Assam Chief Ministers: Election results have come in Assam and once again Himanta Biswa Sharma’s government is being formed there. Himanta is going to become CM for the second consecutive time. There have been 15 Chief Ministers in Assam so far, out of which 7 CMs have emerged from a university in Assam. Let us know which is this university, which has given 7 Chief Ministers to Assam?

After all, which university is that?

In the politics of Assam, the university that has produced 7 Chief Ministers is Guwahati’s Cotton University (formerly Cotton College). It would not be wrong to call this university the center of Assam politics. It was established in 1901 even before independence. At that time people had to go to Kolkata for higher education. In such a situation, the then Chief Commissioner Sir Henry Stedman Cotton laid its foundation, and it was officially recognized as a university by Himanta Biswa Sharma in 2017.

Which Chief Ministers have been students of this university?

The then Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sharma became the Chief Minister of Assam in 2021 and he was the 7th Chief Minister to study from this university, before him also 6 other Chief Ministers had been students of this university. Some of their names are as follows:

Gopinath Bordoloi: He was the Chief Minister from 26 January 1950 to 06 August 1950.

Mahendra Chaudhary: He was the Chief Minister from 11 November 1970 to 30 January 1972.

Sarat Chandra Sinha: He was the Chief Minister from 31 January 1972 to 12 March 1978.

Jogendra Nath Hazarika: He was the Chief Minister from 09 September 1979 to 11 December 1979.

Hiteshwar Saikia: From 27 February 1983 to 23 December 1985 and again from 30 June 1991 to 22 April 1996.

Bhumidhar Burman: 22 April 1996 to 14 May 1996.

Himanta Biswa Sharma: From 10 May 2021 till now.

Role of Cotton College in the beginning of politics of Himanta Biswa Sharma

Cotton College (now Cotton University) played a big role in the beginning of politics of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma. From here he obtained Bachelor’s (BA) degree in Political Science in 1990 and Master’s (MA) degree in the same subject in 1992. He was also very active in student politics here and was the General Secretary of the Student Union of Cotton College thrice between 1988 and 1992.

Mariani Assembly seat of Assam has once again become one of the most talked about and politically important seats of the state. This time in the assembly elections, an interesting political tussle of legacy versus change is being seen. Here the political hold established for decades is facing a new challenge.

The influence of the Kurmi family has remained here for three decades. It started in the year 1991, when Rupam Kurmi won for the first time and represented this area politically till 2004. She was a senior leader of Congress. Apart from this, she had also been a cabinet minister in the government of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

He died on 4 February 2004. After this his son carried forward his political legacy. Rupjyoti Kurmi won this seat since 2006. He contested as a Congress candidate in 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2021. In June 2021, he left Congress and joined BJP. After this, he proved his support base by winning the by-election held in October 2021. Barring a short interval from 2004 to 2006, the Mariani seat has been almost completely under the control of the Kurmi family since 1991, making it one of the strongest political seats in Assam.

The equation changed with the entry of a new face
This time there has been a new twist in the elections. The alliance of Congress and Raijor Dal has made Dr. Gyanashree Bora a joint candidate, who is contesting the elections for the first time. Former teacher Dr. Bora is presenting herself as a candidate working on grassroots issues. He has clearly said that his main aim will be to strongly raise the problems of the people of Mariani in the Assembly and ensure their solution.

Main issues of the election?
Dr. Bora’s election campaign focuses on several important local issues. These include issues like the Assam-Nagaland border dispute (which affects people in the border areas), lack of clean drinking water, poor roads and infrastructure, increasing unemployment among the youth. His decision to leave a permanent teaching career and enter politics is also being presented among the public as a symbol of dedication and change.

Power of Roopjyoti Kurmi
On the other hand, Rupjyoti Kurmi is contesting this election with many strong parties. These include long political experience, strong grassroots network, organized structure of BJP, record of development work and public relations. His winning the election despite changing parties in 2021 shows that his personal support base is very strong.

