Nagara and Dravidian style temples: The spiritual soul of India is expressed through architecture in thousands of temples spanning from the snow-clad peaks of the Himalayas to the scorching plains of Tamil Nadu. Although these temples serve the same spirit of ritual, devotion and spiritual harmony, they are built according to two very different styles.

The Nagara style of North India and the Dravidian style of South India are very different from each other’s design. These reflect deep diversity in history, culture, climate and worldview. Let us know what is the difference in the architecture of these two Indian temples?

Why is the temple of Lord Jagannath Swamy different from other Vishnu temples? Know the secret behind this?

Based on Temple Nagara style of North India

Nagara style originated in North India in the Gupta period (about 5th century AD), which is called the Golden Age of Indian art and literature. This style flourished especially in North Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha and Bihar.

The special feature of the Nagar temple is its curved shikhara, which rises sharply above the sanctum sanctorum. This vertical, elevated shape was created to attract the gaze and soul of the devotee upward, symbolizing worldly salvation.

The sanctum sanctorum is usually dark and meditative, providing a space for spiritual introversion.

Nagara temples are generally small, with minimal walls and gates, and more emphasis on verticality than grandeur. Some of the most revered city temples include the Kandariya Mahadev Temple at Khajuraho, the Konark Sun Temple and the Kedarnath Temple located in the Himalayas.

Dravidian style based on southern regions

Unlike the Nagara style, the Dravidian style began to develop during the reign of the Pallava dynasty around the 6th–7th century AD, but the style flourished during the reign of the Chola, Pandya and later Vijayanagara kings. This temple is prominent in the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Unlike the tall shikharas of Nagara temples, Dravidian temples have pyramidal towers, called vimanas, built immediately above the sanctum. But even more than this, their huge Gopurams are the center of attraction. These grand gateway towers are usually larger than the sanctum sanctorum and are decorated with sculptures of gods, goddesses, demons, dancers and animals.

Dravidian temples are built like a fortress, with high walls enclosing several concentric courtyards that encourage circumambulation, religious activities and community celebrations.

These temples are made of hard granite, which is ideal for the southern region with humid and monsoon climate. Famous examples include the Brihadeeswarar Temple of Thanjavur, the Meenakshi Temple of Madurai, the Rameshwaram Temple and the Virupaksha Temple of Hampi.

In North India, there are strict rules regarding food and drink around the temples, but in South India, people are more open and practical in this matter, hence different types of dishes, even non-veg, are available around the temples.

The feeling of religious faith is very deep in South India, but in matters related to food, personal and economic viewpoints are given priority. At the same time, things are opposite in North India, where vegetarian food is closely linked to religious rituals.

Instead of fruits and flowers, Maa Kali is offered momos, noodles and fried rice in this temple.

Non-vegetarian food is not considered a religious impurity in South India

In South Indian traditions, ritual purity inside the temple premises is kept separate from eating habits outside the temple premises.

Meat and fish have been consumed for a long time among the Nair, Reddy, Bokkaliga, Thevar and even some Brahmin communities in Kerala and Bengal. Here, non-vegetarian food is not considered a religious impurity, but an important part of the cultural identity.

Special differences between South and North Indian temples

Another special difference is also related to the administration of temples. Most temples in North India are run by politically or socially motivated organizations, which usually promote a strict vegetarian diet.

At the same time, temples in South India are generally governed by devasthanam boards or monasteries, which reflect representation of local communities, making it unusual to follow strict dietary rules.

No laddus, no fruits, in these temples the goddess is offered pizza, sandwiches and pani-puri.

One reason for this is that due to the Dravidian movement, Ambedkarbadi ideology and local politics in South India, there is not much strictness in religious matters around temples. Therefore, there are no special restrictions on people regarding food and drink.

There are temples in towns like Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu and Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh, where local people, especially fishermen, depend on the sale of non-vegetarian food for their livelihood. Expecting removal of such shops from these areas is not only right but also morally wrong.

Consumption of fish and meat is common in these areas due to the abundance of fish and meat available near coastal areas near the sea and also due to ancient Dravidian culinary traditions.

What do the rural and local traditions of South India say?

Apart from this, meat and fish are offered in many rural and local traditions of South India, including some Shaiva and Shakta rituals. That is why opposition to meat shops near temples is not seen or heard.

In matters of religion in South India, the emphasis is on devotion and inner spirituality rather than controlling others. Because of this, a more tolerant environment is seen there and people easily accept eating and drinking habits.

Historically, rulers of South India like the Cholas and Pandyas, who were known for their temple patronage, actually consumed meat, making a non-vegetarian diet an important part of the local culture along with religious belief.

According to the information available on the internet, the number of vegetarian people is high in states like Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan. On the contrary, in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Telangana, most of the people consume non-vegetarian food.

