Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has made a big announcement saying that she and other exiled Awami League leaders are planning to voluntarily return to Bangladesh around December this year. She said that she knows that she may be arrested or even killed as soon as she returns, but despite this she will go back to her country and surrender before the court.

‘Can arrest, even kill, but I will still return’
78-year-old Sheikh Hasina told news agency Reuters that she was fully aware of the risks of her return. He said, ‘They can arrest me as soon as I return, they can even kill me. Still I have to go back. Hasina said that the leaders and workers of her party Awami League are being continuously repressed. He said emotionally that even if he dies, it should be on the soil of his own country, where his parents are buried and where his blood was shed.

Sheikh Hasina is living in India
Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh and came to India after being ousted from power following the student movement in August 2024. She has been living in exile since her government fell following widespread student-led protests. He also clarified that there has been no discussion of any kind with the current government or officials of Dhaka regarding his return to Bangladesh.

Sentenced to death for crime against humanity
This statement of Sheikh Hasina has come at a time when, just a few months ago, the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh had convicted her of crimes against humanity and sentenced her to death. The court had admitted that Sheikh Hasina had a role in the crackdown on protesters during the 2024 student movement. The verdict said she either ordered the killing of protesters or failed to stop them.

Action also taken against former home minister and former police chief
In the same case, the court has also sentenced former Home Minister of Bangladesh Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death. At the same time, former Inspector General of Police Chaudhry Abdullah Al-Mamun has been sentenced to five years in jail. The court has also ordered to confiscate the properties of Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. Now Sheikh Hasina’s announcement of possible return to Bangladesh in December has once again intensified the stir in the country’s politics.

Bangladesh’s Jamaat-e-Islami and the alliance of Islamic and other opposition parties led by it have announced protests on the India-Bangladesh border. Earlier, the National Citizen Party (NCP), led by anti-Sheikh Hasina student leaders, has also been included in this alliance. The alliance says that it will hold this demonstration in protest against the alleged harassment of Bangladeshi citizens by India and the alleged killings near the border.

The Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance of 11 parties has announced that protest rallies will be organized on June 12 in the border districts and important border points of Bangladesh. After this, a big meeting and procession will be taken out in the capital Dhaka on June 15. The alliance has also criticized the Bangladesh government and alleged that India is trying to forcibly send people across the border.

Bangladeshi civilians killed in BSF firing

The alliance also alleged that Bangladeshi civilians were killed in firing by India’s Border Security Force (BSF). It has also been announced to march to Indian border posts on this issue. This decision has come at a time when the issue of alleged push-in in Bangladesh, i.e. forcibly sending people across the border, remains a topic of discussion. According to reports, Dhaka had also raised this issue before the recent Director General level meeting held in New Delhi between the border security forces of India and Bangladesh. Although India has denied these allegations. India says that it is not doing any kind of push-in and only illegal foreign nationals are being sent back as per the due legal process and arrangements made between the two countries. India says that such people are sent back only after complete identity verification.

Criticism of Home Minister of Bangladesh Government

After the proposed demonstration by the Islamic parties of Bangladesh, this issue is no longer limited to government talks only but seems to be taking the form of public protest. Jamaat-e-Islami said in its statement that protest rallies will be organized in the border districts on June 12 and a big protest march will be taken out in Dhaka on June 15. This statement has the signature of former MP AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad. Even before this, he had criticized the Home Minister of Bangladesh Government on border related issues and said that the government was adopting a more soft attitude towards India.

Islamic ideology organizations in Bangladesh

This alliance of 11 parties was formed before the general elections of Bangladesh on 12 February. It is led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and includes many organizations with Islamic ideology. These include Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis, Khilafat Majlis, Bangladesh Khilafat Movement and Nizam-e-Islam Party and many other parties. The protests on the Indian border were announced at a press conference held at the central office of Jamaat-e-Islami in Dhaka on Wednesday. Alliance coordinator and Jamaat-e-Islami assistant general secretary AHM Hamidur Rehman Azad said that rallies will be held in all important border areas on Friday, June 12, followed by a big demonstration in the capital on June 15.

How many illegal immigrants have been sent to Bangladesh so far?

