The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a major climate warning for the world. The organization says that the sea water in the Pacific Ocean is becoming warmer than normal, due to which an El Niño situation is being created. This may affect the world’s temperature and rainfall patterns in the coming months. Due to this, weather related events like extreme heat, heavy rains, floods and drought may increase in many countries.

According to WMO, temperatures are likely to be above normal in almost all parts of the world from June to August 2026. According to the organization’s El Nino/La Nina update, there is an 80 percent chance of El Nino forming between June and August 2026. The probability of it continuing till at least November 2026 is said to be 90 percent or more. Although there remains some uncertainty about its peak strength and exact timing, most weather models suggest it will be at least moderate and possibly quite strong.

Also read: PAF Aircraft Crashed: PAF training aircraft crashes in Pakistan! Two killed, two pedestrians injured in accident

What did Antonio Guterres say about El Nino?

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in his video message that science clearly shows that El Nino is going to come with about 90 percent probability. He said that the world should consider this as a serious climate warning because the effect of El Nino on the already warming earth will make the situation more difficult. According to him, its effects will be more serious and it will affect beyond the borders of many countries. He said that the best solution is to take fast and effective steps to deal with climate change, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, promote renewable energy and strengthen the system of providing timely warnings to the people.

Statement by WMO Secretary General Celeste Saulo

WMO Secretary General Celeste Saulo said the world needs to prepare now for a possible strong El Nino. He said that due to this, incidents of both drought and heavy rains may increase in many areas. The risk of heatwave will also increase both on land and sea. They reminded that the 2023-24 El Niño was among the strongest El Niño events on record and played a significant role in the record global temperatures of 2024.

Sea surface temperature is continuously increasing
According to the WMO, sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern parts of the equatorial Pacific Ocean continued to rise during late April and May and approached the limits of El Nino. The water below the sea surface is also about 6 degrees Celsius warmer than normal, due to which the surface temperature is increasing further. For this reason the El Nino situation is developing rapidly. Along with this, the Southern Oscillation Index is also indicating the formation of El Nino.

Every El Nino is different – WMO

WMO said that El Nino and La Nina are two different phases of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). This is one of the most powerful natural climate patterns on Earth. During El Nino, the waters of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean become warmer than normal. It usually occurs once every two to seven years and can last for about nine to twelve months. It often develops between March and June and reaches its strongest between November and February. The greatest impact is usually visible the following year. However, every El Nino is different and its impact depends on its strength, timing and its relationship with other weather systems. Therefore, its impact is not the same in every country and every region. WMO also said that the term Super El Nino is not its official classification and the organization does not use it.

Flood situation may arise due to El Nino

According to WMO, due to El Nino, there may be more than normal rainfall and flood conditions in southern South America, parts of South America, Horn of Africa and Central Asia. There is a possibility of drought and below normal rainfall in Central America, Northern South America, Caribbean, Australia, Indonesia and some parts of Southern Asia.

sea storms will be affected

It can also have an impact on sea storms. During El Nino, storm activity may increase in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, while the likelihood of storm formation in the Atlantic Ocean may decrease. For this reason, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted a below normal hurricane season in the Atlantic region this year. WMO has also expressed concern for South Asia. According to the South Asian Climate Outlook Forum, monsoon rainfall is likely to be below normal in entire South Asia including India. At the same time, the Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum has also predicted below normal rainfall in its region. According to the Central America Climate Outlook Forum, there is a possibility of drier and hotter weather there.

WMO statement in Global Seasonal Climate Update

WMO has said in its Global Seasonal Climate Update that temperatures are expected to be above normal in almost all parts of the world during June, July and August. This may increase heat stress in many areas and drought conditions may develop rapidly in areas where rainfall is less. On the other hand, in areas where there is more rainfall, the risk of incidents like heavy rains and floods will increase. The organization says that timely weather forecasting and early warning systems are very important to save people’s lives, take right decisions in areas like farming, health, energy and water management and reduce economic losses. Therefore, governments and related agencies need to make preparations from now on.

Punjab School Timing Change: The Punjab state government has taken a big decision amid the continuously increasing heat and heat wave in Punjab including North India. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced that the timing of all government schools in Punjab will be changed from May 25, 2026. The government has taken this step keeping in mind the rising temperatures and the safety of people, especially children.

Giving information through social media, Chief Minister Bhagwat Mann said that from Monday 25th May, the timings of all classes in all government offices and government schools of the state will be from 7:30 am to 1:30 pm, this order will be applicable in the entire state.

Decision taken in view of heat and heat wave

The temperature in Punjab has been continuously increasing for the last several days. In many districts the mercury has reached close to 44 to 45 degrees Celsius, due to which normal life is being affected. A warning has been issued by the Meteorological Department regarding heat wave. In such a situation, the government has changed the timings of schools and government offices to provide relief to children and employees from the strong afternoon sun and hot winds. Experts say that being outside in the afternoon can affect the health of children, elderly and sick people. For this reason, the government has decided to conduct work and studies in the morning.

