The Election Commission conducts a particularly thorough revision of the voter list from time to time, so that no eligible citizen is left out and wrong names are removed. Meanwhile, the Election Commission has taken a big and relief decision regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign going on in Uttar Pradesh. One month additional time has now been given for those whose names have not yet been added to the voter list, or whose name, age, address or other details are incorrect.

Now you can apply till 6th March

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Uttar Pradesh Navdeep Rinwa informed in a press conference at Lok Bhawan in Lucknow that now voters can register their claims and objections till March 6, 2026. Earlier its last date was 6 February, which has now been extended. This means that new voters can get their names added by filling Form 6. Form 7 can be filled to remove wrong or duplicate name. Form 8 can be used for correction in name, age, address or other information.

SIR process started from 27th October

CEO Navdeep Rinwa said that this special revision campaign in Uttar Pradesh started from October 27. Under this, voter counting was done door-to-door from November 4 to January 6. The draft voter list was released on 6 January. After this, claims and objections were taken from 6 January to 6 February, but in view of the large number of applications received and the demand of political parties, the time limit was extended by one month.

Now the final voter list will come on April 10

According to the new program of the Election Commission, applications will be taken till March 6. All claims and objections will be resolved by March 27 and the final voter list of Uttar Pradesh will be published on April 10.

Lakhs of applications, crores of notices

According to the data released by the Election Department, 82,684 Form-7 were filled for deletion of names, about 37.8 lakh Form-6 were submitted for adding names, so far 1,076 applications have been received under Form 6A for migrant voters. Apart from this, notices are to be sent to a total of 3.26 crore voters. Till now 2.37 crore notices have been issued. 86.27 lakh notices have reached the voters. Hearing of about 30 lakh cases has been completed.

Mistake in many names and notice issued

The Election Department said that there are about 14 lakh voters whose names are in the draft list, but their physical mapping could not be done. There are 22 lakh voters whose mapping has been done, but some mistakes were found in the details. In all such cases, notices are being sent to the concerned voters, so that decisions can be taken on the basis of correct information. For the convenience of voters, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will be available at polling stations from 10 am to 12 noon on all working days. Voters can meet them directly and get help in filling the form and getting information. At the same time, the Election Commission admitted that still many women and young voters between 18 to 21 years have not been able to be included in the voter list. An appeal has been made to all such citizens to come forward and apply in time.

A shocking incident came to light during the Voter List Revision (SIR) in Purulia district of West Bengal. The Chakraborty family, separated for almost four decades, has now reunited. In fact, the sudden disappearance of elder son Vivek Chakraborty from home in 1988 was a shock for the family. He was searched for years, but no clue was found. It seemed that this meeting was now impossible, but the SIR campaign opened the door which the family had thought closed. The family has also given complete information about this.

How did you meet through SIR?

Vivek’s younger brother Pradeep Chakraborty is a Booth Level Officer (BLO) of the same area. His name and mobile number were recorded in the SIR form. Vivek’s son lived in Kolkata and did not know anything about his uncle. He contacted Pradeep for the documents. Initially the conversation was limited to papers, but gradually the mysteries of the family started getting resolved.

What did Vivek’s younger brother Pradeep Chakraborty tell?

Pradeep said, “My elder brother never came home after 1988. We searched everywhere. When the boy’s answers started matching the personal information of our family, then I realized that I was talking to my nephew.”

What did Vivek say about SIR?

In this way, after 37 years, the eldest son of the Chakraborty family, Vivek returned home. After a long silence between the two brothers, an outpouring of emotions began. Vivek said, “It is an indescribable joy to return home and meet my family after 37 years. I thank the Election Commission, because if the SIR process had not happened, this reunion would not have been possible.”

The controversy has started just hours after the Election Commission of India (EC) announced the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in 12 states and union territories. The states where this process is to begin include opposition-ruled Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, where assembly elections are to be held next year.

Tam Lanadu was the first to raise the flag of protest. Chief Minister M.K. The Stalin-led DMK government has termed the process as a conspiracy to snatch away the voting rights of the people of the state and has decided to call an all-party meeting on the issue on November 2. DMK and its allies targeted the BJP government at the Center and said that this step is an attempt to weaken and defame democracy. He says that it will be very difficult to do this work on such a large scale during the north-east monsoon in November-December.

The party alliance said, “We are not saying that the voter list should not be revised, but it is wrong to do it in such a hurry. When assembly elections are going to be held in the state in April, then this step is not appropriate.” DMK alleged that Muslims, Dalits and women were targeted during SIR in Bihar. The statement said, “Tamil Nadu will not allow any such conspiracy to succeed. We will together oppose it.”

West Bengal and Kerala government also targeted

The ruling TMC of West Bengal and the CPI(M) government of Kerala also made sharp attacks on the Election Commission. TMC MP Derek O’Brien said, “The SIR in Bihar was just a trial, the real target is Bengal. The public will answer to the commission in a few months, which has now become completely biased.”

Senior CPI(M) leader M.A. Baby said that the Commission’s decision is one-sided and hasty. He alleged, “When the Supreme Court is hearing the validity of SIR in Bihar, taking this process forward is an insult to democratic standards.”

