Continuous torrential rains in Arunachal Pradesh and Upper Assam have created a dire flood situation in Dhemaji and Jonai. The swollen rivers have completely disrupted life. Many villages have been submerged, road and rail links have been badly affected, while thousands of people have been affected by the floods. The biggest impact of the flood has been on the railway bridge built on the Simen river in Dhemaji district. Due to rapid erosion of the river and rising water level, a part of the bridge was damaged, after which the operation of trains on this railway line was suspended in view of safety. Due to this, the rail services of the area have been completely affected.

Contact with many villages lost due to washing away of 300 meter long iron bridge

At the same time, about 300 meter long iron bridge built on Kemi river in Jonai area was washed away in the strong current. This bridge was the main connectivity route connecting Kemi-Old Jelom area with Jonai Sadar. Road connectivity of many villages has been completely broken due to the washing away of the bridge, due to which relief and rescue operations are facing difficulties.

A painful accident also came to light amid the flood. Four people were washed away in the strong current of the river, out of which three were rescued safely with the help of local people and rescue team. However, one person is still missing. Despite bad weather and strong current, the search continues.

According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), about 16 thousand people in 69 villages of four revenue circles of Dhemaji district have been affected by the floods. Hundreds of families have been evacuated to safe places and relief camps, while a large number of agricultural lands have been submerged.

In view of the serious flood situation, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on separate phones and took information about the situation arising out of flash flood and incessant rains.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that he gave detailed information to the Home Minister about the ongoing relief and rehabilitation works in the state. He said that Amit Shah has assured all possible help and cooperation from the Central Government, so that relief can be provided to the affected people soon. The Chief Minister also expressed his gratitude to the Home Minister for expressing concern over the flood situation in Dhemaji and assuring him of assistance.

Severe flood situation in 12 districts of Arunachal

Meanwhile, torrential rains continued in Arunachal Pradesh on Monday (June 29, 2026), causing severe flood situation in about 12 districts of the state. Many roads have been damaged, public infrastructure has been heavily damaged and many people have also lost their lives. The rising water coming from Arunachal has made the flood situation more serious in the low-lying areas of Assam, especially Dhemaji and Jonai.

Meteorological Department issued alert of heavy rain

Teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire and emergency services and district administration are engaged in relief and rescue operations on war footing. Stranded people are being transported to safe places through boats and food, drinking water, medicines and other essential materials are being provided.

The weather department has predicted more heavy rain in the coming days. In such a situation, the administration has appealed to the people to be cautious, stay away from rivers and streams and travel only when absolutely necessary. At present, the priority of the administration is to speed up relief and rescue operations, search for missing people and provide all possible assistance to the affected people.

Assam Assembly Passes UCC Bill: The Assam Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill on Wednesday. With this, Assam has become the third state in the country and the first in the North-East after Uttarakhand and Gujarat to move towards implementing UCC at the state level.

The objective of this law is to make personal laws related to marriage, divorce, inheritance and live-in relationships uniform for all communities. However, Scheduled Tribes have been kept out of its scope.

Key provisions of the bill include a complete ban on polygamy, mandatory registration of marriages and divorces, and making registration of live-in relationships mandatory. Apart from this, a provision has been made to give equal rights in property to daughters and to fix the minimum age of marriage at 21 years for men and 18 years for women.

“Congress had raised the demand for UCC in 1925”: Himanta attacks opposition in Assam Assembly

During the discussion on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the Assam Assembly, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a scathing attack on the Congress. He claimed that Congress was the first to raise the demand for UCC in 1925 and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru also supported it in 1937.

Sarma alleged that Congress is no longer a secular party and is only representing “a particular community”. He said that Congress is opposing UCC not on the basis of the Constitution or tribal traditions, but from the perspective of “Quran and Shariat”.

“Attempt to impose Hindu law on Muslims”: Owaisi’s attack on UCC bill

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has launched a scathing attack on the state government over the UCC bill passed in the Assam Assembly. Owaisi alleged that this was an attempt to “impose Hindu law through the back door” on Muslims.

He said that Hindu principles are being applied in matters like inheritance, property division and divorce, while it is being described as “common law”. Owaisi wrote on the social media platform ‘X’ that only Hindu culture is being protected, while Muslims are being forced to follow these rules.

The Assam government has introduced the Uniform Civil Code Bill (UCC Bill 2026) in the Assembly. This bill states that it will not apply to any Scheduled Tribe (ST) residing in Assam. AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi has targeted the BJP government regarding this. He said that UCC is not uniform and it is against tribal communities.

Assam UCC is not the same: Owaisi

Asaduddin Owaisi posted on X and said, ‘The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) of Assam is not uniform at all. This keeps tribal communities completely out of the scope of UCC. Under Article 29, every community has the right to protect its culture, but why is only the autonomy of tribals being protected? This is a law being imposed that no one wants. The Constituent Assembly did not envision any mandatory UCC.

