I did not discuss anything about politics or joining any party. Right now I have no plans to join politics. My first priority is acting.

Vijay kept distance from politics
Vijay kept his distance from politics for many years, but social and political issues continued to appear in his films. In films like Thalaivaa, Mersal, Sarkar and Master, he gave messages related to corruption, education, politics and social problems. Due to this, discussions continued regarding his political future. Finally, on 2 February 2024, Vijay made his official entry into politics by starting his political party “Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam” i.e. TVK. He also announced that he would gradually distance himself from films and concentrate completely on politics. Vijay told that his film Jan Nayakgan will be the last film of his film career.

Jana Nayakgan is a political action drama film directed by H Vinoth. Along with Vijay, Pooja Hegde and Bobby Deol will also be seen in this film. The name of the film means leader of the people. Because of this, people started drawing parallels between the film and Vijay’s real political journey. A mixture of politics, society and action is shown in the film. Earlier this film was scheduled to be released on 9 January 2026 on the occasion of Pongal, but later its release was postponed. According to reports, due to the political content of the film and Vijay’s increasing political activism before the assembly elections, the Censor Board’s investigation took a long time, which led to the delay. After this, Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were held on 4 May 2026 and the results brought a big change in the politics of the state. Vijay’s party TVK emerged as the largest party by winning 108 seats. With this, the 59 years old dominance of Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu ended.
Where did Vijay contest elections from?
Vijay himself contested the elections from Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East seats and won both the places. However, his party fell 10 seats short of the 118 seats required for majority. Due to this, a situation of hung assembly was created in the state. After the election defeat, Chief Minister MK Stalin resigned on May 5. After this, Vijay has become the 9th and first non-Dravidian Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
