Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reach Gothenburg on Sunday in the third phase of his 5-nation tour. During this visit, India and Sweden will discuss issues like business, innovation, AI and emerging new technologies. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this 2-day visit to be held on 17-18 May is being held on the invitation of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. Officials said that this visit will provide an opportunity to review India’s relations with the European Union through Sweden.

Earlier in 2018, PM Modi had visited Sweden for the first India-Nordic summit. This time, the Prime Minister is expected to hold bilateral talks with Kristersen that will cover the entire gamut of bilateral relations, with a special focus on promoting trade and investment ties.

What topics will be discussed
The External Affairs Ministry said the discussions will include topics of cooperation in AI, emerging new technologies, startups, defence, space and action on climate change and people-to-people ties. The two leaders are also expected to address the European Industry Roundtable, a major European business forum, along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

There can be talk on Iran-America conflict
According to HT report, officials said that after the India-Europe Free Trade Agreement, the importance of this visit has increased even more, because New Delhi wants to further strengthen economic relations with Europe. The economic implications of the Iran-US conflict are also expected to be discussed during the discussions in Sweden.

trade between india and sweden
Trade and investment are likely to be the major themes as bilateral trade between India and Sweden is expected to reach $7.75 billion in 2025. Sweden’s foreign direct investment in India has also reached $2.825 billion between 2000 and 2025. New Delhi is also trying to adopt Sweden’s technology, which is considered the strongest in Europe. Sweden leads Europe in the number of unicorns per capita.

While addressing the Indian community in The Hague, Netherlands, Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned the world about the energy crisis. PM Modi said that continuous wars and global instability can reverse decades of development and push a large population back into poverty. During this, PM Modi also told the achievements of India to the world.

If the situation does not get better, everything can end: PM Modi

PM Modi said, ‘Today there are many big challenges before humanity. First Corona came, then wars started and now there is an energy crisis. This decade is becoming a decade of disasters for the world. If this situation does not change soon, the achievements of the past decades may be lost. A large part of the world’s population may again fall into the trap of poverty.

Referring to his country’s achievements, PM Modi said, ‘In the past years, India has laid optical fiber 11 times more than the distance of the Moon from the Earth. A decade ago we used to import mobile phones, today India is the second largest mobile manufacturer. Apart from this, today’s India has another identity. Today’s India is an innovation power. Today our digital public infrastructure is discussed all over the world. This is a big proof of the innovation of Indians.

India’s youth wants to touch the sky: PM Modi

PM Modi said, ‘Today our India is dreaming big. Today the country is saying – we do not just want transformation, we want the best, we want the fastest. Therefore, when Aspirations are Unlimited in India, Efforts are also becoming Limitless. Today the youth of India wants to touch the sky. Today’s India is going through a period of unprecedented change. You must have seen recently that India organized the world’s largest and most successful AI summit. Before that, India had also organized a successful summit of G-20.

PM Modi said, ‘Startup has become the mood of the youth of India today. 12 years ago there were less than 500 startups in the country. Today this number has increased to more than two lakhs. In the world of startups, there were only four unicorns in India in 2014, today there are around 125 unicorns here. About 44 thousand more new startups have been registered in 2025 alone. Today our startups are doing great work in AI, defense and space sectors.

Today India is an innovation power: PM Modi

PM Modi said, ‘This culture of research and innovation is becoming bigger with time. More than lakhs of patents have been filed in India last year. India is also taking big steps in the semiconductor sector in chip making. At present 12 semiconductor plants are working in India. Production has also started in two of these plants. Now the chip will also be designed in India, made in India. Today India is an innovation power. Our digital public infrastructure is talked about all over the world today. This is a big proof of the innovation of Indians.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands at the Royal Palace on Saturday (16 May 2026). After this, PM Modi told that the copper plates of the Chola dynasty of the 11th century (Chola Era) will now be brought back to India from the Netherlands. Regarding this historic decision, the Prime Minister said that this is a very happy moment for every Indian.

Copper plates of Chola dynasty will be brought to India

While sharing the picture on PM Modi X, he wrote, ‘A very happy moment for every Indian! Copper plates (copper plates) of the Chola dynasty will be brought back to India from the Netherlands. In the presence of Prime Minister Rob Jetten, I participated in this ceremony. These Chola Copper Plates are a set of total 24 plates, of which 21 are large and 3 small plates. Articles are written on them in Tamil language, one of the most beautiful languages in the world. These documents date back to the time of the great king Rajendra Chola I, who formalized an oral promise made by his father, King Rajaraja I.’

