Strong earthquake tremors were felt in Assam in the early hours of Monday (January 5, 2026). According to the National Center for Seismology, the epicenter of the earthquake was in Morigaon district of Assam. Its intensity has been measured at 5.1 on the Richter scale. Apart from Assam, strong earthquake tremors were felt in many states located in the North-East, due to which people got scared and came out of their homes. This earthquake occurred at around 4:17 in the morning, when most of the people were in deep sleep.

Apart from Assam, the impact of earthquake was also seen in Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and other areas of North-East India. The epicenter of the earthquake was about 50 kilometers below the ground, due to which the tremors were felt far and wide. Light tremors were felt in some areas and strong tremors were felt in some places.

Good news for now, no damage

The good thing is that till now there has been no news of any injury or major damage due to this earthquake. Administration and disaster management departments are keeping an eye on the situation. Information is being continuously collected from sensitive areas so that any emergency situation can be dealt with.

Appeal to be cautious

The administration has appealed to the people not to pay attention to rumors and remain alert. Experts say that people living in earthquake prone areas should always be careful and follow safety instructions.

Assam in earthquake-sensitive areas

The history of Assam has been associated with horrific incidents of earthquake. This area is counted among the most earthquake-sensitive areas of the country. The biggest reason for this is the collision of the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. Due to this collision, there are repeated movements under the ground and strong tremors are felt.

Shillong earthquake of 1897, which shook everything

The Shillong earthquake that occurred on 12 June 1897 proved to be a terrible disaster for Assam and the entire North-East India. The intensity of this earthquake was measured more than 8. Thousands of people were affected by it and a large number of houses, roads and buildings collapsed. The impact of this earthquake was so widespread that traces of devastation were visible in cities as far away as Calcutta.

India’s Fastest Growing State: The developed states of India include states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. However, meanwhile, a fresh revelation has come in the report of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It has been told that in the last five years, the economy of Assam has grown much faster than other states. Its contribution in taking the country forward is highest in the North-Eastern states.

RBI data on Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) at constant prices has shown that Assam’s economy has grown by 45 percent between 2020 and 2025, which is more than other states. What’s more, this is more than the economic growth of the country in these five years.

Assam moved ahead leaving everyone behind

Assam’s GSDP increased from Rs 2.4 lakh crore in 2020 to Rs 3.5 lakh crore in 2025. This can be attributed to the rapid increase in investment in agriculture, oil and gas and infrastructure across the Northeast. This growth of Assam shows a big change in taking the country forward, which shows that now the economic expansion is not limited to a few areas, but its scope has now spread to many other states also.
Talking at the national level, India’s GDP has increased from Rs 145.35 lakh crore in 2020 to Rs 187.97 lakh crore in 2025, which shows an increase of 29 percent in five years. Based on this, RBI data shows that the top 10 fastest growing state economies have achieved growth of up to 45 percent, which is much higher than the national average.

What is the economic growth of other states?

In these five years, Uttar Pradesh achieved growth of up to 35 percent. Its GSDP increased from Rs 11.7 lakh crore to Rs 15.8 lakh crore. After this, Rajasthan registered a growth of 34 percent. Its economy increased from Rs 6.8 lakh crore to Rs 9.1 lakh crore.

Both Bihar and Andhra Pradesh registered a growth of 33 percent. Of these, the GSDP of Bihar increased from Rs 4.0 lakh crore to Rs 5.3 lakh crore, while that of Andhra Pradesh increased from Rs 6.5 lakh crore to Rs 8.7 lakh crore.

Both Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand registered a growth of 31 percent. During this period, the economy of Chhattisgarh increased from Rs 2.5 lakh crore to Rs 3.3 lakh crore, while the GSDP of Jharkhand increased from Rs 2.3 lakh crore to Rs 3.0 lakh crore. At the same time, Telangana also made it to the top ten with a growth of 30 percent. Its GSDP increased from Rs 6.4 lakh crore to Rs 8.4 lakh crore.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed on Tuesday (December 23) that if the population of people from neighboring country Bangladesh increases by 10 percent in Assam, then his state can automatically join Bangladesh. Speaking to reporters after an official program in Guwahati, Sarma said that he has been raising concerns about uncontrolled migration for the last five years.

The Chief Minister of Assam said that 40 percent of the population in his state is of Bangladeshi origin. If it increases by another 10 percent, we will automatically join it. He made this statement in response to the alleged comment of a Bangladesh leader regarding merging the North-East with Dhaka.

Controversial statement of Bangladesh leader
Earlier this month, Bangladesh’s newly formed National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdullah had reportedly said that Dhaka should isolate India’s northeastern states and support separatist elements if New Delhi attempts to destabilize Bangladesh. Abdullah claimed that the northeastern region is geographically insecure as it depends on the narrow Siliguri Corridor, also known as Chicken Neck, for connectivity with mainland India.

Himanta Biswa Sarma’s concern about Muslim population
Himanta Biswa Sarma had recently reiterated his previous warnings about migrants, claiming that other communities in Assam would not be able to survive if the Muslim population exceeds 50 percent. Speaking at an event, he had said that the native population of Assam is facing an existential crisis due to uncontrolled migration for decades.

