Hidden Cholesterol Marker: Due to changing lifestyle, we are facing all kinds of heart related problems. In such a situation, when it comes to heart health, people usually pay attention to cholesterol figures like LDL, HDL and triglyceride. Most people believe that if their cholesterol report is normal then their heart is completely safe. But in recent years, many such cases have come to light, where people suffered heart attacks at a young age, even though there was no major abnormality in their normal cholesterol report. This is the reason why now doctors are not only paying attention to LDL, HDL and triglycerides, but are also advising to check some hidden risks which are not visible in normal tests. Experts say that sometimes such problems are present inside the body which are not visible in the reports, but can have a serious impact on heart health.

What is Lp(a), which is said to be the hidden danger?

According to doctors, Lipoprotein (a) or Lp (a) is a special type of cholesterol particle, which looks like LDL i.e. bad cholesterol, but has an additional protein attached to it. This is the reason why it can accelerate the process of fat accumulation in blood vessels. The biggest thing is that Lp(a) is not tested in the general lipid profile test. In such a situation, a person’s cholesterol report may be normal, but his heart may still be at risk.

Also read: Best Drinks for Liver Health: These five drinks are very useful in fatty liver, as soon as you drink them, the liver will get a lot of coolness.

Heart attack cases are increasing

Doctors in India are seeing a worrying trend. Many people whose cholesterol report is normal are also becoming victims of heart attacks at the age of 30 to 40. The National Institute of Health believes that increased Lp(a) levels due to genetic reasons may be an important reason behind this. This factor is mostly influenced by genetics, so diet or exercise has limited effect on it.

Cases are increasing rapidly in India

According to experts, cases of premature heart disease are increasing rapidly in India. It has been said in many reports that a large part of the total deaths in the country are related to heart diseases. It is a matter of concern that heart attacks in many patients are happening 10 to 15 years earlier than in western countries. Genetic predisposition, diabetes, high blood pressure, inactive lifestyle and hidden lipid markers like Lp(a) can increase this risk.

Doctors say that people whose family has had cases of heart attack, stroke or heart disease at a young age, should get the Lp(a) test done at least once. Apart from this, people with high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and poor lifestyle should also take heart checkup seriously. Although it is not considered easy to reduce Lp(a) directly, but with knowledge of it, other risks such as LDL cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar can be better controlled.

How Gene Therapy Reduces LDL Cholesterol: Scientist has raised a big hope for crores of people suffering from heart diseases and bad cholesterol. Scientists claim that such a treatment is now being developed in which bad cholesterol can remain under control for a long time by taking gene therapy just once. If its results are successful in the upcoming larger trials, then in future many patients may not need to take cholesterol medicines throughout their life.

Does it really work?

Scientist has done research on a new gene therapy Verv-102, the results of which have been published in a reputed medical journal. In this study, it was found that this therapy was successful in reducing the bad LDL cholesterol present in the body by 62 percent. This research was done on those patients who had high cholesterol problem since birth or had increased risk of heart disease at an early age. A total of 35 patients were included in the initial trial. Scientists observed that in patients who were given higher doses, LDL cholesterol levels decreased by an average of 78 mg/dl. The most important thing was that in many patients its effect persisted for a year.

Also read- Stress And Heart Health: Due to constant stress, BP is becoming high at the age of 20-30, know why office stress is becoming a silent killer?

Very important for heart diseases

Dr. Ambuj Roy, Cardiology Professor, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, has described this study as very important in the field of treatment of heart diseases. He says that this research proves that through in-vivo base editing of PCSK9 gene, LDL cholesterol can be reduced in the body for a long time. If its long-term safety is proved to be completely safe in the future, then it can bring a big change in the treatment of heart diseases.

How does gene therapy work in the body?

According to the scientist, this therapy permanently switches off the gene named PCSK9 present in the liver. This gene plays an important role in controlling cholesterol levels in the body, for this advanced base editing technology has been used, which is considered a more accurate and modern method of gene editing.

How is bad cholesterol dangerous for us?

Worldwide, high LDL cholesterol is counted among the biggest causes of heart attack, stroke and blockage. Many patients are not completely safe despite taking medicines. In such a situation, scientists hope that this new therapy can open the way for one-time treatment in future. It is a matter of relief that no major security threat was revealed in the initial trials. The research-related pharmaceutical company has said that it will start the second phase clinical trials of Verv-102 this year.

Whenever we go to bed during the winter season, we cover our entire body from mouth to feet with a quilt or blanket. Also, close the room completely and turn on the heater, so that any kind of cold does not reach you. But if your feet remain cold even after being covered in a quilt and the heater running, then it is a matter of concern.

If you are wearing warm socks on your feet and still your feet are cold, then it can be a sign of many diseases, ignoring which can prove dangerous. Through this article we will tell you what problems you may have to face.

weak blood circulation

If your feet remain cold even after wearing a quilt or warm socks in winter, then the reason could be blood circulation. When blood does not reach the veins of the legs properly, heat is not generated in that area. For this reason the feet remain cool. If the blood circulation in the legs is not good, then there may be complaints like numbness, pain and heaviness, which are dangerous for the body.

increase in bad cholesterol

Due to increase in the amount of bad cholesterol (LDL) in the blood, feet may remain cold despite protection from cold. This happens because cholesterol starts accumulating in the veins, due to which blood circulation slows down. The most dangerous thing is that information about this is not available quickly. When the veins become excessively blocked, symptoms of the disease appear. If bad cholesterol has increased in the body, then the risk of heart related diseases also increases.

effect of diabetes

The veins in the legs of patients suffering from diabetes become weak. Due to this the blood vessels become hard and narrow. These veins shrink further in cold weather. When adequate blood circulation does not reach the feet, the problem of cold feet begins.