Some relief from rain and strong winds

On Friday morning, the weather suddenly changed in many districts of Punjab. There was light rain and strong winds in many areas including Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Pathankot. This provided some relief to people from the heat and humidity. However, the Meteorological Department says that this relief cannot last for long. On Thursday, a drop of about 0.9 degrees Celsius was recorded in the maximum temperature in Punjab. But despite this, Bathinda remained the hottest district in the state, where the temperature was recorded at 44.6 degrees Celsius. At the same time, the effect of hot winds and heat wave continued throughout the day in Chandigarh and Mohali.

Summer vacation announced in Chandigarh also

Amidst the increasing heat, Chandigarh administration has also announced summer holidays in schools. According to the administration, summer vacation will start in Chandigarh schools from May 25. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the safety of children. Also, an appeal has been made to the parents to avoid sending their children out in the hot sun.

Lucknow Summer Vacation: In view of the scorching heat and heatwave in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, the district administration has taken a big decision. The District Magistrate has declared summer holidays in the schools of all education boards from May 22, 2026. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the safety and health of children. The continuously increasing temperatures and hot winds have increased the problems of the people, especially for small children, it has become difficult to go out.

In the notice issued by the district administration, it is clearly stated that the Meteorological Department is continuously issuing warnings regarding heatwave, but some schools in the district are still open, which can have a negative impact on the health of the children. The administration has instructed all the officers to strictly follow the order. Besides, children have also been advised not to go out of the house during day time so that they can avoid strong hot winds.

Time table of schools changed from Delhi to UP

In view of the increasing impact of summer, many states have released the complete schedule of school holidays. It has been decided to keep schools closed in Delhi-NCR from 11 May to 30 June 2026. However, remedial classes are being held in the morning shift for classes 9th, 10th and 12th in the government schools of Delhi. Whereas in Uttar Pradesh, summer holidays have been declared from 20 May to 15 June. Schools will remain closed in Haryana from June 1 to June 30, in Rajasthan from May 17 to June 20 and in Bihar from June 1 to June 20. In view of the continuously increasing heat, parents are also supporting this decision.

Also read: Parent-Child Relationship: After scolding children, parents should not make this mistake even by mistake, the relationship of trust may break.

Holidays have already started in many states

The effect of heat is clearly visible in South India and eastern states also. Holidays have been declared in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh from 24 April to 11 June. In Chhattisgarh, schools are closed from April 20 to June 15, while in Odisha, holidays have started from April 27. In view of the scorching heat in many districts of West Bengal, holidays have been extended till May 31. The Meteorological Department is continuously advising people to remain alert. Doctors say that strong sunlight and heat wave can quickly affect children’s body, hence extra caution is very important at this time.

Return of El Nino may increase problems

Scientists believe that El Nino conditions may return again this year, although this has not been officially confirmed yet. If this happens then the temperature in the country may increase further. Along with this, there is also a possibility of increase in heat wave incidents and weak monsoon in many areas. This is the reason why governments and administrations seem to be alert than before. Keeping in mind the safety of children, the decision of school holidays has been taken so that they can be protected from the scorching heat and heat wave.

A place where there is silence on the streets after 10 in the morning. Where instead of working in the fields during the day, farmers are forced to plow under the light of LED lights at night. Where workers are ready to give up up to 40 percent of their wages to escape the heat. Where electrical transformers become so hot that they have to be kept cool by continuously pouring water on them. This is not the script of a horror movie, but the reality of Banda situated on the semi-arid plateau of Bundelkhand in Uttar Pradesh. The maximum temperature recorded here on May 21, 2026 was 48 degrees Celsius. This is not a trivial figure. Banda has become the hottest city in the world for the third consecutive day. Let us understand why there is such severe heat in Banda and what effect is it having on life?

Banda: This season’s ‘hotspot’

This is not the first time that Banda has made headlines. The city has repeatedly emerged as the hottest destination in the world and the country throughout the season:

27 April 2026: The temperature reached 47.6 degrees Celsius, which was the hottest April day since 1951. On this day, Banda remained at number one in the list of 8,212 weather stations around the world.

17 April 2026: With 45.4 degrees Celsius it became the hottest place in Asia.

17 May 2026: Once again the hottest city in Asia with 46.4 degrees Celsius.

19 May 2026: The mercury reached 48.2 degrees Celsius and Banda remained the hottest city in the world for the third consecutive day.

20 May 2026: The temperature was 48 degrees Celsius and it remained the hottest city in India for the fourth consecutive day.

On May 19, 2026, 40 cities of Uttar Pradesh alone were included in the list of 100 hottest places in the world, but Banda was at the top among them. The thing to note is that Banda has left behind even the traditionally hot cities of Rajasthan like Churu and Jaisalmer. On May 21, temperatures higher than Banda were recorded only in Egypt’s Aswan at 49.4 degrees Celsius and Saudi Arabia’s Arafat at 48.4 degrees Celsius. Khajuraho stood fourth in the list of highest temperature in the world with 47.4 degrees Celsius.

Why is it so hot in Banda?

