On the request of Duryodhana, Shakuni challenged Yudhishthir to play a game of dice. Yudhishthir knew that gambling was not appropriate, yet he accepted the game due to royal dharma and the decorum of the assembly. From here the biggest crisis of Mahabharata started and the path of deceit was opened.
As soon as the game started, Yudhishthir started putting his huge army, elephants, horses and many means of war at stake. Shakuni kept winning every time with his deceitful dice. Yudhishthir was confident that the next bet would be his, but every bet went out of his hands.
One by one, the best chariots, brave warriors, soldiers, servants and immense wealth were also put at stake. Shakuni kept winning every time by deceit. Yudhishthir’s losses kept increasing, but he could not muster the courage to leave the game. His conscience gradually got suppressed due to his addiction to gambling.
Yudhishthir even put his gold, silver, gems, treasures and palaces at stake. The prosperity, glory and years of hard work of the state were lost in a few moments. Shakuni’s deceit continued to succeed and the wealth of the Pandavas continued to go into the hands of the Kauravas.
Despite consecutive defeats, Yudhishthir made the next bet instead of ending the game. Shakuni kept instigating him again and again for new bets. Not greed, but the hope of getting back the victory could not stop them. This hope became the biggest trap for him.
Even when wealth, army and glory were all lost, the game of gambling did not end. Every next move took Yudhishthir deeper into trouble. This was the same turning point which later laid the foundation for the humiliation of the Pandavas, their exile and the Mahabharata war.
A game played with deceit is never fair and every decision taken out of greed or stubbornness can lead to destruction. Losing discretion at the wrong time is the biggest defeat. In life, only truth, patience and right decisions give permanent victory.