PM Modi wrote, ‘This also shows the greatness of the Cholas. We are extremely proud of the Indian Cholas, their culture and their maritime power. I express my gratitude to the Government of the Netherlands and especially to the University of Leiden, where this copper plate was preserved since the middle of the 19th century. These copper plates remained with the Dutch administration for more than a hundred years.

Netherlands and India working together: PM Modi

PM Modi said that India and the Netherlands are working together to build a reliable, transparent and future-ready supply chain. He said, ‘From energy security to water conservation, Netherlands and India are working together. Our cooperation on green hydrogen is very important. The historic trade agreement between India and the European Union will further strengthen the partnership between India and the Netherlands.

Referring to Netherlands being famous for tulips, PM Modi said that India is famous for lotus. He said, ‘Both tulip and lotus teach us that whether their roots are in water or earth, both have beauty and strength. India and Netherlands can coordinate on the international platform and work together to achieve global projects. He also said that many civilizations disappeared with time, but the diverse culture of India is still present in the hearts of the people here.

There is news of heavy firing in the Senate of the Philippines. The sound of several bullets was heard in the Senate building here. Here, Senator Ronald Dela Rosa, an aide of the former President, tried to avoid his arrest during the trial of the ICC i.e. International Criminal Court. Here there was a shootout between soldiers in a corridor of the Senate in Pasay. News agency AP reported that late Wednesday night, Senate officials were trying to arrest a senator. He is accused of crimes against humanity. ICC is looking for this. This incident happened during this time.

Journalists present at the spot informed that at least five gunshots were heard just minutes after the soldiers carrying rifles and wearing protective armor entered the Senate building. Della Rosa has appealed to the army to stop attempts to arrest him and extradite him to the Netherlands. ICC has its headquarters in Hague city of Netherlands. Here he will have to face charges of committing crimes against humanity. He is present inside this building since Monday.

Meanwhile, Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano said in a live video on social media that we have been attacked. However, he did not give much information about this. Alan is an associate of Della Rosa. Another aide, Senator Robin Padilla, is seen heading upstairs. After reaching there, he appealed to the journalists to vacate the place. Rosa has appealed to his old classmates to oppose the efforts of the government of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to hand him over to foreigners. Many videos of this incident are also viral on social media.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going on an important strategic visit to five countries from 15 to 20 May 2026, which includes the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as well as four major European countries. This visit is taking place at a time when the world is going through a period of geopolitical turmoil and economic uncertainty. This 5-day visit will start from May 15 to May 20 and during this the Prime Minister will visit five countries. Now the question arises that why is PM Modi visiting in the environment of ongoing tension in the Middle East and what is its strategy?

PM Modi will start his tour from UAE…

1. United Arab Emirates (UAE) – 15 May: PM Modi’s journey will start from Abu Dhabi. That means PM Modi will go there on the very first day. There he will meet President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed. These are old and trusted friends of our country. The most important thing is energy security, meaning the need for oil and gas. With the kind of news that is coming these days, this thing becomes even more important. Apart from this, UAE is also a big investor in our country and more than 45 lakh Indians live there, so there will be talk about their welfare also. UAE is India’s third largest trading partner and a major investor.

2. Netherlands- 15 to 17 May: After UAE, PM Modi will go to Netherlands. This is his second visit there after 2017. The special thing here is that the focus of the conversation will be on completely new technologies and ideas. For example, water management (how they manage water, because they are world masters in this), semiconductor (which is the brain of electronic things), green hydrogen and new inventions. PM Modi will also meet the wedding family there along with the Prime Minister there. During this period, many agreements related to India-Netherlands strategic partnership are expected to be signed.

3. Sweden- 17 to 18 May: Now it’s Sweden’s turn. Here PM Modi will talk to Prime Minister Ulf Kristersen. The issue of discussion here will be Artificial Intelligence i.e. AI, Defence, Space and how to promote new startups of our country there. Apart from this, there will also be a lot of talk on the green revolution that saves the environment. Both the Prime Ministers will also address ‘European Round Table for Industry’, a major business forum, along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. There will also be a big business forum here in which people from big companies of Europe will come.

4. Norway- 18 to 19 May: This is the most special. No Indian Prime Minister has visited Norway in 43 years. Now after such a long time, PM Modi is going there. The big thing is that he will attend a big summit named ‘India-Nordic’, in which the leaders of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland will be together. There will also be a separate meeting with the Prime Minister there. The agenda of the talks is green energy, working together in the Arctic region and blue economy related to marine resources. So, in a way, this is a tour that opens up completely new paths and new possibilities.