The West Bengal government has said that about 4,800 illegal immigrants have been sent to Bangladesh from the holding centers in the border areas, while the process of returning 836 others is underway. There is approximately 4,096 km long border between India and Bangladesh, which is considered to be the longest international border of India with any country. At present, talks are going on between the two countries on this issue at diplomatic and border management level, while the Jamaat-e-Islami led alliance is preparing to take it forward as a public movement.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) had a landslide victory in the general elections held in February this year. Four minority candidates also won in these elections, after which two were made ministers in the Tariq Rehman government. Nitai Roy Chowdhury, who is a Hindu. Second Deepen Diwan Chakma, who is a follower of Buddhism. Nearly three months after the formation of the government, Dipen Dewan Chakma has resigned from the post of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Minister. He has resigned from the post citing his physical problems.

Deepen’s supporters claim that he resigned after just three months in office due to pressure and not due to health reasons. According to Bangladeshi media The Daily Star, in his resignation letter to Prime Minister Tariq Rahman, Dipen said that he was facing many health-related problems, due to which he was facing difficulties in doing his work. In his resignation letter, Dipen wrote that it was necessary to step down from the post to help the government develop and maintain the pace of government work.

Resigned from job in 2005

The letter said, due to my physical illness, I am facing many difficulties in fulfilling the responsibilities assigned to me. About three and a half months ago, Deepen Diwan had assumed the responsibility of this post. Diwan was earlier a senior joint district judge and had resigned from government service in 2005. After this he joined Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Also read- Iran canceled peace talks with US, Pakistan’s entire planning came to a standstill! New update regarding Hormuz

Diwan’s father was Ziaur Rahman’s advisor

According to Bangladeshi media, his father Subimal Dewan was an advisor to BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman. Subimal was also the founding general secretary of Rangamati district BNP. In 2010, Dewan was elected President of BNP in Rangamati. In 2016, he was made the Central Assistant Religious Affairs Secretary of the party. However, Diwan is still handling the responsibility of this post. He contested the elections for the first time on 12 February, in which he defeated UPDF-backed independent candidate Pahal Chakma by 169,066 votes. On 17 February, after the BNP won the elections by a landslide and formed the government under the leadership of Tariq Rahman, Dewan was given the responsibility of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs.

Debate in Bangladesh on Diwan’s resignation

According to Bangladeshi media Prothom Alo, leaders and workers involved in BNP politics, as well as people from the Pahari community, are trying to understand why Dipen Dewan took such a decision. Discussion has started regarding the real reason behind Deepen’s resignation. His supporters blocked the road in Rangamati and demanded withdrawal of his resignation and reinstatement. The protesters claim that Deepen Dewan was forced to resign due to pressure. Local BNP leaders said that they were not aware of Deepen Diwan’s resignation. They believe that he may have resigned because of issues related to running the ministry, controlling Rangamati politics and the process of making government appointments to the District Council in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The activities of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs are focused on three hill districts. There are three parliamentary seats there. In the national elections, BNP candidates won all three seats – Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban.

Bangladesh Tourism: There are speculations that relations with India will improve after BNP leader Tariq Rehman becomes the new Prime Minister. Relations between the two countries have remained sour for some time. There is an atmosphere of political turmoil in Bangladesh since August 2024.

Tourists are keeping distance from Bangladesh

First the student movement, then the demand for Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, protests against her, the interim government coming to power, continuous violent attacks on minorities – these incidents are continuously in the headlines. The effect of all this is that the number of foreign tourists in Bangladesh has decreased.

Last year i.e. in 2025, the number of foreign tourists here has declined by more than 9 percent. In particular, there has been a huge decline of 73 percent in the number of tourists coming from India. Keeping in mind the atmosphere of instability in Bangladesh, the Indian government has imposed restrictions regarding visas, which has affected tourism.

In the 2024 ‘Travel and Tourism Development Index’ of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Bangladesh is ranked 109th out of 119 countries, which is the lowest in the Asia-Pacific region. This figure is important for Bangladesh because the contribution of tourism in Bangladesh’s GDP is about 3.02 percent.

Loss despite government’s efforts

In Bangladesh, the government has divided tourism into 12 sub-sectors to strengthen tourism and increase employment. That is, the government has divided tourism not only into hotels but also into many different sectors like cafes, resorts, cruise ships, airlines, travel agencies, museums, handicrafts, so that everyone from drivers to cooks and artisans can get employment.

