LPG Shortage in India: The war between Iran, America and Israel and the resulting tension in the Middle East had such an impact that India’s imports of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) have declined from March 2026. India imports 60 percent of its LPG requirements. In such a situation, due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, there are large-scale disruptions in supplies.

Till February 2026, India used to import about 20 lakh tonnes of LPG every month, which reduced to 11 lakh tonnes in March and only 9.5 lakh tonnes in April. Due to the continuing uncertainty and lack of clarity on when the movement of ships from Hormuz will return to normal as before the war, India’s LPG supply challenge is far from over and it seems that the supply shortage will continue in the times to come.

Crisis on LPG supply

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway located between Iran and Oman, is a sea route through which a large part of the world’s petroleum usually passes. As tensions between Iran and the Middle East deepened, there has been a huge decline in the movement of ships on this route, which is now negligible.

Before the war started in Iran, 130-140 ships used to pass through this route every day. At the same time, now this number has reduced to less than 10. This blockage has created a big problem for many energy importing countries including India. This has also affected the supply of crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG), but the supply of LPG has been affected the most.

LPG imports are decreasing rapidly

According to vessel tracking data from commodity market analytics firm Kpler, India’s LPG imports in the first 11 months of 2025-26 — April to February — averaged about 2 million tonnes per month.Data shows that LPG imports fell to 1.1 million tonnes in March and further declined to 0.95 million tonnes in April.

Companies that rely solely on nuts, dry fruits and cocoa powder or raw cocoa say prices have risen sharply in the past few weeks, as have freight and packaging costs. An industry official told TOI that the prices of nuts and dry fruits have now increased by 15% to 22% as compared to earlier.

Inflation is on top of the weather.

ABP News conducted a ground investigation in a textile mill located in Delhi-NCR, where Kamal Mishra, Delhi President of Textile Association India, tells in an exclusive conversation with ABP News that the biggest impact of this war on our industries has been on the cost of fuel and raw materials. Processing of cotton fabric has become expensive, while due to the cost of crude oil used in synthetic fabric, the prices of polyester have increased by about 25 percent in the last two-three months. Due to non-availability of gas cylinders and increase in energy costs, there has been additional pressure of 8 to 10 percent on the total cost of the industry.

40 to 45 thousand containers are stranded at different ports.

Kamal Mishra says that the shipping cost has also become expensive, where earlier the cost of a 40 feet container used to be 1200 dollars, now it has reached 1900 to 2000 dollars and due to this war, at least 40 to 45 thousand containers of the textile industry are stuck at different ports, which has created huge uncertainty in the entire supply chain.

Talking to ABP News, Pawan Kumar Gupta, owner of a cotton mill, says that due to this war, the production in his unit has fallen by 40 percent. Earlier, his mill used to make 15 lakh meters of cloth every month, now it has come down to 8-9 lakh meters. Pavan further explains that the shortage of PNG, increasing chemical cost and decreasing labor availability have worsened the situation in this industry. In the last one month, the processing cost has increased by about 20 percent, which used to cost Rs 40 earlier for printing, now it has increased to Rs 50.

More than 100 chemicals are used

In the same mill, Devansh Gupta, director and son of Pawan Gupta, told ABP News the entire process of how this cloth is processed and then how it reaches the common consumers. Devansh explains that the entire process of making a cloth consists of many stages like spinning, weaving, dyeing and printing. More than 100 chemicals are used in all these and only then they take the manufacturing from our mill and make the garment and only then it reaches the common consumers.

Aayega Devansh tells that their raw material comes from China and Türkiye. In the current situation due to war, the supply of these raw materials is disrupted and prices have increased by 40 to 50 percent. Its direct impact is on common consumers in the form of inflation on the final product.