Hemoglobin deficiency and anemia

If the amount of hemoglobin in the blood decreases, the risk of diseases like anemia increases. This can be dangerous for health. When there is lack of blood in the body, the body is not able to produce adequate amount of heat. Due to anemia, the body remains cold and problems like weakness, numbness in hands and legs can also occur.

In today’s busy life, people often eat such food which instead of providing necessary nutrition to our body, causes harm, especially to the heart, high cholesterol, unbalanced diet, stress and less physical activity together become the major causes of heart diseases. In such a situation, many people resort to medicines, while many people want to reduce cholesterol through natural methods.

Keeping this need in mind, scientists developed a special type of diet pattern. Which is portfolio diet. This is not a normal diet, but a combination of foods that together reduce your LDL i.e. bad cholesterol in a natural way. So today let us tell you what this portfolio diet is and how it works and why doctors consider it very beneficial for heart health.
What is the Portfolio Diet?

The Portfolio Diet is a plant-based eating plan created by Dr. David Jenkins of the University of Toronto. Its aim is to reduce bad LDL cholesterol in the body just by eating daily without any medicines. Four main food groups are included in this diet, which individually reduce cholesterol, but when eaten together, they show the same effect as drugs like statins.

Which 4 essential food groups are included in this diet?

1. Plant Sterols – These are plant elements that prevent cholesterol from being absorbed in the intestines. These sterol-rich margarines, spreads, sterol-rich yogurt drinks, and orange juice

2. Gel Type Fiber – This fiber becomes gel-like in the intestine and helps in removing cholesterol from the body. Oats, barley, apples, pears, berries, beans, pulses, okra and psyllium

3. Soy Protein –It helps the liver to activate the receptors that remove LDL more. Veggie Burgers with Tofu, Soy Milk, Edamame, Soy

4. Nuts – Monounsaturated fats present in dry fruits increase HDL and reduce LDL. Almonds, walnuts and pistachios.

How does this diet work in the body?

Portfolio diet reduces cholesterol in many ways. Plant sterols can reduce cholesterol absorption by about 50 percent. Viscous fiber binds cholesterol and removes it from the body. Soy protein activates LDL removal receptors in the liver. Nuts increase HDL and reduce LDL. The mixture of these four has an effect on the body like a natural medicine.

Why doctors consider it very beneficial for heart health

Studies have found that this diet can reduce LDL by 13 percent to 30 percent. Those who followed the diet for six months reported a 13.8 percent LDL reduction, which is similar to statin drugs. Those who adopted it for a long time, it reduced triglycerides, reduced inflammation and improved blood pressure. In a study of 2 lakh people followed for 30 years, those who had the best portfolio diet score had a 14 percent lower risk of heart disease and stroke. This diet was found to reduce the risk of heart attack by 17 percent in post-menopausal women. A 2025 study of 439 patients found that this diet effectively reduced cholesterol and heart risk for 10 years.

A recent study regarding obesity has made shocking revelations. This study has challenged the connection between obesity and heart diseases. It is generally believed that obesity increases the risk of heart disease and high cholesterol, but a recent research has revealed that a gene named MC4R, which is responsible for increasing obesity, also protects against heart diseases.

Research has found that in people who have a rare variant of the MC4R gene, the level of LDL i.e. bad cholesterol reduces and the risk of heart disease also reduces. According to scientists, this gene is found in about one percent of obese people and five percent of obese children. According to this research, this gene mutation may occur in one out of every 300 people in Britain.

Unique connection between obesity and heart disease

Actually, the purpose of this research was to understand how some people remain safe from heart diseases despite being obese. In this study conducted under the metabolism experts of the University of Cambridge, it has been found that the MC4R gene produces a protein in our brain that controls appetite. When this gene works properly, the person eats less. But when there is a disturbance in it, the person feels more hungry and weight increases rapidly. According to researchers, this gene causes obesity, but people with its rare variant have significantly lower levels of bad cholesterol, which reduces the risk of heart disease.

Investigation conducted on thousands of people

In the study, research was done on the genes of 7,719 children and 124 adults, in whom obesity was due to the disorder of MC4R gene. Apart from this, they were compared with 3.36 lakh people of UK Bio Bank. The results of which revealed that people with MC4R deficiency had better blood pressure and cholesterol profiles and their heart health was found to be better than that of the general population.

What does the report say?

The results of this research show that the MC4R gene controls the fat metabolism of the body through the brain. In people in whom this gene does not function properly, obesity increases, but the level of triglyceride and bad cholesterol remains low. Regarding this research, researchers say that by understanding the functioning of MC4R gene, new medicines can be made for the treatment of heart diseases and high cholesterol.
