There has been a big change in the number of students studying in government and private schools in the country. According to the UDISE 2025-26 report released by the Ministry of Education, the number of students in government schools has decreased rapidly in the last two years. On the other hand, the number of students studying in private schools has increased. These figures of the report show that now a large number of parents are enrolling their children in private schools.

86 lakh students of government schools decreased in two years

According to the UDISE 2025-26 report of the Ministry of Education, there has been a decrease of about 86 lakh in the number of students studying in government schools between the academic session 2023-24 to 2025-26. This change is considered important for the school education system of the country. The decrease in the number of students on such a large scale is an indication that the trend of admission in government schools has decreased compared to earlier.

More than 88 lakh new students joined private schools

It has also been told in the report that during the same period, more than 88 lakh new students were enrolled in private recognized schools without government aid. That is, at the time when the number of students in government schools decreased, at the same time a large number of new students joined private schools. It is clear from this that many families are now preferring private schools for the education of their children.

What is UDISE report?

UDISE i.e. Unified District Information System for Education is a big data system connected to all the schools of the country. Every year, the number of schools, enrollment of students, information about teachers, school facilities and many other important data related to education are included in it. On the basis of this report, the government assesses the status of the education system and makes further plans.

Also read – JNVST 2027: Class 6 admission starts in Navodaya Vidyalaya, apply till 31st July; Know who can apply?

Why is the admission trend changing?

The report does not mention any single reason for the decline in the number of students from government schools. However, education experts believe that many parents are turning to private schools because of better education, English medium, modern facilities, digital classes, better results and additional activities. At the same time, reasons like merger of government schools in many states, low student numbers and change in population can also affect the figures.

Why is this report important for the government

After the release of UDISE 2025-26 report, it is believed that the central and state governments will analyze these data and can start new schemes to strengthen government schools. Many big steps can be taken in the coming time to improve the education system, provide good facilities to the students and increase people’s trust in government schools. Education experts say that it is most important to have quality education available in both government and private schools, so that every child can get equal opportunity to build a better future.

Government School Report: Government schools used to be the first choice of millions of families, but now the picture is changing rapidly. The new report of the Ministry of Education shows that a large number of parents are getting their children admitted in private schools instead of government schools. In the last two years, the names of lakhs of children were removed from government schools, while the number of students in private schools has continuously increased. This change is not limited to just one state, but has been seen in many big states of the country. So let us know in which states of the country the condition of government schools is the worst.

What is the new report of the Education Ministry?

Unified District Information System for Education Plus is the official digital database of the Ministry of Education. Through this, data related to admission of students, number of teachers, number of schools and basic facilities is collected in schools across the country. According to the report, in the year 2025-26, a total of 24.72 crore students were registered in schools from primary to secondary level across the country. At the same time, in 2023-24 this number was around 24.80 crores. There was not much difference in the total admissions, but a big change was seen in the figures of government and private schools.

Shortage of 86 lakh students in government schools

According to the report, 12.75 crore students were studying in government schools in 2023-24. In the year 2025-26 this number decreased to 11.89 crores. A decrease of about 86 lakh students was recorded in two years. With this, the number of students in private schools increased from 9 crore to 9.89 crore. About 88 lakh new students took admission in private schools.

In which states of the country is the condition of government schools the worst?

1. Most students study in government schools in Bihar, but here too a decline was recorded in admissions. There were 1.71 crore students in the year 2023-24, which reduced to 1.66 crore in 2025-26.

2. The number of students in government schools in Uttar Pradesh decreased from 1.48 crore to 1.41 crore. There was a reduction of 7.07 lakh students in two years.

3. The number of students in Madhya Pradesh decreased from 81.28 lakh to 79.70 lakh.

4. Admission in government schools in Rajasthan decreased from 77.82 lakh to 74.49 lakh. There was a reduction of about 3.32 lakh students here.

Also read – Salary Word Origin: Sometimes ‘salt’ was found in salary instead of money! Know how your salary got the name ‘Salary’?

5. There was a decline in admission in government schools in Maharashtra also. The number of students here decreased from 51.08 lakh to about 49.79 lakh.

6. West Bengal was the state where admissions in government schools increased. The number of students here increased from 1.49 crore to 1.54 crore. Here about 4.61 lakh new students joined government schools.

What was the change in the number of government and private schools?

In the year 2025-26, the number of government schools across the country decreased to 10,05,245, whereas in 2023-24 it was 10,13,322. The number of private schools has increased. In the year 2023-24, there were about 3.39 lakh private schools in the country, which increased to more than 3.40 lakh in 2025-26. The number of private schools has increased in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan, while there has been a slight decline in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal.

There is a relief news for thousands of parents living in Delhi who want to send their children to a good private school but cannot pay the fees due to financial reasons. Like every year, this year too the Delhi government is going to start the process of admission under EWS quota in nursery, KG and class 1 in private schools. It is believed that the application dates will be announced soon.

In such a situation, it is very important for the parents to understand the complete information from now on and keep the necessary documents ready, so that there is no problem at the time of application. This step of the Delhi government brings relief to those families who due to financial constraints are unable to afford the education of their children in expensive private schools. Through the EWS quota, such children get a chance to get good education. Selection under this scheme is done in a completely transparent manner, so that no one is discriminated against.

How will be the process of EWS admission?

The entire process of admission under EWS quota will be online. Parents will have to apply by visiting the official website of Delhi Directorate of Education (DoE). First of all you have to do online registration by going to the section related to EWS/DG/Freeship Admissions on the website.

After completion of registration, the application form will be filled by logging in. In this, necessary information related to the child and parents will have to be given and the required documents will have to be uploaded. Since the application process is completely digital, parents will not need to visit any school.

For which classes will the applications be made?

Under this scheme, applications are accepted for admission in Nursery, KG (LKG/UKG) and Class 1 in private schools. Application dates usually fall in the month of February or March. Therefore, parents are advised to keep checking the website of the Directorate of Education regularly, so that they do not miss any important updates.

Documents required for application

Some important documents are required while applying for EWS admission. It is very important to keep them prepared in advance. Such as birth certificate of the child, identity card of the parents or guardian (Aadhaar card, voter ID etc.), residence certificate of Delhi, income certificate, passport size photographs of the child and parents. If the child falls in the disabled category (CWSN), then disability certificate will also be required for him.
