Top Coal Rich Countries in World: Even today, a large part of the world’s population depends on coal for electricity and industry. From power generation to steel, cement and many heavy industries, coal is considered the backbone of the global economy, although many countries are now moving towards green energy like solar and wind energy, but after this the demand for coal has not completely ended. There are some countries in the world which have such large reserves of coal that they can meet their energy needs for many decades to come. At the same time, some countries are becoming the biggest exporters of coal and supplying it to the whole world. India is also moving forward rapidly in this list. The country has one of the largest coal reserves in the world and India has now reached second place in terms of production. In such a situation, let us know where there is maximum coal in the world and how much coal does India have in store?

Where is the most coal in the world?

China is the largest coal producing country in the world. China alone produces almost half of the world’s coal. There are huge coal mines and strong mining infrastructure here. China produces about 4.1 billion tons of coal every year. The country has reserves of about 143 billion tonnes of coal. Even today, about 55 percent of the electricity generated in China is generated from coal. This is the reason why China, despite being the largest producer, does not export much coal, because most of its coal is used for domestic needs only.

How much coal reserves does India have?

India has now become the second largest coal producing country in the world. Due to rapidly increasing population and demand for electricity, the need for coal in India is continuously increasing. India has huge reserves of about 319 billion tonnes of coal, which is among the largest reserves in the world. The country is producing about 88 crore tonnes of coal every year. About 70 percent of electricity production in India is still based on coal. To increase domestic production, the government is allowing mining to private companies and is also auctioning new coal mines. Although India is growing rapidly in production, its share in exports is still low because consumption in the country is very high.
World’s largest coal exporting countries

1. Indonesia – Indonesia is considered the world’s largest coal exporter. The thermal coal here is of very high quality, which is in high demand in Asian countries. Indonesia produces about 620 million tons of coal every year and exports about 480 million tons of it to other countries. Countries like India, China and Japan buy large quantities of coal from Indonesia. The low sulfur coal here is considered very useful for power plants.

2. America – America has the world’s largest coal reserve. There are said to be reserves of more than 250 billion tonnes of coal here. America produces about 525 million tons of coal every year. Although the use of new energy is gradually increasing there, America is still among the world’s largest coal exporters. America especially exports metallurgical coal used in the steel industry. Its coal goes to many countries in Europe and Asia.

Also read – Where is Delhi’s Gymkhana, how much is the land there? Know real estate prices
3. Australia – Australia is counted among the world’s largest coal exporters. The coking coal here is considered very important for making steel. Australia produces about 550 million tonnes of coal every year and exports about 390 million tonnes. Japan, China and India are its biggest customers. Also, due to strong port and railway network, Australia is maintaining its strong hold in the global market.
Why is the demand for coal increasing rapidly in Asia?

The demand for coal is continuously increasing in the Asia-Pacific region. In India, China and South-East Asia countries, coal is being used on a large scale for industries and electricity production. This is the reason why countries like Indonesia and Australia are continuously strengthening their ports, railways and logistics networks so that more and more can be exported. Now in the world, the demand for not only more coal but also better quality coal is increasing rapidly.

The demand for coking coal used in the steel industry is highest. This is especially benefiting countries like Australia and America, where high quality coal is available. Although the world is now moving rapidly towards green energy, experts believe that coal will not be completely eliminated for many decades to come. Coal is still considered the cheapest and most reliable fuel in power production and heavy industries.

Iran War Impact on Indian Economy: The impact of the Iran-America-Israel war has now directly reached the farmers of India. In March 2026, the production of fertilizer and urea in the country has fallen by 24.6 percent as compared to a year ago i.e. March 2025, which means about one-fourth less fertilizer was produced. This data has been released by the Commerce Ministry of the Central Government.

Urea production started decreasing due to rust

Fertilizer production has fallen by 24.6 percent in March 2026 as compared to March 2025, that is, about one fourth less fertilizer was produced. Natural gas is required to make urea. This gas largely comes from the Middle East i.e. Gulf countries, but due to the Iran war, the movement in Hormuz i.e. the sea route through which Gulf oil and gas goes around the world, almost came to a standstill. About one-third of the world’s fertilizer passes through this route. If the road was closed then gas did not come and if gas did not come then urea could not be made.

Now the Kharif season i.e. the time for sowing of paddy, maize and soybean is about to come. Urea is needed the most in this season. More than 45 percent of the country’s population is dependent on agriculture. If there is less urea, then either the farmer will have to buy fertilizer at an expensive price or the crop will be less. In both the circumstances, the farmer is at a loss.

Not only fertilizers but other sectors also faltered

Crude oil production has decreased by 5.7 percent. Coal has come down by 4 percent. Electricity production also decreased by 0.5 percent. Less coal means less electricity, this is a direct connection. Domestic production of natural gas increased by 6.4 percent, this has brought some relief. Steel i.e. iron and steel production has increased by 2.2 percent. Cement remained above 4 percent as construction work on roads and houses continued in the country.

