Bengal Assembly Election 2026: Bengal Election The exit polls that came immediately after its passing are indicating that now Mamata Banerjee’s departure from power in Bengal is certain. Mamata Banerjee, who was in power for the last 15 years, came to power by destroying the stronghold built by the Left for 35 years. But BJP has written the script of Mamata’s departure in just 15 years. Anti-incumbency, serious allegations of corruption and continuous violence in Bengal have shaken people’s trust in Mamata Banerjee’s government.

At the same time, BJP was continuously trying to fill the vacuum left by the weakening of Congress and then the Left, and this time the exit poll data shows that BJP seems to be successful in that effort.

Also read- ‘I have been contesting elections since 1984, but this time…’, what did Mamata say about victory in Bengal?

These exit polls are also an indication that doing politics through only one person at the center of power has cost TMC dearly and the party has to bear the loss in this election. However, this election has not been that weak for TMC, because even though all the exit polls are showing majority for BJP, TMC is also behind BJP by very few seats.

Also read- Tamil Nadu Exit Poll 2026: Twist in Tamil Nadu’s exit poll! People want to make him CM, not Stalin, know his name

If TMC can take a lesson from this exit poll, then it definitely has a lesson for it that it cannot remain in power for a long time only through the slogans of Maa-Mati and Manush, but for that it is also necessary to ensure law and order, employment and to fulfill the basic needs of the people.

Mamta government’s laxity on issues like RG Kar rape case and Sandeshkhali infuriated people. The issue of IPAC, which was handling Mamata Banerjee’s political campaign, getting entangled in the coal scam and Mamata Banerjee herself going to IPAC office to save her, not only backfired in the court, but also made Mamata’s image negative among the public. The result of all this is hidden in the exit poll data.

Bengal Assembly Election 2026: Just before the second phase of West Bengal Assembly elections, the Election Commission has made it clear that this time any kind of irregularities will not be tolerated. Unprecedented security arrangements have been made on 142 seats for the voting to be held on April 29, so that voters can exercise their rights without fear.

Like the first phase, this time too peaceful and fair voting will be ensured at all costs. According to sources, the Commission has given clear instructions that separate deployment should be done in each assembly constituency and ‘area dominance’ should be increased in sensitive areas. That means security forces will not only be present, but will also actively patrol and control the environment.

Under this strategy, Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel riding on 160 motorcycles will patrol continuously. There will be two soldiers on each bike, so that immediate response can be given in case of any emergency. Its objective is fast response, strong presence and trust among voters.

Also read- West Bengal Elections 2026: Amit Shah is overjoyed at the bumper voting in Bengal, predicted the seats, told who will be the CM.

CCTV cameras will be installed at every polling station and deployment of central forces will be ensured. Also, no unauthorized person will be allowed to come within 100 meters of the polling station.

Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Aggarwal clearly said, “We have requested everyone to ensure peaceful and normal voting. Fake voting or booth capturing will not be allowed. People should exercise their democratic rights without any fear. Action will be taken against anyone who tries to stop it.”

Why is this face special

This face-off on 142 seats is special because these areas are considered the core strongholds of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led TMC—the urban belt of South Bengal and Kolkata, where the party has long had a strong hold. The record 93% voting in the first phase has clearly indicated that voters are very active this time. This is the reason why the competition has become more intense in the second phase.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and the top leadership of BJP are continuously campaigning on these seats. BJP’s strategy is clear – to make a dent in South Bengal, cross the mark of 77 seats in 2021 and strengthen itself in the race for power. The importance of this phase also increases because voting is to be held on many high-profile seats. Most of the attention is on Bhawanipur seat, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has a direct contest with Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Suvendu Adhikari.

Voting on which most important seats

The 142 seats to be voted in the second phase of West Bengal elections cover the most important political areas of the state. These seats are spread across eight electoral districts—Kolkata North, Kolkata South, Howrah, Nadia, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Hooghly and East Burdwan. This is the reason why this phase is being considered as the ‘nerve center’ of the elections.

If we look at the figures, the dominance of Trinamool Congress (TMC) was clearly visible in these areas in the 2021 elections. Despite aggressive campaigning by BJP, TMC had won 123 out of 142 seats. BJP was reduced to only 18 seats, while Left ally Indian Secular Front (ISF) got one seat. The distribution of seats also shows the importance of this phase. There are 11 seats in Kolkata North and South together, 16 in Howrah, 17 in Nadia, maximum 33 seats in North 24 Parganas, 31 in South 24 Parganas, 18 in Hooghly and 16 in East Burdwan.