After the loss in tourism in the year 2024, there has been a huge decline in Bangladesh’s foreign income. In 2024, Bangladesh has suffered a loss of 13 million dollars i.e. more than Rs 100 crore in foreign earnings.

Which countries did Indian tourists visit?

On the other hand, the number of Indians going abroad in 2025 increased by 6.6 percent to a record 3.3 crore. However, the number of people going to Saudi Arabia and America has decreased. Last year, the number of Indians going to Canada also decreased by about 16 percent to 8 lakhs.

According to the report, a travel agent said, “Despite reasonable domestic airfares in the non-peak season, due to expensive hotels, the Indian middle class is now finding it cheaper to go to places like UAE, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia instead of Goa or Kerala.”

Bogura-6 constituency: Bogura-6 (Sadar) parliamentary seat has been vacated by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) President and Prime Minister Tariq Rahman. He won the elections from two seats. He gave up a seat a day before taking oath. Now by-election will be held on this vacant seat. The discussion has intensified in the party regarding who will be the candidate this time.

From 1991 to 2008, BNP candidates kept winning the Bogura-6 seat by a huge margin in every general election. In the elections of 1996, 2001 and 2008, late party president Khaleda Zia had registered a landslide victory on the ‘Paddy Hair’ election symbol. In the 13th parliamentary elections held on 12 February, BNP President Tariq Rehman won a big victory from the same seat.

Election Commission has not announced the date yet

The Election Commission has not yet announced the date of the by-election. But the discussion is going on in the party as to who will be made the candidate. Some people are suggesting that ticket can be given to Tariq Rehman’s wife Zubaida Rehman or his daughter Jaima Rehman.

Names of local leaders also in discussion

Names of some local leaders are also emerging as candidates. These include the names of Bogura district BNP president and former mayor of Bogura municipality Rezaul Karim (Badsha), former district president and former mayor AKM Mahbubur Rahman, former district president Saiful Islam, former Bogura-7 MP Helaluzzaman Talukdar and BNP media cell convenor Maudud Hussain Alamgir (Pavel).

Party high command will decide

In this matter, Bogura district BNP’s acting general secretary and Bogura-4 MP Mosharraf Hussain said, “The candidate for the seat vacated by BNP President and Prime Minister Tariq Rahman has not been decided yet. When the date of by-election is announced, then the party leadership will announce the name of the candidate on time.”

He further said, “Bogura-6 and Bogura-7 seats are considered to be the seats of Zia family. Earlier, Khaleda Zia had won a big victory on both the seats. In this election, the party president has also won with a huge vote. Only the party president will decide whether a member of the Zia family or any other leader will be the candidate in the by-election.”

Bangladesh Election 2026: In the 13th parliamentary elections held in Bangladesh, Bangladesh Nationalist Party BNP has won with full majority. Now BNP is going to form the government and party chief Tariq Rehman will be the next Prime Minister of the country. Tariq Rehman will take oath along with his cabinet on Tuesday. However, before the oath, the discussion has intensified regarding who will be included in the new cabinet.

According to the report of Pratham Aalo, this time, along with experienced leaders, young and talented people will also be given place in the Tariq Rehman cabinet. It is being told that some senior leaders may not be seen in the cabinet. Representation of the entire country and different religions is also being considered in the cabinet, so that every section gets a place.

Tariq Rehman’s possible ministers

The names being discussed in the possible cabinet of Tariq Rehman include Humayun Kabir, Dr. Reza Kibria, Amir Khasru Mahmood Chaudhary, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Mohammad Asadujamman, Salahuddin Ahmed, Mirza Abbas, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Azam Zahid Hussain and Nazrul Islam Khan. Apart from this, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy is also expected to get a big responsibility.

Meeting with opposition leaders before oath

BNP President and Prime Minister nominee Tariq Rahman met opposition leaders on Sunday, February 15, 2026, two days before the swearing-in of the new government. As a sign of reconciliation, he visited the residence of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Shafiqur Rehman. At that time, Jamaat-e-Islami was discussing the demand of counting of votes in 32 parliamentary constituencies with the alliance of 11 parties. Tariq Rehman also met National Citizen Party convenor Naheed Islam. Now the eyes of the whole country are on which faces get a place in the cabinet of the new government and in which direction the politics of Bangladesh will go in future.