The combined index of eight major industries fell by 0.4 percent in March 2026. It increased by only 2.6 percent in the entire financial year 2025-26, which is much less than in the last several years. Now that the Strait of Hormuz is still closed, the figures for April and May may be worse. The government will have to arrange for alternative supply of urea as soon as possible, otherwise both farmers and inflation can become a problem.

Condition of 8 big sectors of India amid Iran war

Coal – 4% fall – impact on supply of imported coal due to disruption in shipping routes.

Fertilizer – 24.6% fall – the biggest shock. Production halted due to stoppage of supply of urea and phosphate from Iran

Crude oil – fell 5.7% – tension on Hormuz affected crude oil supply to domestic refineries

Electricity — decreased by 0.5% – Coal shortage and expensive LNG depressed electricity production slightly.

Natural Gas – increased by 6.4% – Domestic production gave relief but LNG imports became expensive.

Refinery products – increased by only 0.1%. Despite the war, the refineries somehow kept running, a big relief.

Steel – increased by 2.2% – domestic demand remained strong, direct impact of war less.

Cement – increased by 4% – infra project continued, demand remained in the market.

Shyamlal Babu Rai: Shyamlal Babu Rai is the name of one of those great lyricists of Hindi cinema, whose amazing songs are still alive in the minds of people. He touched millions of hearts with his wonderful songs. The world loves and respects him by the name of Indivar. In his long journey of four decades, he wrote more than a thousand evergreen songs for more than 300 films.

Simplicity, depth of emotions and truth of life are so embedded in Indeevar’s words that even today they resonate with freshness. Indeevar’s songs are not just music but an immortal collection of emotions, which will stay with people for generations. The death anniversary of Hindi cinema’s evergreen lyricist Indeevar is on 27th February.

Indeevar: From Struggle to Success

Indivar was born in Barua Sagar town of Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh. He was interested in poetry and song writing since childhood. During the freedom struggle, he wrote many patriotic songs in the name of Azad. After marriage, he came to Mumbai and went through days full of struggle. In 1946, he wrote songs for the first time for the film Double Face, but the film did not do well.

He got his real recognition in 1951 from the film Malhar, where his song ‘Bade Armaan Se Rakh Hai Balam Teri Kasam’ in Roshan’s music became a superhit. In the year 1963, his song ‘O Narik Ho, Naaz Se Bhi Tum Pyar Se Bhi Pyaari’ in Babubhai Mistry’s film Paras Mani became quite popular. After this his journey did not stop.

Indeevar’s strongest pairing was with composers Kalyanji-Anandji. His songs in Manoj Kumar’s films ‘Upkaar’ and Purab Aur Paschim beautifully weaved the patriotic and social message. Songs like ‘Now you don’t need me’ still make the listeners emotional. Indivar also did wonders in Rakesh Roshan’s films. Songs from films like ‘Kamchor’, ‘Khudgarj’, ‘Khoon Bhari Maang’, ‘Kala Bazaar’, ‘Kishan Kanhaiya’, ‘Karan Arjun’ and ‘Koyla’ won the hearts of the audience.

Immortal song of Indeevar – still alive today

Indeevar also received the Filmfare Award for the song ‘Dil Aisa Kisi Ne Mera Toda’ in Uttam Kumar and Sharmila Tagore’s film Amanush. Indivar was not limited to Hindi films only. He also wrote songs for pop singers Nazia Hasan and Zohaib Hasan. Nazia’s songs like ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’, ‘Boom Boom’, and ‘Chandan Sa Badan’ left a deep impact on the youth.

Indeevar gave immortal songs in dozens of films like Dil Ne Pukara, Saraswati Chandra, Yaadgaar, Safar, Sacha Jhoota, Johnny Mera Naam, Dharmatma, Hera Pheri, Don, Qurbani, Kalakar. There was a unique combination of simplicity and depth in his words. Indeevar left this world on 27 February 1997, but his songs are still alive.

In fact, in the 1990s, film makers in Bollywood mostly made ‘family entertaining’ films. But director Rakesh Roshan crossed the limits in his 1997 film Koyla. In particular, a scene involving actress Deepshikha Nagpal was considered by many people to be crossing limits and later there was a lot of controversy over that scene. Deepshikha has talked about that experience after 28 years.

Deepshikha shared her experience of working in coal
In an interview given to Hindi Rush, Deepshikha shared her experience of working on Coal. She said that while reading the script, she was stunned and was wondering how Rakesh Roshan would shoot this scene. He told, “I asked Rakesh sir, ‘When are we shooting that scene?’ He replied, ‘Do you remember everything?’ I said, ‘Absolutely.’

Deepshikha also revealed that when this scene was being discussed, her mother was also present there. The actress said, “I consoled him and said, ‘Don’t worry. Then I told him how we would shoot it. I told Rakesh sir to keep the camera at shoulder level, so that my tube top was not visible. At that angle it looked as if I was taking off my clothes, but I was fully dressed.’

How Deepshikha shot the naked scene of ‘Koyla’?
He further said, “I wore a swimsuit for the back shot and the shooting was completed without any hassle. When the shooting was completed, I was still wearing jeans. Rakesh sir was surprised that we were able to shoot this scene so easily.” Deepshikha gave credit for the execution of this scene to her technical understanding. She said, “I knew I was fully clothed during the shooting, but when you see the scene, it feels as if I am taking off my clothes. Without technical knowledge, I would never have agreed to do it.”