Law is far away from gender justice: Owaisi

AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi wrote, ‘No one can deprive any heir of inheritance in Islam. No one can write such a will that his entire property is given to only one son or the daughter is deprived of inheritance. This UCC allows anyone to write a will and deprive his daughters of their fair share. This law is far away from gender justice.

What are the provisions in Assam UCC Bill?

The bill proposes a single civil legal framework governing marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships for all residents of the state, while excluding Scheduled Tribes from it to protect their constitutional safeguards. The proposed law aims to replace religion-based laws with a uniform code that aims to ensure gender justice, equality and legal uniformity across all communities.

Under this bill, monogamy has been made mandatory, while the legal age of marriage has been fixed at 21 years for men and 18 years for women. The law also maintains cultural and religious diversity by allowing marriages to be performed according to existing customs and ceremonies. These include Vedic marriage, Ahom Chaklong, Saptapadi, Nikah, sacred union and Anand Karaj. This bill makes registration of marriages and divorces mandatory throughout the state.

However, Tariq Sarkar has rejected all these allegations. Within a few days of BJP coming to power in West Bengal, political parties of Bangladesh are accusing Muslims of atrocities in India, especially in the border states like Bengal and Assam. However, the Tariq government of Bangladesh has rejected these claims outright and said that there is no evidence for such allegations.

According to a report in The Times of India (May 14), Dhaka has said that it has not received any official report of any kind of harassment or atrocities against Muslims in India. The Bangladesh government rejected the allegations made by the country’s largest Islamic political party, Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI) and its allies. These groups had claimed that after BJP’s victory in Assam and West Bengal, Muslims are facing persecution in India.

Dhaka officials said there was no evidence to corroborate the allegations. Bangladeshi officials have also said that they have not received any reports about such incidents through diplomatic or official channels.

What did the Home Minister of Bangladesh say?
Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed directly raised questions on the basis of the claims. He said on Tuesday, “What evidence or data do you have that such tortures have started against Muslims? Many old incidents are being circulated on social media. Our diplomatic mission is there. Our Foreign Ministry is there. You can ask them. We have not received any report of any such incident of torture.”

What allegations did Jamaat-e-Islami make?
The minister’s comments came when some sections of the media sought a response from the government on Jamaat-e-Islami’s demand to summon the Indian ambassador from Bangladesh over alleged atrocities on Muslims in India. The opposition Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies alleged that Muslims across the border were facing continuous harassment. He also claimed that anti-Bangladesh forces will continue to spread incitement, communalism and propaganda.

What did Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis say?
Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis (BKM) also said similar things. BKM on Sunday accused Muslims of repression in Assam and West Bengal and demanded summoning of the Indian ambassador from Dhaka. Speaking to TOI, senior BKM leader Anwar Hossain Razi criticized the Bangladesh government’s inaction, saying, “We call upon the media to bring out the truth of what is happening in India as the government is maintaining silence. It is time for the media to play an effective role.”

Singapore’s High Commissioner to India Simon Wong, in a post on social media platform X, wished Sarma and reiterated Singapore’s commitment to support the development of Assam. Describing Singapore as a trusted friend of Assam, Wong said the island nation is ready to further strengthen cooperation with the north-eastern state in many areas.

The High Commissioner said in a post on Twitter, ‘Many congratulations to our dear friend Himanta Biswa Sarma. Your new tenure as Chief Minister will definitely take Assam to new heights. As your trusted friend, we will stand with Assam as always.

Sarma took oath as Chief Minister

The BJP-led NDA won a significant victory in the Assam assembly elections. This cleared the way for Sarma to continue as Chief Minister for another term. Sarma took oath as Chief Minister in the presence of several senior BJP and NDA leaders in Guwahati on Monday (May 12).

‘I take oath…’, Himanta Biswa Sarma became the Chief Minister of Assam for the second time, know who became the minister

Assam-Singapore increased cooperation in many areas

In the last few years, Assam and Singapore have significantly increased cooperation in areas like industrial investment, technology, infrastructure and skill development. Singapore has emerged as one of the state’s key international partners under India’s Act East Policy. Starting in 2026, Assam-Singapore relations have increasingly focused on economic partnership, green energy initiatives, semiconductor manufacturing and urban planning cooperation. Many of these initiatives have been included in the state’s Advantage Assam 2.0 programme, which aims to attract global investment and promote industrial development in the region.

The Assam government is also involving Singapore companies for the development of semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in the Electronic City Project of Jagiroad. In January 2026, Sarma also met Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam during the World Economic Forum to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between Assam and Singapore. An MoU for industrial and investment cooperation was also signed. Its objective is to increase employment opportunities for skilled workers in Singapore.