Bangladesh Politics: This time there has been a big and shocking turn in the politics of Bangladesh. After the general elections, three such leaders have suddenly become lucky, who till some time back were facing serious charges and some of whom had even received death sentence. Among these, two leaders are from Bangladesh Nationalist Party, which is led by Tariq Rahman, and one leader is associated with Jamaat-e-Islami.

These three leaders were involved in big matters at the time when Sheikh Hasina left the country and went to India. After this, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus returned and took over the power of Bangladesh. After his arrival, all the cases pending against these three leaders were closed.

Who are these three leaders?

The first two leaders are Lutfozzaman Babar and Abdus Salam Pintu, who are from Bangladesh Nationalist Party. The third leader is ATM Azharul Islam, who is associated with Jamaat-e-Islami. Now all three are going to be part of the new Parliament. This is the same Bangladesh, whose relations with India have been tense for some time.

In December 2024, a Bangladesh court acquitted Tariq Rahman, Lutfozzaman Babar and some others in cases related to the grenade attack of 21 August 2004. This attack was targeted at Sheikh Hasina. She was saved, but 24 people lost their lives in this attack. In this election, Lutfozzaman Babar defeated his nearest rival by about one lakh sixty thousand votes.

Pintu is a name of concern for India

India is said to be more concerned about Babar’s companion Abdus Salam Pintu. About a year after Babar’s acquittal, Pintu also got relief and the charges against him were dropped. Pintu was accused of supporting a terrorist organization of Pakistan, which is accused of many attacks in India. These include the blast in Varanasi court complex, blast in Ajmer Sharif Dargah and blasts in Delhi. This time Pintu has won by about two lakh votes.

story of azhar ul islam

The third “lucky” leader is Azhar ul Islam, an old leader of Jamaat. He has been in politics since 1998 and was also the General Secretary of the organization till 2012. He was accused of being responsible for the death of more than twelve hundred people during the liberation war of 1971. Apart from this, thirteen rape cases were also registered against him. In all these cases, he was sentenced to death in 2014, but later during the Yunus regime, he was pardoned and acquitted of all charges. The names of these three leaders were once associated with the death penalty, but now in a few days, when Tariq Rahman will take oath, all three of them will sit in the Parliament of Bangladesh.

Delhi’s vision and future politics

From New Delhi’s perspective, this election result shows a completely different path from the era of the Yunus-led interim government. According to Indian officials, that time was full of turmoil. Now everyone’s eyes are on Tariq Rehman. Indian officials are expressing “cautious optimism” about them. He believes that even though there may have been differences with his party’s governments earlier, now Tariq Rehman can adopt a more practical policy considering the economic needs of the country and the peace of the region.

Bangladesh Politics: Bangladesh is currently standing at a major turning point in its history. After the collapse of the Awami League, the responsibility of the country came into the hands of Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Mohammad Yunus. As soon as he became the Chief Advisor, he talked about handling the broken system and paving the way for such elections which will decide the future of the country. After the big victory of Tariq Rehman in the elections, now Yunus will have to step down. With this, efforts to rebuild the country will begin.

Yunus’s journey

Dr. Yunus is known all over the world for bringing the idea of small loans i.e. microcredit to the poor. After the terrible famine of 1974, he realized that teaching alone was not enough, money was also needed to advance the poor. Grameen Bank was started with this thinking. After becoming the caretaker PM, he had a big challenge to fix the government machinery of the country. In August 2024, he returned from exile at the call of protesters and said that he had found a completely broken system. He clearly said that the country should not be allowed to go towards dictatorship again.

Direction of reforms and elections
Yunus government said that just conducting elections is not enough, after the elections the country will also have to be taken on the right path. For this a “reform charter” was prepared. Addressing the nation on 19 January, Yunus appealed to support the referendum and said that if people voted “yes” it would pave the way for a new Bangladesh.

Political situation and tension
The situation is not easy. Awami League has been barred from contesting elections. Party chief Sheikh Hasina is currently in exile in India and faces serious allegations. In November last year, the International Criminal Tribunal sentenced him to death for ordering the use of lethal force during the August 2024 protests. He also got a separate life sentence for crimes against civilians.

On the other hand, Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Tariq Rahman returned from London after two decades in December and emerged as a major contender for the post of PM. Their main contest was with Jamaat-e-Islami, but in this fight BNP registered a clear victory. Meanwhile, incidents of communal tension and violence in the country are also raising concerns. The murder of student leader Sharif Usman Hadi in December further heated up the atmosphere.

