Hinduphobia: In order to prevent increasing crimes against Hindus in the US and other European countries, the Bill of formally recognized by Hindu phobia and anti -Hindu discrimination has been introduced in the Parliament of Georgia. What will happen when the bill is passed?

If this bill introduced in Georgia assembly, if it passes and takes the shape of the law, the penal code of Georgia will be revised. If this happens, law enforcement agencies will be able to take action keeping in mind Hindu phobia. Explain that in this bill, keeping an abusive view against the Hindu community, having hostile feelings and defines crimes. This bill also instructs to include Hindu phobia in Georgia’s anti -discrimination law. Let me tell you, before this, a resolution condemning Hindu phobia was passed in Georgia Assembly. What is ‘Hindu phobia’?

The Bill introduced in the Parliament of Georgia defines in Hindu phobia, a crime against Hindus, having a sense of enmity towards them, making racial remarks, having derogatory views. Legal action can be taken against the person who does so on making the law. Let me tell you, Hindu phobia refers to the derogatory attitude against Hindus and to have hostile feelings against them on the basis of religion, caste, color. According to the data, around 2.5 million Hindus live in the United States, of which about 40 thousand Hindus live in Georgia.

Freedom of expression: The University of Houston of Houston has given clarification about the controversy arising on its curriculum called ‘Live Hindu Religion’. The university said that it gives importance to academic freedom and teachers are given complete freedom to consider complex and sensitive topics. This statement came when a student objected to the content of the syllabus and called it ‘Hinduphobic’.

Following the complaint of the student, the Dean of the University and the Director of the Department of Religious Studies reviewed it and discussed the subject with the teacher. The university clarified that this course is based on the principles of religious studies in which specific terminology is used to understand different religions and their traditions. The university said that words like ‘Fundamentalism’ are used to explain the historical and social processes of all religions and not for criticism of any religion.

Cleaning of Professor Ulleri

Professor Aaron Michael Ulleri, who taught this course, also reacted to the controversy. He said that his aim is to explain different forms of Hinduism and not limit it in any one definition. He insisted that his syllabus widely covers the historical and social aspects of Hinduism, which includes a journey from its origin to the present.

Professor clarification on Hinduism and Hindutva

Professor Ulleri clarified that Hinduism incorporates many different traditions and beliefs. He said that the word ‘Hindu’ was not found in Indian Sanskrit literature in ancient times but it developed as a geographical and cultural identity. He also said that ‘Hindutva’ emerged as a political ideology in 1922 and its historical aspects are impartially taught in the curriculum.
