MBBS Seats Matrix 2026: The National Medical Commission in the country has released the matrix of MBBS seats for the academic level 2026-27, in which 9911 new seats have been approved. With this, the total number of MBBS seats in the country has increased to a record 1,36,939. However, the interesting thing is that despite the number of government medical colleges in the country being more than that of private colleges, MBBS seats are more than that of private institutes.

According to the seat matrix released by NMC, a total of 1,27,028 MBBS seats have been renewed this year, while 9,911 new seats have been added. These seats have become available through new medical colleges and increasing seats in already running colleges. This increase has come at a time when more than 22 lakh students appear for the NEET UG exam every year, but the number of MBBS seats seems very less in comparison.

Why are there more seats in government colleges, yet more seats in private ones?

According to NMC data, there are currently 823 medical colleges in the country. These include 441 government and 382 private colleges, which means that government institutions are ahead in terms of the number of colleges. Despite this, if we talk about seats, there are a total of 63,996 MBBS seats in government colleges, whereas 73,643 seats are available in private medical colleges, that is, there are more than 10 thousand MBBS seats in private colleges as compared to government institutions. This is the reason why despite the large number of government colleges, the share of private colleges in the total MBBS seats appears to be higher. Out of 9,911 seats increased this year, private colleges have got 7,800 seats, whereas only 2,111 seats have been increased in government colleges, that is, about 79 percent share in the additional seats approved this time was for private medical colleges.

How did the seats increase so rapidly?

According to MK Ramesh, resident member of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board of NMC, this increase has been possible due to the changes made in the Graduate Medical Education Regulation 2023. Earlier, a medical college could apply for increasing MBBS seats only after the completion of its first batch. After the implementation of the new rules, colleges can now apply for increasing seats from the second year onwards if they meet the prescribed standards. Due to this, the process of seat expansion became much faster than before.

How many seats increased in new colleges and how many in old colleges?

According to NMC, out of 9,911 additional MBBS seats approved this year, 2400 seats are attached to 25 new medical colleges. These include 7 government and 18 private medical colleges. The remaining 7,511 seats have been added through increasing seats in the already running medical colleges. Apart from this, if we talk about states, Uttar Pradesh has the maximum number of 88 medical colleges, out of which 49 are government colleges, which is the highest in the country. A total of 14,000 MBBS seats are available in the state. There are a total of 75 medical colleges in Karnataka, but it has the highest number of MBBS seats in the country with 15,395 MBBS seats. There are 51 private medical colleges in the state, which is the highest in the entire country. Apart from this, Maharashtra has 86 medical colleges and 13,099 seats while Tamil Nadu has 78 medical colleges and 13,999 MBBS seats. There are 51 medical colleges in Rajasthan, where a total of 80 medical seats are available.

NMC’s strict warning to the college

NMC has also warned medical colleges not to admit students more than the prescribed capacity. The Commission said that regulatory and punitive action will be taken under the NMC Act 2019 if admission is given more than the sanctioned seats. Also, all major medical colleges have been asked to verify their sanctioned seats before the start of counseling and to inform the Medical Assessment and Rating Board in case of any discrepancy.

MBBS Seats in India: The number of MBBS seats is most important for students who dream of studying medicine in the country. Every year admission is given in government and medical colleges through NEET UG. In such a situation, the question remains in the minds of many students that which state has the maximum number of seats available and which states have the highest number of medical colleges.

Recently, the National Medical Commission has released the official seat matrix of MBBS seats across the country for the educational level 2026-27 and this time a significant increase in the number of seats has also been seen. In such a situation, let us tell you today which state of the country has the maximum number of MBBS seats.

How many total seats did NMC increase?

According to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board of the National Medical Commission, this year admission will be given to a total of 1,36,939 MBBS seats across the country. Of these, 1,27,028 seats were already approved, while this year 9,911 new seats have been approved. Apart from this, 25 new medical colleges have also been approved, in which about 2400 seats are also part of this increase. Now MBBS will be taught in a total of 823 medical colleges across the country.

Which state has maximum MBBS seats?

According to NMC data, Karnataka ranks first in terms of maximum MBBS seats. Maximum seats are available here in government and medical colleges together. After this comes Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Telangana. Due to the large number of medical colleges in these states, there are more opportunities for seats for students. Whereas among these states, maximum 1300 new MBBS seats have been added in Karnataka, due to which the total number of seats here increased to 15,395. With this, Karnataka once again became the country’s largest medical education hub and the state with the highest number of MBBS seats.

