How Sleep Apnea Increases Heart Disease Risk: We often consider sleep as a time of rest and recovery for the body. But there are millions of people around the world for whom sleep is not as restful as it should be. A common but overlooked problem is obstructive sleep apnea, which repeatedly interrupts the breathing process during sleep. What came out in the research?

Recently, a big study to be presented at the European Congress on Obesity 2026 has given serious indications regarding this problem. It was found that the risk of heart-related diseases or death could be up to 71 percent higher in people suffering from sleep apnea. This research was done by scientists from London’s Imperial College Health Partners and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, which also received support from Eli-Lilly and Company.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea occurs when the airway repeatedly blocks while sleeping, causing breathing to stop for some time. The body reacts immediately and the person wakes up slightly, so that breathing can resume. This process is repeated several times during the night, resulting in poor sleep quality and a drop in oxygen levels in the body. If this happens for a long time, the pressure on the heart and blood vessels increases. This can increase blood pressure, impair heart rhythm and increase swelling in the body. This is the reason why sleep apnea is linked to heart diseases.

What is the connection with obesity?

This problem is also closely related to obesity. About 40 to 70 percent of sleep apnea patients are overweight or obese. Fat accumulated around the neck narrows the airway, which increases obstruction in breathing. And sleep apnea itself makes it difficult to lose weight, creating a dangerous cycle. In this study, health records of about 29 lakh people were analyzed. In these, more than 20,000 sleep apnea patients were compared with about 1 lakh people who did not have this problem. These people were monitored for four years.

What was the result?

The results were quite worrying. About 26 percent of people with sleep apnea suffered serious conditions like heart attack, stroke or death, while this figure was about 17 percent among people without apnea. Not only heart disease, but diabetes, obesity, joint problems and mental health problems were also seen more in people associated with sleep apnea. Along with this, such people use healthcare services more.

However, there are treatments, such as a CPAP machine, which keeps the airway open while you sleep. But many people either remain unaware of this disease or are unable to get proper treatment, due to which the risk increases further.
