According to the UDISE 2025-26 report released by the Ministry of Education, the number of students in government schools has decreased rapidly in the last two years. On the other hand, the number of students studying in private schools has increased. These figures of the report show that now a large number of parents are enrolling their children in private schools.
86 lakh students of government schools decreased in two years
According to the UDISE 2025-26 report of the Ministry of Education, there has been a decrease of about 86 lakh in the number of students studying in government schools between the academic session 2023-24 to 2025-26. This change is considered important for the school education system of the country. The decrease in the number of students on such a large scale is an indication that the trend of admission in government schools has decreased compared to earlier.
More than 88 lakh new students joined private schools
It has also been told in the report that during the same period, more than 88 lakh new students were enrolled in private recognized schools without government aid. That is, at the time when the number of students in government schools decreased, at the same time a large number of new students joined private schools. It is clear from this that many families are now preferring private schools for the education of their children.
What is UDISE report?
UDISE i.e. Unified District Information System for Education is a big data system connected to all the schools of the country. Every year, the number of schools, enrollment of students, information about teachers, school facilities and many other important data related to education are included in it. On the basis of this report, the government assesses the status of the education system and makes further plans.

Why is the admission trend changing?
The report does not mention any single reason for the decline in the number of students from government schools. However, education experts believe that many parents are turning to private schools because of better education, English medium, modern facilities, digital classes, better results and additional activities. At the same time, reasons like merger of government schools in many states, low student numbers and change in population can also affect the figures.
Why is this report important for the government
After the release of UDISE 2025-26 report, it is believed that the central and state governments will analyze these data and can start new schemes to strengthen government schools. Many big steps can be taken in the coming time to improve the education system, provide good facilities to the students and increase people’s trust in government schools. Education experts say that it is most important to have quality education available in both government and private schools, so that every child can get equal opportunity to build a better future.
