Other airlines are also planning
Sources associated with the aviation industry told in a conversation with NDTV Profit that all other airlines are also considering reducing the fuel surcharge. A decision in this matter can be taken by the end of the second quarter or the beginning of the third quarter. However, airlines believe that although international jet fuel prices have decreased recently, they are still higher than the old average level. Therefore, companies want to see whether this fall in prices continues for a long time or not.

How will passengers benefit?
Air tickets can become cheaper due to reduced fuel surcharge, such that fuel surcharge is a part of the total price of the ticket. When the airline reduces it, passengers have to pay less for the ticket. In such a situation, people traveling abroad can get a lot of relief from this. However, reduction in fuel surcharge does not at all mean that tickets have become cheaper forever. Because the final price of the ticket is decided according to the base fare, airport charge, tax, user development fee (UDF) and other charges.

After 41 years, Canada finally accepted the truth which India has been saying for four decades regarding the bomb blast in Air India Flight 182 (Kanishka blast). On June 23, 1985, Air India Flight 182 was flying on the Montreal-London-New Delhi route when the plane fell into the Atlantic Ocean due to a bomb explosion at an altitude of about 9,400 meters in Irish airspace. A total of 329 people died in this accident.

Canada’s intelligence agency described the Kanishka bomb blast as a heinous act of terrorism and blamed Canada-based Khalistani terrorists for planting an explosive device in the plane. CSIS posted on Facebook, ‘On National Memorial Day for the Victims of Terrorism, CSIS remembers the 329 people aboard Air India Flight 182 who lost their lives in the heinous terrorist attack.’

Khalistani extremists had planted the bomb: Canada

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service said, ‘On June 23, 1985, a bomb planted by Khalistani extremists based in Canada exploded the plane, killing all people on board. Most of those killed were Canadians. It is the deadliest terrorist attack in Canadian history and marked a turning point for our national security community. At that time CSIS had been formed for less than a year. For the past four decades, we have been committed to protecting Canadians from politically, religiously and ideologically motivated violence.

India reiterates resolve to fight terrorism

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the Air India 182 ‘Kanishka’ bomb blast on Tuesday (23 June 2026) on the 41st anniversary of the incident and said that India reiterates its resolve to deal with all forms of terrorism. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the bombing as “the worst attack in Canadian history” and said his country stands against all forms of violent extremism.

Last Monday (22 June 2026) night, due to a technical fault in Air India flight AI-479 going from Delhi to Amritsar, the plane deviated from its planned path and went straight into Pakistan’s airspace. Pakistan Airports Authority has closed its airspace for all aircraft with Indian registration, whether commercial or military, from April 2025. This ban has been extended every month through NOTAM. This ban was in force on the night the AI-479 went astray and was extended till the morning of June 24. After this, with a new NOTAM issued on June 16, it has been further extended till July 24. This is the reason that as soon as the plane entered Lahore Flight Information Region of Pakistan, the Air Traffic Authority there immediately issued a warning.

Indian plane entered Pakistan border

Relations between India and Pakistan are already tense after the Pahalgam attack. In such a situation, the departure of an Indian aircraft in closed airspace makes the matter serious. However, Amritsar Airport sources say that the plane did not go more than one and a half miles inside the Pakistan border. The plane took off from Delhi at 9:18 pm on Monday night, which was just 3 minutes late from the scheduled time. Landing in Amritsar was to take place at 10.30 pm, but due to a technical glitch midway, the navigation of the plane got disturbed and it crossed the border.

The trouble did not end even after returning to Indian airspace. By then the traffic at Amritsar airport had increased due to which the plane was not allowed to land. Airport officials say that due to runway availability and traffic, it is a normal procedure to make the aircraft wait in the air, but in this case the real reason is said to be technical fault and deviation from the path. Air India airline has introduced its new basic fare formula today on 16 June 2026, which is specially designed for those passengers who want to fly domestically at low cost.

What is ‘Basic Fare’?

This is a new and cheapest fare class, which will be available in economy class on domestic routes of Air India. In this, the passenger will get 15 kg check-in baggage and 7 kg cabin baggage, but keep in mind that food and drink i.e. complimentary meal will not be included in this.

Food can be ordered even after purchasing the basic ticket, but booking will have to be done at least 24 hours before the flight. Veg, non-veg, Jain and diabetic meal options will be available. If the flight is changed and the meal was already booked then it will be transferred to the new flight or the full amount will be refunded.

Air India flight AI-171, going from Ahmedabad, Gujarat to London, fell on the ground as soon as it took off on June 12, 2025 last year. It has been a year since this accident, but the questions regarding the investigation are still not over. India’s pilot organization Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has now written a letter to the government investigation agency AAIB saying that some figures in the investigation report do not seem correct.

Actually, there is an emergency power device in the aircraft, which is called RAT. It is a small turbine, which comes out of the aircraft and provides emergency supply of electricity. It was said in the investigation report that the RAT started working within 4 to 5 seconds of fuel interruption, but when the team of American lawyers conducted the same test on the simulator of Boeing-787, it found that in reality it takes about 18 seconds to work.

Why is this difference important?

FIP says that if the timing of the report is correct, it means that the RAT had come out even before the pilot had touched any switch. Simply put, something went wrong with the plane while it was hitting the runway or even before that. FIP also said that the plane’s computer systems were sending malfunction messages from 7:53 a.m., about 14 minutes before takeoff. These messages related to power system, hydraulics and flight controls are called ACARS. The surviving passenger also said that he had heard a loud noise and the cabin lights had dimmed.

What did FIP demand?

The pilot organization wants AAIB itself to conduct tests on the Boeing-787 simulator and a representative of FIP should also be present there. Also, the complete video of the security camera of Ahmedabad Airport should be given to FIP. Apart from this, it should also be investigated that even though Air India itself had the simulator, why did it not give this information to AAIB?

This letter has also been sent to the Civil Aviation Minister, Prime Minister’s Office and DGCA. However, no official response has yet come from AAIB and Air India on this.

Effect of expensive ATF
Just as the prices of petrol and diesel are increasing across the country, similarly the prices of jet fuel i.e. ATF are also increasing. Due to which the flights have been reduced. Due to increase in fuel prices, flight fares have also been increased. This is also a big reason due to which passengers are avoiding traveling by flight. When the number of passengers is less, then the airlines also have less cost for maintenance, in such a situation there is no option left except canceling the flights.

Let us tell you that according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), between February and June, ATF prices have seen an increase of more than 52% globally. After which it became $146.25 per barrel.

Air India: The country’s two largest airlines – IndiGo and Air India are going to cancel about 250 of their domestic flights daily from June. Due to this, the price of jet fuel (ATF) has increased from Rs 80000 per kilometer to Rs 1 lakh per kilometer in many cities of India. Due to this, fuel has become costlier by about 25% for domestic flights and by almost 100% for international routes.

Which airlines are reducing flights by how much?

• Air India is cutting its domestic flights by about 22% during June and July. The airline operates around 500 domestic flights daily, and this cut would mean around 110 fewer flights per day and around 800 less per week.

  Similarly, Indigo is also going to cut its domestic flights by 5-7% and international flights by 17%. Including these two, approximately 250 flights will be canceled daily between June and August.