The fate of big faces will be decided

The biggest feature of the second phase is that many big and influential faces are in the electoral fray, whose victory or defeat can affect the entire political equation. This phase is especially important for Trinamool Congress (TMC), because many senior leaders of the party are putting their credibility at stake.

Everyone’s eyes are on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s seat, but apart from this, big names like Mayor Firhad Hakim from Kolkata Port, Minister of State for Finance Chandrima Bhattacharya from Dumdum North, Industries Minister Shashi Panja from Shyampukur, Electricity Minister Arup Biswas from Tollygunge, Education Minister Bratya Basu from Dumdum and Minister of State for Fire Sujit Basu from Bidhannagar are also in the fray. The performance of these leaders will decide how strongly TMC is able to defend its urban stronghold.

On the other hand, BJP has also made this phase a battle of prestige. The party has fielded the mother of a junior doctor from Panihati, who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata in October 2024 – a decision that gives an emotional turn to the elections. Apart from this, BJP has fielded former Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta from Rashbehari and actress-politician Roopa Ganguly from Sonarpur South, making the contest more interesting.

Battle of Bhawanipur: A battle of prestige, mathematics and pressure

Bhawanipur seat of South Kolkata has become the most high-profile battle of this election. Here Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is in direct competition with her former aide and now BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. Adhikari is also contesting from Nandigram—the same seat where he defeated Mamata by about 1,900 votes in 2021. This background has made the battle of Bhawanipur more symbolic.

Also read- Exit Poll 2026 Date: First phase ends in West Bengal, voting completed in Assam-Kerala-Tamil Nadu, when will the exit poll come?

This time the equations have changed. After the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Election Commission, names of about 51,000 voters in Bhawanipur have been removed from the list, which is about 21% of the total voters. This cut is being considered a challenge for Mamata Banerjee, especially because her victory margin in the 2021 by-election was around 58,800 votes.

In the last phase of elections, Mamata has intensified her focus on Bhawanipur. She is not only holding regular meetings with party workers, but for the first time she is also conducting a comprehensive campaign at the grassroots level. To attract the large number of non-Bengali voters here, Mamata is reaching out to Jain temples and Sikh Gurudwaras. Also, direct communication is being established with voters living in high-rise societies through closed-door meetings and padyatras.

On the voting held in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar said that this is the highest graph of voting after independence. He said, ‘The highest polling percentage in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu since independence. The Election Commission salutes every voter of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

Highest voting after independence

With 84.69% voting in Tamil Nadu and 91.78% voting in West Bengal (Phase-I), the highest ever voting participation was recorded since independence. Earlier, the highest voting participation was in Tamil Nadu at 78.29% (2011) and West Bengal at 84.72% (2011). In both West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, the share of women in voting is higher than that of men.

‘People voted without fear’

West Bengal CEO Manoj Kumar Aggarwal said, ‘The first phase of voting was completed today. There were 152 assembly seats and 45,000 booths… Voting is still going on at some places, while at some places paperwork is being done and EVMs are being sealed. They will be sent to the strong room. He said, ‘People voted without any fear. I have received reports that they were quite happy with the arrangements and incidents have also reduced. I want to thank all political parties and all concerned for fair and peaceful elections.

According to the data released from the Election Commission, till 6 pm, about 84.64 percent voting was recorded in Tamil Nadu and about 91.74 percent voting was recorded in West Bengal. These figures have clearly indicated that this time voters participated enthusiastically in the democratic process. During the first phase of voting in West Bengal, more than 90 percent voting was recorded in many districts, which is considered a big achievement.

District wise voting figures

According to district-wise data, the highest voting percentage was recorded in South Dinajpur at 94.77 percent, in Cooch Behar 94.40 percent, in Birbhum 93.61 percent and in Jalpaiguri 93.01 percent. Apart from this, 92.22 percent voting took place in Malda, 92.88 percent in Murshidabad, 92.04 percent in North Dinajpur and 91.78 percent in Jhargram. At the same time, in districts like Alipurduar, Bankura, West Medinipur and East Medinipur, the voting percentage remained between 89 to 91. Areas like Darjeeling (88.01 per cent) and Kalimpong (82.93 per cent) recorded relatively lower, but still strong, turnout.

