Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was once one of the most powerful political parties in Uttar Pradesh but now it is going through its worst phase. The situation is such that in the year 2026, BSP will be completely out of the country’s Parliament for the first time. BSP does not have a single member in the Lok Sabha and now the tenure of the only MP in the Rajya Sabha, Ramji Gautam, is also about to end.

Ten MPs from Uttar Pradesh are retiring from Rajya Sabha in November 2026. Of these, eight Bharatiya Janata Party and one Rajya Sabha MP each from SP and BSP will retire. Among these, the names of BJP MPs Brijlal, Seema Dwivedi, Dinesh Sharma, Neeraj Shekhar, Chandraprabha, Hardeep Singh Puri, Arun Singh and BL Verma are. At the same time, the tenure of SP’s Ram Gopal Yadav and BSP’s Ramji Gautam is also ending.

Let us tell you that BSP was founded by Kanshi Ram on 16 April 1984. Within a few years of its establishment, the voice of BSP started resonating from Parliament to Legislative Assemblies. But now this will be the first time when BSP’s vote in Parliament, the temple of democracy in the country, will be reduced to zero.

BSP’s voice will be lost in Parliament

Ramji Gautam is the only BSP MP left in Rajya Sabha. Who went to elections in the year 2019 with the support of BJP. After six years, his tenure as MP will end in November next year. After which, along with the Lok Sabha, BSP’s position in the Rajya Sabha will also become zero.

In such a situation, this will be the first time after 36 years that there will not be a single member speaking for BSP from both the Houses of Parliament. Looking at the equation of Rajya Sabha elections, it is not possible for BSP to get even a single seat in next year’s elections. BSP has only one MLA. Whereas according to the equations, support of 37 MLAs is necessary for one Rajya Sabha seat.

BSP is going through its worst phase

Bahujan Samaj Party was formed in the year 1984, after which BSP progressed rapidly and became the largest political party of Dalits. BSP not only became strong as a regional party but its stature in national politics had also become quite strong. In 2009, BSP won 21 Lok Sabha seats with 6.17% vote share and emerged as the third largest party at the national level.

In 2014, amid the Narendra Modi wave, BSP did not win a single Lok Sabha seat but the party secured 4.19% votes. In 2019, BSP-SP contested the elections in alliance and BSP won ten seats. But after a few days BSP broke the alliance.

By 2024, BSP continued to decline and the party’s vote share fell to 2.07% and could not win even a single seat. At the same time, the situation of BSP in UP Assembly is also very bad. In 2022, only one MLA of BSP could win the election. Last year, BSP also came to a position of zero in the Legislative Council because the tenure of the party’s only MLC Bhim Rao Ambedkar also ended.

Next year (on 9 April 2026), five Rajya Sabha seats of Bihar quota are becoming vacant. Currently, JDU has two seats, RJD has two and Upendra Kushwaha has one seat. There is definitely a few months time for the seats to become vacant but the rhetoric for this has started. A statement by Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi shows a picture of tension in the NDA.

This time (2025) NDA has won 202 seats in the assembly elections. Accordingly, it has been decided that this time no one from RJD will be able to go to Rajya Sabha. Two seats will remain with JDU and two will go to BJP. In such a situation, the question regarding the remaining seat is whether it will go to Chirag Paswan’s account or will it be given to Jitan Ram Manjhi?

Where did the controversy regarding a seat start?

In fact, Jitan Ram Manjhi said in his speech during a function in Gayaji last Sunday that we had asked for two seats in the Lok Sabha and got one seat, now we are not getting even a single seat in the Rajya Sabha. Dhirendra Kumar, who understands the politics of Bihar and is a political expert, says that Jitan Ram Manjhi is already doing politics of pressure. According to the current discussion, Chirag Paswan seems to have the upper hand. Talking about numbers, Chirag Paswan has 19 MLAs, Jitan Ram Manjhi has five MLAs. Manjhi is creating pressure so that if he does not get a Rajya Sabha seat, then he should get a seat in the Legislative Council. Dhirendra Kumar said that two seats will remain with BJP, in such a situation it is not necessary that BJP should keep both the seats with itself. Can give one seat to his colleague. Most of the discussion is about Chirag Paswan.

On the other hand, it was also said that it is not necessary that Nitin Nabin should get one of the two seats in Rajya Sabha, there is no such rule nor is there any pressure. When Nitin Gadkari became the national president, he was a member of the Legislative Council in Maharashtra. Despite being the National President, he remained a member of the Legislative Council. He did not resign. It is not mandatory for the National President to go to Rajya Sabha or Lok Sabha. There is no problem if he is a member of any state.

Large scale elections are to be held across the country in the year 2026. Assembly elections will be held in important states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and West Bengal. Senior leaders whose tenure is ending in 2026 include Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, Digvijay Singh, Sharad Pawar and Union ministers Hardeep Singh Puri, BL Verma, Ravneet Singh Bittu and George Kurien. The political future of these leaders is uncertain, as it remains to be seen whether they will return to Parliament or will be replaced by new faces.

5 seats of Bihar in Rajya Sabha will become vacant in April and 7 more seats of Maharashtra will become vacant in November 2026. Additional seats will also be vacant in Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. This period is a concentrated phase of changes in the Upper House, which will affect several states simultaneously.

10 seats of UP will be vacant
10 seats in Uttar Pradesh are also going to become vacant by November 2026. The tenure of the members of Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh will also end in the same period, due to which the scope of change will increase even further.

Currently NDA has 129 seats in Rajya Sabha, while the opposition has 78 seats. The 2026 elections may prove to be an important contest, which may change the balance of power in the Upper House and may also influence the party’s strategies in the future.

Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) patron and Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi has once again expressed his displeasure over seat sharing in the ruling coalition party NDA in Bihar. In Gaya, he clearly said that his party should get its due rights in NDA, especially in Rajya Sabha.

He further said, “We thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making us a minister, but today one Rajya Sabha seat is outstanding.” Manjhi further said, “Based on the results of the 2024 elections and the Lok Sabha, Hindustani Awam Morcha should get a seat in the Rajya Sabha elections to be held in April. This is my demand.”

On discussions about separation from the NDA, Manjhi said, “As far as separation is concerned, as long as the organization is with us, perhaps no one will talk about separation. If we had got at least 10 seats and we had won 8, we would have become a recognized party.”

Jitan Ram Manjhi said, “We should contest elections on 50, 60 or 100 seats. If we contest elections, we will get 6 percent votes and we will become a recognized party. We are saying this only so that our party can get recognition.”

Meanwhile, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal praised Prime Minister Modi and his policies. He said, “For 11 years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been leading the country and making policies. Through his policies, the policy of social justice seems to be coming on the ground.”

Arjun Ram Meghwal said that social justice has clearly arrived in rural areas. Houses are being upgraded, electricity and toilets are being provided and loans are being given under the Mudra scheme. I was able to see these changes during my frequent visits to the villages. So far 25 crore people have come out of poverty, which is a major achievement in implementing social justice.

According to the program related to ‘Vande Mataram’ debate, ruling NDA members have been allotted three hours out of the total 10 hours allotted for it in the Lok Sabha. The discussion on ‘Vande Mataram’ is likely to be stormy due to differences of opinion about the song between the ruling party and the opposition. The Rajya Sabha session will be held on Tuesday. In the Rajya Sabha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will initiate the discussion on Tuesday, after which Health Minister and House leader JP Nadda will speak.
