Flight Ticket Booking: If you book flight tickets online, then this news is very important for you. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a fine on the airline company SpiceJet. In fact, during investigation, it was found that the company was using a digital design like dark pattern on its website and mobile app during ticket booking, due to which some services were accepted without the permission of the passengers. According to the CCPA, such practices confuse consumers and link them to certain services and promotional messages without their knowledge. Let us know what is the whole matter.
What did the CCPA investigation reveal?
During the CCPA investigation, it was found that some options were already pre-ticked during ticket booking on SpiceJet’s website and mobile app. This is the reason why many customers unknowingly become a part of the SpiceClub loyalty program. Apart from this, consent to receive emails, WhatsApp and other promotional news was also automatically recorded.
Pure Petrol Rate: The rate of pure petrol will be Rs 168 per liter, Nitin Gadkari himself told amid the ethanol controversy.
Which dark patterns were found?
Adding customers to loyalty programs without explicit permission.
Pre-selection of certain options by default on the website.
Using words and interfaces that could easily confuse the customer.
Why was the company fined?
CCPA said that consent obtained through pre-ticked box or fraudulent design cannot be considered valid. This is a violation of the Consumer Protection Act 2019 and E-Commerce Rules 2020. Despite receiving the notice, the company only changed its method, but did not completely improve the process of taking promotional consent from customers. After this CCPA imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on SpiceJet.