Fate of 1,478 candidates will be decided

Voting in 16 districts of the state will decide the electoral fate of 1,478 candidates, including 167 women, in 152 constituencies of the 294-member state assembly. Voting started at seven in the morning. Despite the scorching heat and humidity, voters were seen standing in large queues outside the polling stations since morning and as time passed, the pace of voting increased. Sporadic incidents of violence in some districts, including attacks on candidates, created tension in the electoral environment of Bengal.

This time the contest in the electoral arena of West Bengal has become even more interesting. A symbolic conflict of “Ram Mandir vs Babri Masjid” has arisen within a radius of about 90 kilometers between Shantipur in Nadia and Beldanga in Murshidabad. The special thing is that the candidates representing both the parties have rebelled against their respective parties and entered the fray. One is a former face associated with BJP and the other is a leader who has separated from TMC. In such a situation, this election has become not just a fight for seats, but a big test of identity, religion and political strategy, on which the eyes of the entire state are fixed.

Ram temple’s support to those who separated from BJP
Before the assembly elections to be held on 29 April 2026 in Shantipur of Nadia district of West Bengal, politics has taken a unique form. The contest here is now being seen not just between parties, but as “Ram versus Ram”. Shantipur is a place of historical and religious importance. This is the land where the great 15th century poet Kritibas Ojha was born. He made the Bengali adaptation of Valmiki Ramayana, which is still read with wide devotion in Bengal. Taking this legacy forward, Arindam Bhattacharya is developing ‘Shri Kritibas Ram Mandir’ and a heritage corridor on the banks of Ganga on 15 bighas of land. This Arindam is trying his luck as an independent candidate. He lost the election in 2021 on BJP ticket. In 2016, he became MLA for the first time on Congress ticket.

The special thing is that the form of the temple will be on the lines of Ayodhya, but the idol of Ram installed in it will be in ‘Bengali form’ according to Kritibasi Ramayana. This temple is being built in Champatola, Sadughat area, which is about 90 kilometers from Beldanga in Murshidabad—where the construction of a replica of Babri Masjid in Beldanga has also been in the news.

Babri Masjid also with the support of rebel
Bengal elections are now becoming the center of not only political but also cultural and religious debate. Suspended TMC MLA and founder of Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) Humayun Kabir has announced to build a mosque on the model of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, due to which political controversy has intensified. This mosque being built in Beldanga, Murshidabad is being called ‘Bengal Babri Masjid’. Kabir has laid its foundation stone and claimed that this project will be completed in two years.

Before the 2026 assembly elections, this step is being directly linked to vote bank politics. Kabir is now contesting from Nawada seat under the banner of his new party AJUP and is challenging TMC. Many parties including BJP have expressed strong objection to this issue, due to which the politics of Bengal seems to be becoming more polarized before the elections.

After all, this election has become not just a battle of victory and defeat, but of narrative. This contest between rebel candidates will tell whether the people of Bengal choose emotional issues or political credibility. After the results are out, its impact on the politics of the state will be visible far and wide.

Amidst the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026, AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi has announced to break the alliance with Humayun Kabir’s party. He said that his party will contest the elections alone in Bengal. The party has given this information through a post on social media. Owaisi has taken this decision after the uproar created after an alleged video of Humayun Kabir went viral on social media.

AIMIM posted on social media platform X and wrote, ‘Humayun Kabir’s revelations have exposed the insecurity of the Muslims of Bengal. AIMIM cannot support any such statement which raises questions on the dignity of Muslims. From today AIMIM has withdrawn its alliance with Kabir’s party. Muslims of Bengal are one of the poorest, neglected and exploited communities. Despite decades of secular rule, nothing has been done for them. The party’s policy regarding contesting elections in any state is that the marginalized communities should get an independent political voice. We will contest Bengal elections independently and will not forge an alliance with any party in future.

Uproar over Humayun Kabir’s viral video

A political controversy broke out in West Bengal on Thursday (April 9) after an alleged video of Humayun Kabir surfaced on social media. In the video, he is seen allegedly claiming to have links with senior BJP leaders and making efforts to defeat Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the assembly elections. Trinamool Congress (TMC) shared this in the press conference and demanded an ED investigation into the claims of Kabir’s alleged closeness with Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Subhendu Adhikari, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the PMO.

