In today’s time, students select employment oriented courses which will help them get a good job quickly. In such a situation, students are losing confidence in some such courses. For this reason, there are many courses and subjects in which students are interested. Due to which educational institutions are closing the courses. Jamia Millia Islamia has taken a similar decision and has decided to close 5 courses.
According to Jamia, the 5 courses in which less than half the applications received compared to the prescribed seats, will not be conducted this year. These include Master of Hotel Management, PG Diploma in Translation Proficiency in English, PG Diploma in Disaster Management, Diploma in Leather Goods and Footwear Technology and MFA in Art Management. There were a total of 145 seats in all these courses and these were self-financed courses, that is, their expenses were borne by the fees of the students. The university has said that the fees of the students applying for these courses will be returned to their bank accounts.
According to media reports, the number of subjects in which the number of students has been less but the university is continuing them. They include BA (Hons) Sanskrit, MA Sanskrit, MA Persian, Diploma in Turkish and Diploma in Portuguese. There will be no admission test in these programs now. Students will be given direct admission on the basis of 12th or related qualifying marks.
That’s why the courses were started?
According to the report of Times of India, Jamia Millia Islamia’s Chief Public Relations Officer Saima Saeed said that some courses were started keeping in mind the interest and employment prospects of the students, but applications were not received as per expectations. The demand for diploma courses related to translation has also reduced, because now this field is changing rapidly due to AI and modern translation technology.

However, the university’s stance is different in the matter of Sanskrit. The administration believes that Sanskrit is an ancient and important language of India, hence it would not be right to close it only on the basis of less applications. It is expected that the number of students in these courses may increase in the next two-three years. With this in mind, it has been decided to continue both graduate and post graduate courses in Sanskrit.
It is noteworthy that Jamia started the Sanskrit department in the year 2017. First certificate courses were started and later regular courses at graduate and post graduate level were started. However, the university did not say whether there were less applications in these courses last year also or not. Whether these courses will continue in the next academic session or not will be decided on the basis of applications received at that time.