Deepshikha was trolled for doing a scene without clothes
As soon as the film was released, Deepshikha’s naked scene created a stir. Talking about people’s reaction, Deepshikha said, “There was a lot of uproar at that time. People close to me also started saying, ‘What have you done? You took off your clothes on the screen. These were my own people, and I used to cry over it.’

Daughter had broken the CD
Recalling a personal moment, she said: “I remember my daughter broke the coal CD. I was like, ‘What have I done?’ It seemed as if this one thing had covered my entire career. People made it shameful… something that even my own children might not respect me for.”

Coal Production in India: While America is a global superpower in terms of economy, China is second. But in the field we are talking about, India has become the second economy of the world. India ranks second in coal production with 1085.1 million tonnes, while China is ranked first with 4780.0 million tonnes. In this case, many developed economies including America were left behind.

According to a report by the Statistical Review of World Energy 2024 of the Energy Institute in the latest coal production, coal production in China is four times more than India. In this report, India has been accepted as a global energy power.

India becomes global power in coal production

Significantly, a large source of electricity is coal. India’s hold in the coal sector is strong in the global market. Apart from this, Indonesia is at number three with 836.1 billion tonnes of coal production, while America is at number four with 464.6 million tonnes. That is, in terms of coal production, the countries coming in third and fourth place are far behind India.

Many big countries behind

462.9 million tonnes of coal production is being done in Australia, while 427.2 million tonnes are being produced in Russia. Market experts believe that the increase of coal production in India is a good sign in terms of industrial speed and energy security. However, it is definitely that emphasis is being laid globally on reducing the use of coal in terms of tourism and climate change. But coal fulfills the great need of energy. There is definitely a focus on renewal energy from India.

Coal production: Be it thermal power plant or the steel industry, there is a major demand for coal in the energy sector of India. By the way, there is no shortage of coal in India. The five countries of the world which have the largest reserves of coal include America, Russia, Autllia and China as well as India. But despite this, India needs to get coal from other countries because there is a shortage of coal for better quality like cooking coal in the country. Apart from this, many times there is a need to import coal to meet the increasing domestic demand. Billions of dollars are spent every year.

Government savings in 11 months

However, the government on Tuesday informed about the increase in coal production in the country. Due to this, during April 2024 to February 2025, the import of coal in the country declined 9.2 percent to 220.3 million tonnes (MT). Whereas last year, 242.6 metric tons of coal had to be imported during this period. The coal ministry said that due to this decrease in the import of coal in the last 11 months, the country’s foreign exchange reserves have saved about $ 6.93 billion (Rs 53137.82 crore).

Power generation also increased

The good thing is that there has been a decrease in import of coal in all non-regulated sectors except the power sector. Coal imports in these areas have decreased by 15.3 percent. However, the good thing is that the use of coal has increased by 2.87 percent compared to last year from April 2024 to February 2025. But there has been a decrease of 38.8 percent in the import of coal for blending by thermal power plant.

India is becoming self -sufficient in coal production

India is trying to reduce its dependence on coal imports and become self -sufficient in coal production. The government has also started many initiatives like commercial coal mining and mission cooking coal for this.

As a result, coal production increased by 5.45 between April 2024 to February 2025. The coal sector of India plays an important role in supporting its rapidly growing economy, in which coal works as a primary source of energy in many big sectors such as electricity, steel and cement.

Throwback: Shah Rukh Khan has worked in many great films in his Bollywood career. In the 90s, there were many films of Shah Rukh Khan who made him a star. One of them is a film in which Shah Rukh’s acting was highly praised. Shahrukh Khan’s coal came in 1997. In this film, Madhuri Dixit was seen in the lead role with Shahrukh. The film got good reviews but could not show anything special at the box office. There is a funny anecdote associated with this film. Shah Rukh Khan made a demand for a scene in the film, which was rejected by director Rakesh Roshan.

In the 90s, Shah Rukh Khan used to be the first choice of the makers. His films Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dar, Baazigar proved to be a hit. He was the top actor of that time. Many big producers were even writing scripts for Shah Rukh.

Shahrukh’s demand was canceled
According to the story on IMDB, Shah Rukh Khan got hurt during the shooting of the song in the veil. Due to which the shooting had to be stopped. Shah Rukh told Rakesh Roshan that why should we not stop the scene during that song and put a flash alert so that the audience can know that the song was hurt during the shooting. On hearing this idea, Rakesh Roshan refused this demand. Because it seems like Amitabh Bachchan’s coolness again.

Shahrukh’s idea of copying Amitabh Bachchan was rejected by Rakesh Roshan. After which there was also an estrangement between the two.

Sunny Deol was the first choice
Let me tell you that Rakesh Roshan’s first choice for coal film was Sunny Deol. Sunny felt that Rakesh would not be able to pay her fees to her. Because of this, he refused the film. After that the film was handed over to Shah Rukh Khan and he became a hero.