Apart from this, about 900 seats have been added in Rajasthan, taking the total number of seats to 8,080. With the addition of about 825 new seats in West Bengal, the total number has reached 7,200, while in Telangana the total number has reached 10,250 with the addition of about 810 new seats. About 800 new seats have also been added in Uttar Pradesh, taking the total number of MBBS seats in the state to 14,000. Apart from this, a significant increase in seats has also been recorded in Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.

Seats increased in both government and private colleges

This time the number of seats in both government and private medical colleges has been increased. Now a total of 63,996 seats will be available in 441 medical government medical colleges of the country, in which 2,111 new seats have been added this year. There will be a total of 73,643 seats in 382 private medical colleges. Among these, the maximum increase of 7,800 seats has been done this year.

Affordable MBBS Colleges India: Every year lakhs of students across the country take the NEET exam with the dream of becoming a doctor. However, due to limited seats and competition in government medical colleges, not every candidate gets the desired college. In such a situation, the biggest concern of many students and parents is MBBS fees, because the cost of the entire course in a private medical college can reach from lakhs to crores of rupees.

If the college is selected with correct information and wisdom, then studying MBBS is possible even at low fees. In such a situation, let us tell you today how to get medical college admission even with low marks in NEET and which are the MBBS institutes with the lowest fees in the country.

Big difference in fees of government and private colleges

MBBS fees in India vary according to the type of college. The fees for the entire course in a government medical college can range from a few thousand rupees to about Rs 6 lakh. Whereas in private medical colleges, this expenditure can reach from Rs 40 lakh to Rs 2 crore or more. The name of AIIMS comes at the top among the institutes with lowest fees. Here the total fees for the entire five and a half year MBBS course is around thousands of rupees. This is the reason why every year a large number of students aim to get admission in AIIMS.

Country’s lowest fee MBBS college

Government Medical College, Amritsar

Even if your NEET score has not reached the cut-off of the top medical institute, there are many government medical colleges where admission is given at lower ranks as per the trend of previous years. Government Medical College, Amritsar is also included in these colleges, in the trend of last few years, admission here has been done at the closing rank of around 19,000. MBBS fees here are also quite affordable as per government college.

Government Medical College, Latur

In the Government Medical College Latur located in Maharashtra, around 20,000 seats have been available till the closing rank. The fees here are also very less as compared to other institutes.

Shahid Hasan Khan Mewati Government Medical College, Haryana

In this medical college of Haryana also, students with lower ranks have got admission till the last round. Apart from this, the fees of this college is also said to be much less than the expensive MBBS colleges.

Late Baliram Kashyap Memorial Government Medical College, Jagdalpur

Located in Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, this college is among the favorite colleges of the students due to low fees and government seats. If you get low marks in NEET then you can easily get admission here also.

Government Medical College Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh

Students can also do MBBS with low fees in the Government Medical College located in Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh. The closing rank here is said to be around 26,148.

Agartala Government Medical College

In Tripura’s Agartala Government Medical College also, a trend has been seen that students with lower ranks get seats till the last round.

low fee private colleges

If seats are not available in government colleges, there are many private medical colleges too, where fees are less as compared to other private institutes. Shadan Institute of Medical Sciences, Ganga Reddy is also included in these colleges. MBBS fees here are considered low. Apart from this, SIMSRC Bengaluru is also included in the list, which is counted among the private medical colleges with low fees. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Medical College and Hospital, New Delhi is also included in this list. The total fees for MBBS here is much lower than many private colleges.

NEET Re Exam 2026: NEET UG 2026 re-exam was held today i.e. on 21st June amidst very tight security. More than 22 lakh candidates took the re-examination at 5,440 centers in 551 cities of the country and 14 international places. On the day of NEET UG Exam 2026, such cases have come to light from many cities of the country, where delay of a few minutes or a few seconds has become costly for the students. Among lakhs of candidates, many students who had reached the examination center with the dream of becoming doctors could not go inside after the gate was closed.

Pictures emerging from Hyderabad, Bhopal, Jaipur and Bengaluru have shown the strict rules of the examination and the helplessness of the students. For the exam starting at 2:00 pm, NTA had allowed entry till 1:30 pm. After this, no candidate was allowed to enter the examination centre, due to this strict rule many candidates were deprived of taking the exam.

