India 2047 Conclave: Renowned economist Surjit Singh Bhalla will lead an important session at ABP Network’s ‘India @ 2047 Conclave’ on June 3, 2026. In this session he will share his views on dealing with economic challenges and deciding the direction of India’s future development. Surjit Bhalla, recognized as a leading figure in economic policy-making and financial markets, is currently the Chairman of Oxus Investments. It is a research and portfolio management firm based in New Delhi. Since its inception in 1998, Oxus has been actively managing investments in the Indian equity market. It was one of the first firms to get a portfolio management license in India.

Bhalla’s educational background is from some of the world’s leading institutions. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 1969. Subsequently, in 1972, he received a Master of Public Affairs degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Princeton University. Later, in 1977, he obtained a Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University. Completed.

Great career in global organizations

During his career, Bhalla has worked with many prestigious organizations, including the Rand Corporation, Brookings Institution and the World Bank. He has also taught at Delhi School of Economics and has played important roles as an economist, strategist, trader and portfolio manager.

His professional journey includes experience working with leading financial institutions such as Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, World Bank and Oxus Investments. Beyond the private sector, he has also made extensive contributions in the field of public policy, serving in advisory roles with the Government of India.

Bhalla has served as a member of the National Statistical Commission. Apart from this, he has also been associated with important committees related to ‘Capital Account Convertibility’ constituted by the Reserve Bank of India and the Government of India. He has also worked closely with market regulator SEBI on issues related to derivatives, secondary markets and portfolio management.

Widely respected for his contributions to economic thought, Bhalla has written several books on topics such as globalization, development, poverty, and economic growth. His works include ‘Imagine There Is No Country: Poverty, Inequality, and Growth in the Era of Globalization’ and ‘Second Among Equals’.

Apart from his academic and policy work, he has written hundreds of articles on economics, politics, financial markets and cricket. He is also a regular participant in global economic forums and has hosted a weekly television interview program focused on public affairs and current issues.

In an interview he said that India can play the role of a peacemaker in the Iran war. Speaking in British journalist Afshin Rattansi’s program New Order with Afshin Rattansi, Professor Jeffrey Sachs said that India definitely has the stature, the power and the dignity to say no to America’s illusions. He said, “In terms of population, India is four times larger than America and in terms of its civilizational history, it is 10 times or even older than that. In such a situation, India can clearly tell America to stop its misbehavior.

What was said about BRICS
He further said that my suggestion is that India should not do this work alone but collectively. Do it together with Russia, China, Brazil and other member countries of BRICS. I am saying this for some special reasons. First reason- This year India has the chairmanship of BRICS. I consider BRICS very important, influential and beneficial for the whole world. It is a strong foundation of global stability. Half the world’s population, half the world’s GDP and many major countries are its members.

Jeffrey Sachs said that we are not living in a world run by America. We are not in a world where America can threaten to push any other country into the Stone Age. We are citizens of a civilized world, based on international laws and the Charter of the United Nations. Therefore, the chairmanship of BRICS provides a special opportunity for India to play this role.

He further said that talking to or dealing with Trump is not a pleasant experience. I don’t have even the slightest doubt about this. Therefore, it would be better if this work is done in collaboration with our allied countries. I see India, China and Russia not just as co-members of BRICS, but as allies of each other.

Rejecting US claims of making concessions on India’s behalf, Jeffrey argued that New Delhi’s diverse global business partnerships have significantly reduced American influence. He has given the credit for reshaping the balance of power regarding this conversation to India’s strategic reach beyond its traditional allies.

‘India capable of protecting its interests’
According to Jeffrey, due to changes in trade, India has emerged stronger economically and diplomatically, which has further strengthened its position as an independent global power. He said that India is capable of resisting unilateral pressure while protecting its national interests.

The India-US trade deal is being called the Father of All Deals, a few days before this, on January 27, a trade agreement was signed between India and the European Union (EU). This deal was called Mother of All Deals. Donald Trump was the first to announce the deal with America and India has informed about reducing the tariff by 18 percent.
