Although he was a big name in the media world, most of his wealth came from land. Because of this, he was among the largest private land owners in America. At his peak his wealth reached approximately $10 million, but it declined rapidly after the merger of AOL and Time Warner.
In 1996, he sold his company to Time Warner for $7.3 billion. But when AOL bought Time Warner in 2001, the company’s shares fell and Turner’s wealth also declined significantly. Ted Turner was one of America’s fourth largest private landowners. He had about 20 lakh acres of land.
