Where was Surekha Yadav born?
Surekha Yadav was born in 1965 in a small village in Satara district of Maharashtra. His family was involved in farming and was not very strong financially, but his parents had big vision. He always inspired Surekha for studies. Surekha was hardworking since childhood. Along with helping in the household and farm work, she also pursued her studies with full dedication. Later he did Diploma in Electrical Engineering.
How did Surekha Yadav become the country’s first woman loco pilot?
After completing her studies, Surekha was looking for a job. Then he saw an advertisement of recruitment of Indian Railways in the newspaper. He applied for this job without thinking much. He did not know at that time that there were no women in this area. He just took it as an opportunity and passed the exam. In 1989, he got the job of assistant loco pilot.

How was the journey of the only woman loco pilot?
When Surekha reached for training, she saw that she was the only girl in the entire class. This was a shocking experience for her, but she did not give up and decided that she would not back down now. The initial years were very difficult for him. Along with learning the work, he also had to prove himself. In this job one has to be alert all the time because even a small mistake can lead to a big accident. Surekha gradually gained mastery in her work. In 1996 he was made a loco pilot. After this he ran many trains like goods train, express train and Mumbai local. She became the first woman in Asia to drive a train, later she also drove prestigious trains like Vande Bharat and Rajdhani Express. After serving in Railways for 36 years, Surekha Yadav retired in 2025. He drove the Rajdhani Express on the last day of his career.
How much salary did you get?
Initially the salary of Assistant Loco Pilot is less. Earlier it used to be around 25,000. As experience increases, salary also increases. An experienced loco pilot can get a salary of up to Rs 1 lakh or more, especially when he drives bigger and faster trains.
