Three TB Cases In Northeast India Are Asymptomatic: A scary picture has emerged from the most beautiful part of the country, North-East. A large screening campaign regarding TB in the North-East has raised concerns. Investigation found that among the people found infected with TB, a large number were such patients in whom no obvious symptoms of the disease were visible. That is, these people were normally busy in their daily routine and they themselves were not aware of this infection.
34 percent cases were found without symptoms
According to the Annual Report 2025-26 of the Health Ministry, under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme, special screening of people from vulnerable and at-risk sections was conducted in the North-Eastern states between January and October 2025. During this period, a total of 41,727 TB patients were identified, out of which 14,356 were patients who had no symptoms. This number is about 34 percent of the total cases.
39 lakh people were examined
Under the TB eradication campaign, about 39 lakh people were screened in eight states of the North-East. Of these, chest X-ray was also done for about 6 lakh people. Health experts believe that due to the active testing campaign, it was possible to identify such patients who would not have reached the hospital under normal circumstances. According to the data, maximum number of 10,362 asymptomatic TB patients were found in Assam. After this, 1,055 cases were registered in Meghalaya, 857 in Nagaland and 510 in Tripura. 479 such patients were found in Arunachal Pradesh, 465 in Manipur, 380 in Sikkim and 248 in Mizoram, in whom normal symptoms of TB were not present.

Big challenge for TB control campaign
Experts say that such patients prove to be a big challenge for the TB control campaign. Since they do not have symptoms of the disease, they can remain without treatment for a long time. Due to this there is also a risk of spread of infection. This is the reason why now instead of relying only on the patients coming to hospitals, the health department is running testing campaigns at door-to-door and community levels.
use of AI technology
Many states have also started resorting to modern technology for early detection of TB. Cough Against TB app and AI based portable X-ray unit are being used in Meghalaya. Apart from this, this type of facility is available in many states also. The most surprising thing is that according to the report, by September 2025, more than 10.7 lakh potential TB patients were screened in the North-Eastern region. During this period, a significant increase in the probable TB testing rate was also recorded. In the year 2024, this rate was 2,062 per lakh population, which will increase to 2,645 in 2025.