No entry due to delay due to traffic jam in Hyderabad

Four medical candidates reached the examination center at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Centre, Hyderabad, but were late by a few minutes in the stipulated time. According to the information, there was a huge traffic jam around the center due to which the students could not reach the gate on time. The students were stopped outside the examination centre. It was told that since the gate was closed, the security personnel did not allow them to go inside. The students and their families tried hard, but citing examination rules, they were sent back. Police and central administration said that once the gate is closed, no one can be allowed to enter. Keeping in mind the fairness and security of the examination, it is mandatory to follow the time limit.

1 minute delay proved costly in Bhopal

A similar case has come to light in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. A student reached Subhash Excellence School examination center less than 1 minute late than the scheduled time, but she was not allowed to enter the examination hall. The student and his father made many requests to the deployed soldiers. He told that he had reached another center earlier by mistake, due to which there was a delay of a few minutes. Despite this, citing rules, he was not allowed to go inside. The student kept crying for a long time outside the centre, but did not get any relief and had to return.

Girl student kept crying outside the gate in Jaipur

In Jaipur too, a student’s dream of becoming a doctor was shattered due to a delay of a few minutes. A student named Divyanshi, who reached Netaji Subhash Government Higher Secondary School Center located at Subhash Chowk, did not get entry. The student said that she had reached the entrance at 1:30 pm and the gate had not even struck 1:31, yet the gate was closed. The student and his father stood outside the center for a long time pleading with the authorities, demanding entry citing traffic jams. But the policemen refused entry citing rules. After crying and requesting for a long time, the student had to return disappointed.

Didn’t get relief even after the accident

Another case also came to light in Bhopal itself, where a student met with an accident on the way to reach the examination centre. According to family members, first the student was taken to the hospital for treatment, after which he reached the examination center, but by then the gate was closed. The family explained the entire situation to the officials but they were not given entry citing the beginning of the examination and the end of the deadline.

NEET Re-Exam 2026: The re-exam of the country’s biggest medical entrance examination NEET-UG 2026 is being conducted today on June 21, 2026, in which more than 22.79 lakh students are participating. After the paper leak controversy, it has become a big challenge for NTA to conduct the examination in a completely fair and safe manner. For this reason, before the examination, security arrangements were checked by conducting mock drills across the country. The teams of police, administration and NTA are busy ensuring that no incidents like cheating, fraud or paper leak take place during the examination.

A total of 1.29 lakh MBBS seats are available in medical colleges across the country, due to which the competition is very tough. According to statistics, on an average 18 students are vying for an MBBS seat, making the path to becoming a doctor more challenging than before. In such a situation, let us know how difficult it is to become a doctor.

Examination will be held in 565 cities, 22.79 lakh students will give the exam.

A total of more than 22.79 lakh students across the country have registered for NEET-UG 2026 re-exam. These include about 13.33 lakh girl students and 9.47 lakh boys. About 22.05 lakh candidates appeared in the first examination. This examination is being conducted in a total of 565 cities including 551 cities in India and 14 cities abroad. This examination, conducted on such a large scale, is considered one of the biggest medical admission examinations in the country.

Also read – NTA ready for NEET re-exam, deployed 6700 observers, 40 to 50 policemen at every center

How difficult is it to become a doctor?

According to career counseling experts, at present there are a total of 823 medical colleges in the country, where 1,29,603 MBBS seats are available. Of these, there are 63,160 seats in 450 government medical colleges, while 66,443 seats are available in 373 private and deemed medical colleges. However, most of the students try to get admission in government medical colleges due to low fees, due to which the competition is very high there. The competition for MBBS seats in NEET-UG 2026 is very tough.

If we look at the total of more than 22.79 lakh registered candidates and 1.29 lakh MBBS seats, on an average around 18 students are competing for one seat. At the same time, due to limited seats in government medical colleges and low fees, government colleges are the first choice of most of the students. This is the reason why competition for government MBBS seats becomes even more difficult, where on an average 36 candidates are vying for one seat.

MBBS studies prove to be very expensive for lakhs of students who dream of becoming doctors. High fees and other expenses of private medical colleges sometimes become a big challenge for financially weak students. However, the central and state governments run many scholarship schemes to help such students, through which the financial burden of studies can be reduced to a great extent.