Such temples of South India which despite being sacred, have hotels and restaurants serving non-vegetarian food around them –

Rameshwaram, Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu A Jyotirlinga temple surrounded by seafood restaurants supporting the local fishing community.

Meenakshi temple is built in a busy part of Madurai Tamil Nadu city, around which there are mutton biryani shops.

Chidambaram Nataraja Temple Tamil Nadu which is surrounded by vegetarian and non-vegetarian restaurants.

Arunataleswara Temple Tiruvannamalai Tamil Nadu Non-veg is also available in local hotels.

Pink cold is knocking in many parts of the country, while morning fog is being seen in Delhi-NCR since Diwali. Continuous rain continues in the southern and western parts. According to the India Meteorological Department, heavy to very heavy rainfall has been recorded in many parts of South Karnataka, Kerala, Manipur and Tamil Nadu in the last 24 hours.

There is a possibility of clear sky in Delhi on Friday (24 October). Light mist or fog may be visible in the morning. The maximum temperature in Delhi is likely to be between 31 to 33 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is likely to be between 17 to 19 degrees Celsius. The air quality of Delhi has deteriorated significantly and the slow wind has worsened the situation. Anand Vihar recorded an air quality index (AQI) of 428, the highest among all the monitoring stations. Air quality at most other stations in Delhi remained in the ‘very poor’ category, while at only 6 out of 48 stations it was found in the ‘poor’ category.

Mercury will fall in UP
At present the weather in Uttar Pradesh is clear and dry. According to the Meteorological Department, at present there is no active weather system in effect in the state. Changes can be seen in the weather of southern Uttar Pradesh from October 29. Meteorologist Atul Singh said that at present the weather will remain dry in the entire state till October 28.

In the next 3-4 days, the minimum temperature is likely to drop by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in Western Uttar Pradesh and by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, while there will be no significant change in the maximum temperature. Western and central parts of the state are likely to record 16 to 18 degrees Celsius, while many parts of the eastern and central regions are likely to record 20 to 22 degrees Celsius. Overall, the weather will remain dry and pleasant in the state for the next few days. However, by the end of the month, the weather pattern may change due to the possibility of light rain in the southern and eastern districts.

How will be the weather of Bihar during Chhath Puja?
There is a change in the weather in Bihar even before Chhath Puja. According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of light rain and cloudy sky in many parts of the state in the next few days. IMD says that the weather will be normal on the days of Nahay-Khay and Kharna, but there may be light clouds and drizzle during the evening Arghya and morning Arghya.

According to IMD, there are chances of rain from October 27. There is a possibility of rain in Jamui and Bhagalpur on this day. There is a possibility of sporadic rain in Nawada, Jamui and Banka districts on October 28.

Rain and snowfall in Uttarakhand
Signs of change are visible in the weather of Uttarakhand. According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of rain and snowfall in many parts of the state. Light rain is expected in hilly areas, while snowfall may occur in high altitude areas. The effect of rain and snowfall in the mountainous areas can also be felt in the plains below, due to which there will be a drop in temperature. According to IMD, there is a possibility of light rain in Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar and Rudraprayag today.

Sarsop, known as Hanuman Fruit in India, is a tropical fruit which many people like for their health. It is both sweet and sour in taste and feels very tasty to eat. The question is, is it right to take it for health? Especially when some people claim that it can help in serious diseases like cancer.

What did Food and Drug Administration say?

The US CF and Drug Administration believes that Sarsop or its products have no approval to use any disease. The FDA states that whatever claims about these products are not correct. In addition, these products are sold in the market without any protection or efficacy, which can be dangerous for both human and pets. Therefore, it is not considered safe to use Sarsop as a treatment for a serious disease.

Benefits from Sarsop

Eating Sarsop as a fruit is completely safe and has many nutritional benefits. First, it is rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants protect our body from the damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals can speed up stress and aging process in the body, so it is necessary to consume antioxidants.

Sarsop also has antibacterial properties. This can help reduce bacteria and infections in our body. However, it is necessary to seek the advice of the specialist before using it as a medicine. Some studies suggest that Sarsop can also help in reducing inflammation. Although it has been seen mainly in the study on animals, more research is needed to confirm its impact on humans. Nevertheless, it is a positive sign that this fruit may have some health benefits.

Low calories and delicious fruits

A major advantage of Sarsop is that it is a low calorie fruit. If you are trying to control weight or follow a healthy diet, it can be beneficial to include Sarsop in your diet. Apart from this, its sweet and fresh taste also improves.

You can eat Sarsop as a natural and delicious fruit. It helps in nourishing your body and can become part of a healthy diet. But it is important to remember that do not use it as a reliable alternative to treat any serious illness. Always consult an expert. The best way to enjoy Sarsopka is to eat it as a fresh fruit. You can also take it as juice, smoothie or light snacks. Its sweet and white taste and nutrition make it a great fruit, which can be included in your diet without any worry.