According to Sarma’s estimates, Assam’s Muslim population was estimated to be around 38 percent in 2021. Due to continuous 4-5 percent decadal growth rate since 1961, it may increase up to 40 percent by 2027. He argued that identity politics in Assam has become not an option but a compulsion for survival.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma clearly said that voting in the state does not depend only on government schemes or financial assistance. According to him, there are many communities in Assam whose political preferences do not change due to money or facilities.

When he was asked in a private TV channel program whether he could bring a scheme to provide cash assistance to women like in Bihar, he rejected the idea. Sarma said that some communities of Assam appreciate his work but do not come to his side at the time of voting. He said that voting trends in the state are influenced by ideology rather than government schemes or financial incentives. No matter how much money is given, be it Rs 10,000 or Rs 1 lakh, no Muslim voter will choose him as their candidate.

Votes are decided not by plans, but by ideas

The Chief Minister’s argument was that in any democracy, voters do not vote only after seeing benefits. He said that it is the responsibility of the government to run the schemes, but it is not right to assume that every citizen who gets benefits will vote for the same government. According to Sarma, many sections in Assam vote on the basis of their ideological thinking, identity and political beliefs.

Concern over demographic change in Assam

During the discussion, Sarma also expressed concern about the rapidly changing population in the state. He said that the illegal migration that has continued over the years has affected the demographic balance. Sarma said that the Muslim population of Assam was about 38% in 2021. Since 1961, a continuous growth of 4–5% has been recorded every decade. By 2027 this ratio may reach 40%. The Chief Minister says that if this percentage crosses 50% then the identity and cultural heritage of other communities of the state may come under pressure.

Relationships are good but votes are not available

Sarma said that he has a good personal relationship with the women of Miya community and many Muslim families, but at the time of elections this practical connection does not translate into votes. He also said that even if Muslim votes go with Congress, BJP is still able to maintain its political position in Assam. In the end, the Chief Minister said that only those people in Assam can be called their own, who connect themselves with Assamese and Indian identity.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday (2 December 2025) announced a major relief for the families. He said that cooking gas priced at Rs 300 per cylinder will soon become a reality for lakhs of families in the state. In this initiative started with the aim of reducing the financial burden on low-income families, beneficiaries under Orunodoi Scheme and Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana will be given a subsidy of Rs 250 on LPG cylinder.

In a post on social media platform

How will you get the benefit of this scheme?

Official sources said the subsidy will be given directly to the beneficiaries, which will add to the existing assistance from the central government under the PMUY. The move is expected to benefit a large section of economically weaker families, especially women, who top both the Orunodoi and PMUY beneficiary lists.

What is the purpose of bringing this scheme?

Orunodoi Scheme, one of the special welfare programs of Assam, currently provides financial assistance every month to eligible families to meet essential expenses. By including LPG subsidy in the scheme, the state government hopes to further reduce rising household expenses, especially as gas prices remain a concern for low-income groups.

When is this scheme going to be implemented

This announcement is likely to provide relief to working people in rural and urban areas, who are dependent on subsidized cylinders for their daily cooking needs. Although the government has not yet announced the date of rollout, officials have said that methods are being finalized for its smooth implementation. It is expected that LPG distributors will be well informed about the subsidy system and the Social Welfare Department and Food and Civil Supplies Department will coordinate among themselves in identification of beneficiaries and distribution of subsidy. With this initiative, Assam has also joined those states which are trying to protect people from changes in gas prices by increasing LPG subsidy at the local level. This will further strengthen the government’s goal of ‘development for all’ and providing genuine benefits to the needy.

All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam was detained under the National Security Act. After more than 6 months in custody, the Gauhati High Court has canceled his detention order and directed that he be released if he is not wanted in any other case.

Islam, MLA from Dhing constituency of Assam, was arrested for his statement given at a rally on April 24, in which he had said that the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 was a conspiracy by the BJP government at the Centre. On May 14, he got bail in this case, but on the same day he was detained under the National Security Act (NSA).

What did the Justice of Gauhati High Court say?
A bench of Justices Kalyan Rai Surana and Rajesh Majumdar of the Gauhati High Court on Friday (November 28) said the order of Islam’s detention under the NSA was illegal as the authorities had unexplained delay in acting on the application against his detention and also did not inform him about his right to present his case before the Center until the Center reminded the state of it.

What argument did the lawyer of Islam give?
A lawyer from Islam’s lawyer Shantanu Borthakur’s team said the MLA is expected to be released later on Friday. Islam was arrested on April 24 on charges including BNS Section 152, which deals with acts threatening the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India, and a similar charge of sedition under the IPC.

His detention under the NSA after he was granted bail on May 14 was based on an order of the Nagaon DC, which cited a report by the Superintendent of Police that Islam continued to indulge in activities prejudicial to public order and the security of the state and upon his speech the report said he was satisfied that Islam may continue to indulge in activities prejudicial to the security of the state.