Awami League’s opposition

Awami League has completely rejected the election process announced by the Yunus government. The party termed the election date of February 12, 2026 as illegal and attacked the current administration in strong words. The party says that fair elections are not possible under this government. After the fall of Hasina government, relations with India have also soured.

This time there is a lot of discussion about Jamaat in Bangladesh elections. Meanwhile, voting for the general elections has started in the neighboring country. Elections are being held on 300 seats in Bangladesh. During this time, Jamaat-e-Islami, which has been opposing the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan, now seems to be making an important place for itself in the electoral scenario of Bangladesh. Jamaat-e-Islami, which was considered the opponent of Bangladesh liberation movement for the last several decades, is now being seen as the main rival of BNP in the elections of Bangladesh.

Jamaat-e-Islami leader Shafiqur Rehman, who remained in jail for years, and his party Jamaat-e-Islami were banned from elections on charges of promoting fundamentalist thinking and fanaticism. Now the same Shafikur Rahman has become the poster boy of Bangladesh. Shafiqur Rahman, a 67-year-old doctor by profession, is also a contender for the post of Prime Minister from Jamaat-e-Islami Alliance. Shafiqur Rehman joined Jamaat in the year 1984 and was made the President of Jamaat-e-Islami in the year 2019-20. NCP, which emerged from the student movement, is also included in this alliance led by Shafiqur Rahman.

Jamaat-e-Islami fundamentalist organization

Jamaat-e-Islami first acquired stake in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party government in 2001. At that time some members of Jamaat were part of the cabinet. Khaleda Zia used to be the Prime Minister of Bangladesh in 2001, but whenever Sheikh Hasina was in power, she kept strict restrictions on Jamaat-e-Islami. Jamaat-e-Islami has been seen as a fundamentalist organization. The thinking of this organization is considered extremist. However, Shafiqur Rahman is trying to present the image of this organization in a different way in the elections of 2026. Some leaders of the Jamaat are now seen talking about humanity instead of religion. The thinking of the leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami has been seen to be quite narrow. Especially in the matter of giving representation to women, this party has very conservative thinking. In the general elections of 2026, Jamaat-e-Islami has not fielded a woman candidate on even a single seat.

Talk of better relations with India

In the past, Jamaat-e-Islami has been seen more inclined towards Pakistan. However, in the changing equation, when there is a direct fight between Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP in Bangladesh, Jamaat-e-Islami is talking about better relations with other neighboring countries including India. Jamaat-e-Islami has a student organization, which is known as Chhatra Shibir. After the coup of 2024, Chhatra Shibir has won the elections of 4 student organizations including Dhaka University. In the general elections, Jamaat-e-Islami is contesting on 224 seats and its main ally NCP is on 30 seats. Candidates from other 9 parties are contesting on the remaining seats.

Promise of corruption free government

Jamaat-e-Islami is promising a corruption-free government in its election campaign. Apart from this, more emphasis is being laid on Islamic rules and regulations. Not only this, its leaders are appealing to move away from BNP and Awami League and vote for Jamaat once. Jamaat has made corruption a big issue in the elections. NCP’s presence with Jamaat-e-Islami strengthens its equation, but Awami League supporters can never go with Jamaat. In such a situation, even if it is a compulsion, Awami League supporters can go with BNP. If this happens then the Jamaat will get a big blow. The minority community of Bangladesh is also not comfortable with the Jamaat. There are many concerns about Jamaat among the minorities of Bangladesh. Especially women have many questions regarding their rules and regulations. In such a situation, about 9 percent minority of Bangladesh may be seen keeping distance from the community. Not only this, there remains a fear from the Jamaat regarding election violence.

Ticket given to Hindu candidate also

Amidst these doubts and questions, Jamaat-e-Islami has also given ticket to a Hindu candidate on Khulna-1 seat of Bangladesh. This is being considered a symbolic step, Jamaat is trying to give the message through this ticket that it is not away from the minority community, but just one ticket is not enough to win the hearts and trust of the minority community. They remain worried about their safety and future. It is true that Jamaat-e-Islami will never get a chance for better elections, but will Jamaat-e-Islami be able to change its thinking and ways along with these elections? This is a very big question, the answer to which perhaps even Jamaat-e-Islami does not know.