Prices increased by 25 to 30 percent

Yogesh Mahajan, Vice President of Textile Association India, says that the prices of synthetic filaments have increased by 25 to 30 percent in the last 1 to 2 months. He says that many textile mills have reduced the production time from 18 hours to 10 hours, the effect of which is also visible on products like carpets, blankets and bedsheets. Yogesh says that the government has given relief in custom duty on petroleum products, but the rising prices of raw materials have increased the production cost.

Laborers are returning to their villages in large numbers

At the same time, Textile Association General Secretary DK Singh further clarified the ground reality. He says that due to shortage of gas cylinders and inflation, a large number of workers from mills are returning to their villages. Giving an example, he said that in industrial areas like Silvassa, labor has reduced by 20 percent, due to which polyester production has declined by 30 percent. According to him, about 20 percent of textile mills across the country have been closed, while 30 to 40 percent of the units are working at half their capacity.

Al Jazeera, quoting Iranian media reports, said that Iraq will continue to be allowed to travel through the Strait of Hormuz. IRGC spokesman Ibrahim Zolfghari praised the Iraqis. He said, he has stood firmly with the people of Iran in the war. Ibrahim further said, ‘Iraq, which is brotherly with us, will be free from any restrictions imposed on the Strait of Hormuz. Trump warned to open Hormuz in 48 hours

US President Donald Trump on Saturday (April 4) again warned Iran that if the Strait of Hormuz is not opened or an agreement is not reached within 48 hours, it will have to face serious consequences. Trump’s statement came when Iran’s Bushehr nuclear base was targeted by America and Israel. One person was killed in the attack. At the same time, Tehran has claimed to have shot down two American fighter jets.

Trump posted on the social media platform Truth and wrote, time is running out fast. Iran was already given time to reach the agreement and open the Strait of Hormuz, but now only 48 hours are left. If the deadline is crossed, America will wreak havoc on Iran.

India has given a big relief to Sri Lanka amid the energy crisis caused by Iran’s war against America and Israel and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. India supplied a total of 38,000 metric tons of petroleum products to Sri Lanka as emergency assistance, which includes 20,000 metric tons of diesel and 18,000 metric tons of petrol.

Sri Lanka openly expressed gratitude to India after this help. According to the Indian High Commission in Colombo, this supply was made at a time when the global supply chain had been disrupted due to the Iran war and Sri Lanka was facing a serious fuel crisis. China did not help

In January, Sri Lanka signed a $3.7 billion deal with China’s state energy company Sinopec to build a 200,000 barrel capacity oil refinery near Hambantota port. But China has not yet provided any help during the crisis caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This statement of Premadasa is being seen as an indirect criticism of China.

Force majeure and disruption in international supplies

Due to the war in West Asia, many international suppliers refused to supply fuel citing ‘force majeure’. Sri Lanka got into serious trouble due to shortage of ships and obstruction in sea routes. In such a situation, India immediately provided emergency supplies through Indian Oil Corporation (IOC).

An increase of 30 to 40 percent has been recorded in the prices of dry fruits like pistachios, plums, raisins, figs, dates and mamra coming from Iran. This has not only increased the costs of traders but has also affected the pockets of common consumers.

Pressure on pharmaceutical industry due to inflation of raw materials

The rise in prices of essential commodities like chemical components, plastics and aluminum has increased the costs of pharmaceutical companies. These materials are widely used in the manufacturing of tablets and syrups as well as in packaging, making production expensive.

In recent times, the price of paracetamol raw material has increased by about 47 percent. Street food business collapses due to LPG crisis

The shortage of LPG cylinders has badly affected the hotels, restaurants, banquets, dhabas and street food vendors of Delhi. Many small businessmen have either been forced to close their shops or are able to operate only for a limited time.

Out of 50 thousand vendors, 40% business is on the verge of closure.

According to CTI, there are about 50 thousand street food vendors in Delhi. Of these, 30 to 40 percent vendors have reached the stage of closing their business due to shortage of LPG. This is becoming a serious crisis not only for business but also for the livelihood of thousands of people.