Congress also raised questions on the intentions of the Election Commission

Congress also raised questions on the intentions of the Election Commission. Party spokesperson Pawan Kheda said, “In Bihar, the shortcomings of the SIR had to be rectified by the intervention of even the Supreme Court. Now the same experiment is being repeated in other states. It is clear that the Election Commission is now working under the control of the BJP.”

The Election Commission in Bihar is amending the voter list. Opposition is making a hurry about this. Meanwhile, political analyst Amitabh Tiwari gave his opinion on the issue. He said that this is not new, but when the figure pointed to the removal of 41 lakh names, then the question is bound to arise.

This time the Commission says that these names are being removed as dead persons, transferred voters and unfair or fake names. Of these, about 17 lakh names are of deceased voters. 12-13 lakh shifted voters and remaining 10-12 lakh names suspect that they may be duplicate or fake voters, but when this figure comes out in the election year, the opposition questions whether it is only routine process or a step affecting political mathematics?

According to a recent survey, people’s opinion is divided that 35% people believe that removing illegal voters is the right decision. 16% of people consider it only routine process. At the same time, 27% believes that it was not required yet, while 15-17% people consider it to be inspired by political purpose. It makes it clear that the public is confused and divided about this decision.

Will voting intentions really affect?
In a conversation with News, political analyst Amitabh Tiwari said that if the cut voters are already dead or transferred, then it is natural to be withdrawn. This will not have any special effect on the election results, but if such people are left out who are really living and local voters. If he had already lodged himself in the voter list, then it can affect the voting intension. As long as it is not clear how many legitimate voters are included in the removed voters, it is difficult to say which alliance will be affected by this decision.

Opposition’s concern in the absence of data
Opposition parties are repeatedly raising the issue that the Commission is not telling how many illegal migrants in the removed voters or how many voters had registered a name in repetition. Due to lack of transparency, this issue has become more controversial. The latest survey gives these indications that the Grand Alliance (RJD + Congress) sees a little lead, but the NDA is going a little further in the favorite face of the Chief Minister’s post. This means that the election is still completely open. Voting intension is not stable and changes are possible at the last moment.

The Congress has given a serious reaction to the statement of ‘election boycott’ given by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav regarding Bihar assembly elections. The party said on Saturday that this warning of Tejashwi Yadav indicates that fair election conditions are not being created in the state.

The issue of boycott is still ‘premature’

Senior Congress leader and spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that the issue of election boycott is still ‘pre -pre -‘, but if such a collective decision is taken, it will raise a big question on the credibility of the Election Commission.

He said, “This is an important question, which is still premature. Don’t see the statement, look at the spirit behind it … The feeling behind it is pain, pain, anger. That is that we are completely ready, but why the ground is unilateral, uneven, this is its message.”

Tejashwi accused about SIR

Significantly, Tejashwi Yadav recently warned that if the process of special intensive revision of the voter list is not withdrawn, the RJD can boycott the upcoming assembly elections if the process of special intensive revision of the list is not withdrawn. They allege that this process can become a means of removing the names of many new voters from the voter list or not to include them, which can cause damage to the opposition parties.

There is a possibility of holding assembly elections in Bihar between October-November this year. In such a situation, the increasing dispute over the voter list can increase the conflict between the opposition and the Election Commission.

The Congress made it clear that it is fully ready to contest the election, but it cannot compromise on the fairness of the democratic process. Singhvi indicated that if the opposition parties have to take a big decision together, then the Congress will also be ready for it.

Now it will be interesting to see whether the opposition parties unite and pressurize the Election Commission on this issue, and how the commission reacts to this warning.

Bihar sir election commission: The initial phase of SIR in Bihar has been successfully completed. The Election Commission has informed that the work of printing and distribution of calculation forms has almost been completed. Along with this, it has also been clarified that no changes have been made in the SIR, as rumors were being spread by some people.

So far, 1.69 crore i.e. 21.46% calculation forms have been collected, out of which 7.25% form has also been uploaded on the ECINET portal. Administrative officials said that the work is moving forward within the stipulated time and the survey is being executed with complete transparency.

Voter list update process started from June 24
The Election Commission had ordered to update the voter list in Bihar from 24 June 2025. Its purpose is to remove ineligible names from the voter list and to maintain only the right voters in the list. This process has been started simultaneously across the state.

Last date for submission of documents 25 July
The Election Commission has said that all eligible voters will have to submit their necessary documents by 25 July 2025. However, those who will not be able to give documents till this date, they will get a chance to give documents even during the period of claims and objections.

Commission cleaning on rumors spread on social media
It was written in an advertisement that ‘now only the form is to be filled, there is no need to submit the documents’, which caused confusion on social media. On this, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Bihar Congress chief Rajesh Kumar alleged that it is a conspiracy to take away the rights of Dalits and the underprivileged. The Election Commission has made it clear that this statement is misleading and wrong and appealed to the people not to believe anything without official information.

Opposition questions and meeting Election Commission
Many opposition leaders including Tejashwi Yadav met the Election Commission in New Delhi and Patna and asked why voter list is being updated not only in Bihar, not only in Bihar? At the same time, the NDA accused the opposition that they are looking for an excuse for their defeat.

CEO said – SIR is completely based on the instructions of the commission
Bihar Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) said on Sunday that the SIR is running as per the order of June 24 of the Election Commission. In the draft voter list released on 1 August 2025, they will have their names who have submitted nomination forms and documents on time.