It’s not just the weather. There are many man-made reasons behind this, which have gradually transformed Banda into a furnace. Experts call it the ‘vicious cycle of heat’:

Indiscriminate Sand Mining: This is the biggest and most dangerous reason for the heat of Banda. Every day 2,000 to 3,000 trucks of sand and morang are illegally mined in the Ken River basin. Padmashree awarded water conservation expert Uma Shankar Pandey says that excessive mining has completely destroyed the natural cooling system of the river. The river sand used to absorb water and keep the ground cool, it has now vanished. Instead, the rocky surfaces are absorbing heat and releasing it at night.

Rapidly disappearing forests: According to a study by Banda Agricultural University, the district has lost about one-sixth of its dense forest area between 1991-92 and 2021-22. Open forests have also decreased at approximately the same pace. The result is that today only 3 percent of the area of the district is covered with greenery, which is one of the lowest figures in Uttar Pradesh.

Drying Water Source: Rivers like Ken and Baghain are continuously shrinking. Professor of Geology Department of Lucknow University. According to Dhruv Sen Singh, depletion of water bodies, lack of moisture and increase in sandy surfaces have turned Banda into a ‘heat island’.

Geographical structure: This rocky and stony area of Bundelkhand absorbs heat throughout the day. The problem is that even before the night has completely cooled down, the next scorching morning begins. On top of that, the hot westerly winds coming from the Thar Desert of Rajasthan make it even hotter.

What effect is this scorching heat having on life?

This scorching heat of Banda has completely disrupted people’s lives:

Silence in the day: After 10 in the morning the streets, shops and markets of the city become completely empty. A shopkeeper in Atarra town told a news website that he has made almost no sales since April.

Farming at night: Farmers are forced to do farming at night under the light of LED floodlights, because it has become impossible to work in the fields during the day.

Migration of workers: According to contractors, many workers are willing to give up up to 40 percent of their wages to avoid working between 10 am and 5 pm.

Collapsed power system: Due to excessive load, more than 1,379 transformers of 44 substations are failing repeatedly. Electricity department employees are continuously pouring water to keep them cool.

The exodus started early: Migration from villages to cities has started much earlier than usual this year.

Banda is known for its role in the War of Independence of 1857, but today it is more in news for its scorching heat and chronic water shortage. This justifies the concerns of Prahlad Valmiki, a resident of Bhaddu village, who says, ‘The time has come that serious attention should be paid to this. Otherwise Banda will become unlivable.

Heat Wave Alert: The heat is now becoming severe across the country. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning saying that in the coming days, a severe heat wave is going to hit many parts of North and Central India including Delhi. Due to continuously rising temperatures, crores of people may have to face scorching heat.

According to the Meteorological Department, heat wave conditions may persist in many parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh and Konkan-Goa till May 22.

Mercury can reach 45 degrees in Delhi

IMD has said that the temperature of Delhi may increase by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in the next three days. There is a possibility of partly cloudy sky, thunderstorms and strong winds at a speed of 20 to 30 kilometers per hour in the capital on Sunday. At some places the wind speed can reach 40 kilometers per hour.

The maximum temperature on Sunday is expected to be around 44 degrees Celsius. After this, as soon as the sky clears, the temperature may reach 45 degrees Celsius in the next week. There is less possibility of getting relief from hot winds even at night.

Temperature will increase rapidly in North and Central India

According to the Meteorological Department, the temperature is increasing rapidly in North and Central India. The temperature in the western Himalayan regions may also increase by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius. Skymet Weather President Mahesh Palawat said that instead of eastern winds, now north-western winds are blowing, which are coming from central Pakistan and Rajasthan. These winds are extremely hot and dry, due to which the temperature will increase further in the coming days and the possibility of heatwave has become stronger.

Heatwave alert will continue in these states

According to IMD, heat wave may continue in Rajasthan from 17 to 23 May. At the same time, heat wave will continue in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi from 18 to 23 May. A severe heatwave warning has been issued in some parts of Uttar Pradesh between May 19 and 23. Apart from this, heatwave conditions may prevail in Telangana from 17th to 21st May. There is a possibility of severe heat in some areas of Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh.

Relief from rain in Northeast and South India

While North India will be scorching with scorching heat, there is a possibility of rain and thundershowers in the northeastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Strong winds and light to moderate rain are also expected in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh of South India. Light rain may also occur in some parts of Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. It has rained in Tamil Nadu.

What is heatwave?

According to IMD, when the temperature in an area increases much more than normal, then it is declared a heatwave. In the plains, which includes Delhi, heatwave conditions are considered when the temperature is 40 degrees Celsius or more and is recorded 4.5 to 6.4 degrees above normal.

At the same time, if the temperature reaches more than 6.4 degrees above normal, then it is considered a severe heatwave. Apart from this, if the temperature reaches 45 degrees Celsius or more, a heatwave is declared, no matter what the difference is from normal temperature. Experts say that this is not just normal heat but a dangerous situation, which can prove fatal for children, elderly and people working outside.

Be careful about health

Experts have advised people to be cautious. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. People have been advised to stay at home or in the shade from 12 noon to 4 pm, drink as much water as possible and wear light cotton clothes. It has been asked to use umbrella, hat or towel while going out. Along with this, an appeal has been made to take special care of the elderly, children and people working outside.