Decisive turn in Mariani’s politics
Political analysts believe that this 2026 election is not just a normal contest but a turning point for Mariani’s politics. It is a contest between heritage, experience and continuity (Rupjyoti Kurmi) versus change, new thinking and issue-based politics (Dr. Gyanashree Bora). This election will decide whether voters maintain faith in the old and established leadership or move in a new direction.

What is the opinion of experts on the entire election?
On this, experts say that the strong history of the Kurmi family and the organizational strength of the BJP give an edge to Rupjyoti Kurmi, but the anti-incumbency wave and the attraction of a new face can make the contest tough. The challenge for Dr Bora will be to convert public discontent into votes, especially among the youth and first-time voters. The challenge before the Kurmis is to face the demand for change while maintaining their support. As the election campaign is gaining momentum, Mariani stands at an important political juncture. This contest is not only going to be high-voltage and close, but its outcome may also have an impact on the broader political scenario. Now all eyes are on Mariani’s voters—will they choose experience and continuity or give way to change and a new voice? This decision will decide the next chapter of this historic seat.

Political turmoil is in full swing in the state regarding the assembly elections to be held in Assam. Before the elections, Congress demonstrated a strong show of strength on Monday (March 23, 2026) in Jorhat district of the state. Congress candidate from Jorhat assembly constituency and state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi filed his nomination papers. During the nomination, more than 12 thousand supporters, workers and local people were present with Gogoi.

The entire city echoed with the rally of thousands of people carrying Congress flags and sloganeering, which gave a clear indication of the party’s strong support base and organizational strength in Upper Assam. During this time, Congress candidate from Teok assembly constituency Pallabi Gogoi and candidate from Titabar Pran Kurmi also filed their nomination papers. The presence of the three leaders together strongly demonstrated the unity of the Congress and its allies.

Gaurav Gogoi’s sharp attack on BJP government

Talking to journalists after the nomination, Congress candidate and party state president Gaurav Gogoi targeted the ruling BJP government. He said, ‘The atmosphere of politics in Assam has now become dirty and full of hatred. The people of Assam are now fed up with this situation and feel the need for a big cleanliness campaign.

He said, ‘This cleanliness campaign should start from politics itself. The aim of the opposition alliance is to remove the image of BJP and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from the minds of the people.

Pallabi Gogoi expressed gratitude and confidence

Tiok candidate Pallabi Gogoi thanked the public after the nomination and expressed confidence about her victory. He said, ‘By the grace of God, I have filed my nomination today. I am getting full support from the people of Teok. I have also prayed for the victory of dynamic leader Gaurav Gogoi.

Pran Kurmi also filled the form

Whereas Congress candidate from Titabar seat Pran Kurmi also formally filed his nomination and presented his claim in the election field. This has further strengthened the strategy of Congress in this area.

Election campaign with a spiritual beginning

Before nomination, Gaurav Gogoi started the day in a spiritual atmosphere. He took blessings by paying obeisance at a Gurudwara in the morning. After this, he also reached the famous Macharhat Namghar of Jorhat, where he offered prayers and prayed for the peace, prosperity and happiness of the people of the state. During this, he met the local people and described their blessings as his biggest strength.

Tough election contest ahead

After the completion of the nomination process and huge public support, the electoral contest is going to intensify in Jorhat, Teok and Titabar. Congress along with its allies seems fully prepared to give a tough challenge to BJP.

The seat sharing formula between NDA in Assam has almost been decided. According to sources, BJP alone can contest on 89 seats in the upcoming assembly elections. Apart from this, Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) is likely to get 26 seats. At the same time, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) can be given 11 seats.

This alliance formula of NDA covers a total of 126 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly. Sources said that the final decision can be formally announced in a few days. This formula has almost been decided after the ongoing meetings and discussions of NDA parties for the last few days. BJP wants to maintain its strength in Assam and contest as many seats as possible while AGP and BPF are being given seats in their traditional strength areas.