In the video, Kabir is reportedly heard saying that he is ready to go to ‘any extent’ to remove Banerjee from power and that he is in touch with senior BJP leaders including Suvendu Adhikari. Kabir, who founded ‘Aam Janata Unnayan Party’ days after being suspended from Trinamool late last year, is also said to have approached the PMO and was advised to coordinate with leaders of other BJP-ruled states.

Kabir is also reportedly seen in the video saying that his strategy is centered around wresting minority votes from the ruling Trinamool Congress, indicating that such a change could benefit the BJP electorally. He reportedly mentioned the need for crores of rupees to implement this strategy in all constituencies.

The Election Commission has taken major action amid the election atmosphere in West Bengal. The Election Commission (ECI) has suspended the police officers responsible for negligence in law and order during the nomination rally of Suvendu Adhikari in Bhawanipur on April 2. Union Home Minister Amit Shah was also present in the rally and questions were raised regarding law and order. At the same time, Trinamool Congress has accused EC’s action of adopting a biased attitude.

The blame fell on these policemen

The police personnel against whom the Election Commission has taken action include Siddharth Dutta (DC-II, South Division, Kolkata Police), Priyankar Chakraborty (Officer-in-Charge, Alipore), Chandi Charan Banerjee (Additional OC, Alipore) and Saurabh Chatterjee (Sergeant, Alipore). All of them have been suspended and disciplinary action has been initiated against them.

What is the whole matter?

This action of the Election Commission is a major action taken in connection with the tension that broke out on April 1 near the convoy of Opposition Leader of West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. His convoy was marching towards Alipore Survey Bhawan in South Kolkata. It was here that Suvendu Adhikari was about to file his nomination. There was a security lapse during this period.

Suvendu Adhikari contesting from two seats

EC has written a letter to West Bengal Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariyala requesting him to suspend the four policemen and take departmental action against them. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is contesting from Bhawanipur, one of the hot seats of Bengal. He filed his nomination on 2 April. During this, Union Home Minister Amit Shah was also present. Let us tell you that Suvendu Adhikari is contesting on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket from Bhawanipur and Nandigram constituencies in two phases of West Bengal Assembly elections.

Voting will be held in two phases in West Bengal

Voting will be held in two phases in West Bengal. Voting will be held in the first phase on 23 April and in the second phase on 29 April. The election results will be released on May 4. At the same time, senior leaders of political parties are visiting Bengal amid the assembly elections. A war of words is also being seen between leaders of different parties.

West Bengal Election 2026: A new trend is emerging before the West Bengal elections. Bengali migrants working in Delhi are rapidly returning to their villages and cities. Reason? Fear of deletion of name from voter list and uneasiness about voting in elections. Many migrant laborers say that they do not want to take risks after the news of irregularities and deletion of names in the voter list. There is a chance for improvement till April 19 before the voting on April 23 and 29, so people are returning home early.

What are the migrants saying?
A migrant laborer said that his name has not yet appeared in the voter list. Of the four brothers in his family, the names of only one are registered in the list, while the remaining three are currently considered “foreigners”. He said that most of the people in his colony are planning to go home to vote, but due to the large number of people travelling, it is becoming difficult to get tickets.

He also said that names of some people, especially those who voted in 2002, have been included in the list, but many names have come late or are still pending. However, there is a chance for improvement till April 19, so people can get the verification done again. He said, “Our vote is on 23rd and we will definitely go to vote. People of the entire colony will go, but because of the large number of people, there is a problem of ticket. My name has not yet appeared in the list. Of the four brothers, only one’s name is there, the other three are not. Right now, three of us brothers are considered ‘foreigners’ and one ‘Indian’. That is, the fear is not only of casting the vote, but also of losing the identity.”

Allegations of name deletion, even family affected
Many such cases have come to light where names of some people from the same family are in the list, while some are not. A migrant woman from Cooch Behar said that she was planning to go home with her family to vote. He expressed confidence that such problems are not so widespread now, but also admitted that such problems have come up in the past. The woman says, “Yes, I will also go to vote with my family. I have not heard much like this yet. The names of many of my relatives were earlier removed from the voter list.”

