If you ever wonder how many IAS officers UPSC creates every year and how many times its examination is conducted, then this information is useful for you. Every year lakhs of candidates try their luck through UPSC Civil Services Examination, one of the most prestigious examinations in the country, but in the end very few people get a chance to become an IAS.

How many IAS does UPSC make in a year?

UPSC i.e. Union Public Service Commission conducts Civil Services Examination (CSE) every year. Through this examination, officers are selected for many big services including IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS. Usually around 175 to 180 candidates are selected for IAS service every year. Although the total number of civil services seats may change every year, the number of IAS has remained almost at the same level for a long time. This does not mean that only 180 people pass the exam. First candidates are selected for all the services and then services are distributed according to rank, preference and available seats.

There is no separate exam to become an IAS

Many people believe that to become an IAS one has to give a separate exam, but it is not so. To become an IAS, a candidate has to appear in the UPSC Civil Services Examination. Candidates who perform well in the examination get different services depending on their rank. Candidates who get the highest rank often have more chances of getting IAS service.

When is UPSC exam?

UPSC Civil Services Examination is conducted once a year and is completed in three phases.

First Stage – Prelims- This is the initial stage of the examination. Objective questions are asked in this. Only the candidates who pass this stage reach the next stage.

Second stage – Mains- This is a written examination in which the candidate’s subject understanding, analytical ability and writing ability are seen.

Third Stage – Interview (Personality Test)- In the final stage, the candidate’s thinking, personality, decision making ability and administrative understanding are tested.

After completion of all three stages, the final merit list is released and services are allotted on the same basis.

How tough is the competition?

UPSC is counted among the toughest examinations in the country. Every year lakhs of candidates apply but the final selection is done on limited seats only. That is why success in this examination requires not only studies but the right strategy, regular practice and continuous hard work for a long time.

When should one start preparation?

If your aim is to become an IAS then it is better to start preparation early. First of all, understand the exam syllabus, read basic books, pay attention to current affairs and practice answer writing regularly.