5. Italy- 19 to 20 May: Here PM Modi will meet Prime Minister Georgia Meloni and the President. This meeting is also important because both the leaders had met some time ago in the G7 conference. Here he will review a ‘Joint Strategic Action Plan’ decided in the previous meetings. This plan includes things like defence, clean energy and trade. Meaning, there is a preparation to take the old things forward and give them momentum.

What is the biggest objective of PM Modi’s entire visit?

This is not just a tour of going here and there, shaking hands and taking photos. There is complete planning and many big objectives behind this:

Removing energy concerns: In today’s situation, the biggest fear is that there may be some interruption in the supply of oil and gas. So by talking to countries like UAE and Norway, India wants to ensure the supply of its needs.

Bringing new business and investment: A major Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has just been signed between India and Europe. This visit will help in speedy implementation and finalizing the new deal.

Taking help from future technology: Water management technology from Netherlands, AI and startup understanding from Sweden. Not to borrow all this, but to work together so that we also benefit.

Making our strong place in the world: This entire journey sends a big message that no matter how much turmoil there is in the world, India is a strong and reliable country that chooses its own path. He can work together with everyone in Europe and Gulf countries.

So overall, this is a huge strategic bet by which India is simultaneously trying to strengthen its energy security, new technology, trade and its power in the world.

Several major countries of Europe and Japan have issued a joint statement on Thursday (March 19, 2026) on the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran amid the ongoing conflict and tension in the Middle East. These countries condemned the attacks being carried out by Iran on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz and called on it to immediately stop its actions.

Along with Japan, Britain (UK), France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands said in a joint statement that they will join the necessary efforts to ensure safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz and take steps to stabilize energy markets.

What did the European countries say in the joint statement?

In a joint statement issued from the office of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the leaders of all the countries involved said that we request Iran to immediately stop all efforts to block the path of commercial shipping vessels through its attacks, threats, laying of mines, drone and missile attacks.

He said that Iran’s attack on merchant ships, oil-gas bases and civilian infrastructure in the Gulf is very serious and such interference in international shipping by closing Hormuz and creating problems in global energy supply is a threat to international peace, security and the entire world. In their statement, these countries have also talked about keeping the energy supply stable, releasing oil reserves if needed and helping the affected countries.

Freedom of navigation fundamental principle of international law: UK

The leaders also said that Iran has entered the 20th day of the war and the Strait of Hormuz is currently effectively closed. Freedom of navigation is a fundamental principle of international law. The impact of Iran’s actions will be felt in all parts of the world, especially among those who are most vulnerable.

It is clear from this statement that there is increasing concern about Iran’s retaliatory actions in response to the attacks by America and Israel. Along with this, oil and gas facilities have been damaged due to attacks from both sides, due to which the prices of oil and gas are increasing.

The Netherlands team concluded its T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a 17-run defeat against India on Wednesday. Netherlands captain Scott Edwards praised the Indian batsmen and said that the host team has tremendous firepower till the lower order.

After scoring 193 runs losing 6 wickets at Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday, Team India won the match by restricting Netherlands to the score of 176/7.

Aryan Dutt took 2 wickets for just 19 runs in 4 overs against India. Praising Aryan, the captain said, “We started very well. Full credit goes to Aryan, he has been performing brilliantly for the last few years. He gave a tough challenge to the Indian batsmen. Throughout the match we felt that we are in the competition.”

The Indian team could score only 118 runs after losing 4 wickets in 15 overs of play. After this, Shivam Dubey and Hardik Pandya batted stormily and took India to the score of 193. The captain of Netherlands has admitted that Indian batsmen have tremendous potential.

He said, “We know that they (India) have tremendous firepower till the lower order. In such a situation, it was really brilliant to keep them under control for 14-15 overs. Maybe some chances were missed, there was lack of execution at some places and such players make you pay for that. We knew that we had to take wickets continuously. They had four wickets fallen in the 16th over, which means they had wickets left, and in the end they scored runs quickly in a few overs.”

Netherlands played 4 matches in the T20 World Cup 2026, in which with 1 win this team stood fourth in the points table of Group A. The captain said, “Coming to India, you always learn a lot because the conditions are different, the grounds are smaller, the wickets are very flat, the crowd and the atmosphere are also different. As a team, we were good in many phases, but missed important moments. As a team, we pride ourselves on playing well in big moments. We played very good cricket, but there were some moments where we missed. When you play only four matches, it is very important to capitalize on those moments.”