Another migrant said that his name is in the list, but his wife’s name has been removed without any reason. She said such cases are not isolated. He said, “Yes, we will go to vote. The names have been removed—my wife’s vote has been removed. My name is there, but I don’t know why my wife’s was removed. There are many such cases. In our family, the names of two people—my wife and sister-in-law—have been removed from the list.”

SIR became the root of controversy
Actually, this entire matter is related to Special Intensive Revision (SIR). After this process, the total number of voters in the state has reduced by about 61 lakhs from 7.66 crores to 7.04 crores. About 60 lakh names were under investigation, many of which are still under dispute. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has already alleged that this process is an attempt to snatch away the voting rights of the people.

Anger increased at the grassroots level
In Malda, ‘Bangla Pakso’ organization has started a fast against the removal of names from the voter list. The organization alleges that Bengali speaking citizens are being systematically excluded from the list. The organization has warned that if there is no improvement soon, there will be a statewide agitation.

Why is this issue important?
In a state like Bengal, where every vote counts, withdrawal of lakhs of names can affect the election results. This is not just a question of elections, but is becoming a question of democratic rights, where identity, citizenship and vote are linked.

The mother of the victim of the rape and murder case of RG Kar Medical College in West Bengal has expressed her desire to contest elections on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket. On Thursday (March 19, 2026) she said that she wants to contest the Bengal Assembly elections as a BJP candidate.

He said that his motive behind contesting the elections is to adopt the political path to remove the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. In August 2024, a trainee doctor was raped and then murdered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The doctor was 31 years old at that time. This incident had created outrage in the entire country.

Doctors and civil society groups had held prolonged demonstrations across the state to protest against the incident. The mother of the victim doctor told reporters that she is likely to contest from Panihati constituency of North 24 Parganas, and the BJP will soon release a candidate list in which her name is likely to be included.

The victim’s mother said that she had earlier received an offer from BJP, but she was not mentally prepared at that time. She said, ‘I had received an offer (to contest elections) from BJP long ago, but I was not mentally prepared at that time. Yesterday I decided to accept it and contest the elections because I want to end the Home Minister’s rule. He said this while referring to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who also holds the charge of the Home Department.

The victim’s mother alleged that the state government has tried to obstruct the investigation and justice process in her daughter’s case. She said, ‘I am entering politics to ensure justice for my daughter and remove this government from power.’ BJP leader Arjun Singh had recently met the parents of the victim doctor.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made a scathing attack on the action of the Election Commission. He alleged that the Election Commission is taking unprecedented and worrying steps targeting West Bengal.

Mamata Banerjee said through a post on the social media platform He called it not administrative action but high level political interference.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that impartial institutions are being politicized, which is a direct attack on the Constitution. On one hand, the flawed SIR process is going on and more than 200 people have lost their lives so far, while on the other hand, the attitude of the Commission appears to be biased. Till now the supplementary voter list has not been released, which is ignoring the instructions of the Supreme Court. Due to this, there is an atmosphere of anxiety and confusion among the common citizens.

Mamata Banerjee alleged that senior officers of important departments like IB, STF and CID are being selectively removed and sent out of the state, due to which an attempt is being made to weaken the administrative structure.

He also targeted BJP and raised the question as to why BJP is so restless and why Bengal is being targeted again and again. He said that even after 78 years of independence, it is very unfortunate that people have to stand in queues to prove their citizenship.

The Chief Minister also mentioned the contradiction in the decisions of the Election Commission. He said that on one hand the Commission says that the removed officers will not be put on election duty, while on the other hand within a few hours they are made election observers and sent out.

He also raised questions over appointing the police commissioners of Siliguri and Bidhannagar as observers without giving them any option, due to which these two important cities were left without leadership for some time. However, this mistake was later rectified. Mamata Banerjee termed it anarchy, confusion and inefficiency and said that all this is part of a well-planned conspiracy, the aim of which is to control Bengal through institutions.

He described it as ‘undeclared emergency’ and ‘President’s rule like situation’. Also said that BJP has failed to win the trust of the people, hence now it wants to gain power through pressure, fear and misuse of institutions. The Chief Minister expressed solidarity with the state officials and their families and said that Bengal will never bow down to fear. He clearly said, ‘Bengal will fight, protest and foil every conspiracy.’