As the election atmosphere heats up, illegal betting markets also become active in many parts of the country. This is an informal betting system, where people place money on the victory or defeat of political parties and candidates. The country is waiting for the election results of 5 states.

In Assam and West Bengal, most of the exit polls seem to be giving victory to BJP, while on the other hand, in Tamil Nadu, all eyes are on TVK, but what does the betting market say? On which party is the betting market placing its bets? The betting market of Mumbai is completely hot before the results of the assembly elections of five states. The latest sentiments and estimates are giving such signals which can shake the political equations.

Signs of crisis in Mamta didi’s chair

West Bengal is considered to be the biggest contest, where the total seats are 294 and the majority figure is 148. In such a situation, it is being estimated that BJP may get 175-185 seats, this is not only much more than the majority, but BJP seems to be creating history in Bengal. On the other hand, Mamata led TMC seems to be shrinking to 127-132 seats. Others (Congress, CPIM, ISF) seem to be in single digits. This time in Mumbai’s betting market, more trust is being expressed on West Bengal opposition leader and BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari than Mamata Banerjee.

DMK’s strong comeback this time
According to the estimates of Mumbai betting market, DMK seems to be making a strong comeback this time in Tamil Nadu. There are a total of 234 assembly seats in the state. In such a situation, DMK is likely to get 145-155 seats and AIADMK seems to be shrinking to 45-65 seats. Whereas actor Vijay’s party TVK is likely to win 7-9 seats. According to the trend, MK Stalin is leading, while the graph of AIADMK seems to be falling.

BJP’s dominance in Assam
BJP’s dominance seems to be intact in Assam. Out of total 126 seats, BJP is seen winning 85-92 seats and Congress only 34-38 seats. There is a close contest in Puducherry. According to estimates, out of total 30 seats, NDA is seen winning 15-18 seats and India Block 14-17 seats.

Preparations for counting of votes completed in Jorhat: Counting of votes will take place on May 4, tight security arrangements

As the time for the results of Assembly elections 2026 in Assam approaches, the Jorhat district administration has completed all preparations for the counting of votes. District Deputy Commissioner (DC) Jai Shivani said that the counting of votes will start at 8:00 am on Monday (May 4, 2026). He assured that all necessary steps have been taken to conduct the counting process in a fair, peaceful and transparent manner.

He said that voting was completed peacefully in four assembly constituencies under Jorhat electoral district, namely 99-Teok, 100-Jorhat, 101-Mariani and 102-Titabor, earlier this month on April 9.

Two counting centers created for vote counting

DC Jai Shivani said that two centers have been earmarked for vote counting to be held on Monday (May 4, 2026). The first one is Jorhat Girls HS and MP School, where the votes cast at the polling booths of 99-Teok assembly constituency will be counted. While the second counting center is Jorhat Boys HS and MP School, where counting of votes will be done for 100-Jorhat, 101-Mariani and 102-Titabor assembly constituencies.

Deputy Commissioner Jai Shivani said that all necessary arrangements have been ensured at all the designated centers for counting of votes. In this

He said that after completion of each round of counting of votes, the results will be announced and made available to the media room.

What arrangements have been made from security point of view?

He further said that a three-tier security system has been implemented to conduct the counting of votes in a safe and orderly manner.

First circle (100 meter perimeter): Guarded by District Police, this area will be declared pedestrian zone and no unauthorized vehicles will be allowed.

Second cordon (entrance): Guarded by State Armed Police, where intensive searches will be conducted. Taking mobile, laptop, camera, matchbox, weapons and other prohibited items inside will be completely prohibited.

Third circle (counting hall): Guarded by Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), where additional checking will be done. During this period, only people having authorized identity card or pass will be allowed to enter.

What is a restraining order??

District Deputy Commissioner Jai Shivani said that on the day of counting of votes, Section 163 of BNSS 2023 will be applicable within 100 meters of the center from 6 am. In this, any kind of crowd or activity without permission will be prohibited. There will be a ban on photography and videography inside the vote counting hall, although authorized media personnel will be allowed to carry handheld cameras.

Transparency and monitoring

He said that 100 percent CCTV surveillance and videography of the entire vote counting process will be done. Only authorized counting agents will get entry. Every table will be monitored by micro-observers and observers appointed by the Election Commission. After counting of EVMs, matching of VVPAT slips will be done compulsorily.

For the media, a special media center has been set up inside the second security cordon, where there will be facilities of LED screen, internet and public address system. Apart from this, if we talk about other arrangements, medical team and ambulance have been arranged, fire brigade will be deployed and backup arrangements have also been made for electricity through DG set.