Under government scholarship, eligible students are provided financial assistance for tuition fees, living expenses and other educational needs. This assistance is determined on the basis of the student’s educational qualification, social class and family income. In many schemes, students can get assistance ranging from Rs 20 thousand to Rs 1 lakh or more every year.

PM-USP Scholarship Scheme

Prime Minister Higher Education Promotion (PM-USP) Scheme is included in the major schemes of the Central Government. Under this scheme, students who have excelled in class 12th are provided financial assistance for higher education. The benefit of this scholarship is available to those students who have secured 80 percent or more marks in 12th and whose family annual income is less than Rs 4.5 lakh. Eligible students can be given assistance up to Rs 20 thousand annually.

Also read – Government is providing financial assistance for MBA studies, know which scholarships you can avail.

Central Sector Scholarship Scheme

Central Sector Scholarship Scheme is also an important scheme for meritorious students. Under this, financial assistance is given to eligible students studying in colleges and universities. To avail the benefits of this scheme, the educational record of the student should be good and the annual income of the family should be within the prescribed limit. Scholarship up to Rs 20 thousand is provided to selected students every year.

Post Matric Scholarship

Post Matric Scholarship Scheme is operated for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Other Backward Class (OBC) students. This scheme is run by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. Under this scheme, tuition fees, examination fees and other educational expenses of the students are covered. Apart from this, maintenance allowance is also given to the students, so that they can meet other expenses incurred during their studies.

Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme

Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme is run exclusively for Ex-Servicemen and dependent children and widows of Indian Coast Guard personnel. Under this scheme, eligible students are given a scholarship of Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000 every month. Its objective is to encourage children from military families for higher education.

The Supreme Court has given big relief to Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (HIMSR). The court has given permission to continue the admission process for MBBS and Post Graduate Medical seats for the academic session 2026-27. After this decision of the court, the way has now been cleared for admission to 150 MBBS and 49 post graduate medical seats in the institute.

Justice B.V. A bench of Justice Nagarathna and Justice Ujjwal Bhuyan said in its order that Jamia Hamdard (Deemed to be University) will be deemed to have given consent for ‘deemed affiliation’ in favor of HIMSR. But the court has also said that this arrangement will be subject to the final decision of the ongoing dispute between the two branches of the Hamdard family.

What is the whole matter?

This controversy has come to light regarding the management and administrative control of HIMSR. In fact, many administrative differences had arisen after the operation of the institutions associated with the Hamdard group was divided between different branches of the family. Meanwhile, Jamia Hamdard had withdrawn the affiliation consent given to HIMSR citing University Grants Commission (UGC) rules and some other objections.

This decision started affecting the admission process of medical colleges. The institute also faced problems in accessing the National Medical Commission (NMC) portal and other administrative permissions.

The case reached the Supreme Court

Let us tell you that the matter reached the Supreme Court in January 2026, when the counseling process for admission to postgraduate medical courses was about to begin. At that time, keeping in mind the interests of the students, the court had directed NMC to include 49 post graduate seats of HIMSR in the counseling process so that the seats do not remain vacant.

Also read – Good news for PG students, government is giving scholarship of 15K every month, know how to apply?

After this, on February 11, 2026, the Supreme Court, while recognizing the admission of 49 PG students, had accepted that the consent of affiliation exists in favor of the institute. However, this arrangement was also dependent on the final decision of the case.

Relief also given for 2026-27 session

At the same time, now the Supreme Court has implemented the same system for the academic year 2026-27. The court said that consent of affiliation will be deemed to be in favor of HIMSR, which will enable the institute to complete the admission process to its 150 MBBS and 49 post graduate seats.

The court also directed that enrollment numbers be issued to 49 post graduate students already enrolled. Besides, instructions have also been given to restore the institute’s access to the NMC portal and accept the necessary academic documents.

The dream of youth in India is to do MBBS and their parents also keep motivating their children to go into this field. This year, about 23 lakh NEET forms were submitted. Children want to pass this exam and get the best college, but the high college fees troubles both the children and the parents.

Student Why do you go abroad?

Many times, despite scoring good marks, students are not able to become doctors simply because they do not have the ability to pay lakhs of rupees of fees. For this reason, many students turn to foreign countries, where they get the opportunity to study medicine at lower fees.

But you will be surprised to know that there are some states in India too, where you can complete MBBS studies at very low fees. Let us know about such states and medical colleges, where MBBS fees are very low.

In many government institutions of Telangana like Gandhi Medical College, Kakatiya Medical College, Osmania Medical College and Siddipet Medical College, the annual fee is only around ₹ 10,000, to get admission here, students have to score at least 650 marks.

Some other states, where fees are less

At this time, a very important information has come to light for medical colleges across the country. If they want to continue their admission to MBBS seats in the academic session 2026-27, they will have to do one thing by May 30, 2026. This instruction has been issued directly by the National Medical Commission (NMC). It has been said in clear words that no time will be given to any college after the fixed date.

Actually, NMC has asked all the medical colleges and institutions to submit the “Annual Disclosure Report” on the NMC portal. Submission of this report is now not just a formality but has become a necessary condition for renewal of MBBS seats.

Why is this report important?

According to NMC rules, under Regulation 4 of MSMER 2023, every medical college has to submit its annual information to the commission. This includes college education, staff, facilities, infrastructure, status of students and other important information. On the basis of this report, NMC decides whether the college should be allowed MBBS seats in the next academic session or not.

On which colleges is this rule applicable?

This instruction is applicable to all those medical colleges and institutions which have a valid LoP from NMC for running MBBS course. This means that the colleges which are already teaching MBBS will also have to submit this report.

Submission will have to be done through NMC portal only.

The report can be submitted only on the official portal of NMC. Information sent offline or through any other means will not be valid. The nodal officer of each college has already been given a username and password. If any college has not yet registered its AEBAS (Attendance System) with NMC, then it will not be able to login to the portal.

User manual also available

For the convenience of the colleges, NMC has also uploaded a detailed “User Manual” on the portal, which explains step-by-step how to fill the report. The Commission has clearly said that before filling the report, read this manual carefully.

Once submitted, no changes

NMC has also warned that once the report is submitted, no changes can be made in it. Therefore, whatever information is filled, it should be completely correct and match the information given to all the NMC boards. The Commission has also said that if needed, this information can also be made public.

Fees will also have to be paid online

Along with submitting the report, medical colleges will also have to deposit a fee of Rs 3,54,000 (including 18% GST) online. This payment will be made only through the payment gateway of the portal. Payment made through any other method will not be accepted.

What is the last date?

NMC has said in strict words that no report will be accepted after May 30, 2026. No college will get the benefit of extending the deadline.

The National Medical Commission has given strict instructions to medical colleges, institutes and universities across the country that MBBS fees should be charged only for the fixed period of study. Charging fees for a period of one year of internship will be considered against the rules.

Many complaints reached the Commission that some medical colleges are charging fees from students in the name of full 5 or 5.5 year courses. To this they also add a mandatory internship of one year, during which there is no classroom study. This order has been issued to stop this.

According to the rules, the educational duration of MBBS course is 4.5 years i.e. 54 months. This is followed by a one-year compulsory rotating medical internship (CRMI). This is the time for training, not for studying. Therefore, it is not right to include this period in the fees.

The Commission has clearly said that where there is no education, there are no fees. The students should be charged the same fees that they have to pay for studies, labs, classrooms and teaching facilities. During internship, students undergo hospital training, learning to work with patients, but it is not part of classroom-based education. It has also been said in the notice that charging more fees than the stipulated academic time is like taking money without studying. The fee structure should be clear, understandable and according to the facilities.

Strict action will be taken

NMC has written in its order that all medical colleges should follow this rule and correct their fee structure immediately. If any college charges additional fees in the name of internship, strict action will be taken against it.

This decision has brought relief to thousands of students who spend huge amount for medical studies. Many families fulfill their dream of making their children doctors with the help of their savings and loans. In such a situation, the additional fees of one year became a big problem for them.

The Commission has also said that fees should always be reasonable and should be decided according to the education and facilities provided to the students. Transparency is very important, so that students and parents can clearly understand what they are paying fees for.

Commission gave strict instructions

Now all medical colleges will have to change their rules. They have to ensure that the fees are limited to only 4.5 years of studies. No educational fees should be charged from students during internship.

The Commission has also warned that if any institution does not follow this order, legal and administrative action will be taken against it. That is, this time the instructions have not come just as advice, but in the form of a strict order.
