Amitabh Bachchan CA: The story of Premchand Godha, who was once a Chartered Accountant (CA) of Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, is really quite interesting and inspiring. Premchand Godha, born in a farmer family of Rajasthan, is today the managing director of pharmaceutical company Ipca Laboratories, whose market cap is Rs 48000 crore. He himself owns assets worth around Rs 15400 ($1.6 billion).
childhood spent in poverty
However, there was a time when he or his family did not have money. Coming from a farmer family, he has seen his parents struggling with financial constraints in his childhood. Seeing his parents working hard in the fields, Premchand also started studying diligently. Time passed and he completed his graduation in commerce from Rajasthan University.
Opportunity to join Bachchan family
After graduation, due to his hard work and ability, Premchand obtained CA degree from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). In 1971, Godha started his professional career as a chartered accountant. Seeing his ability, Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan gave him a chance to work as his financial advisor and chartered accountant. He handled the finances of the Bachchan family with great responsibility for many years. During this time, he also gained a deep understanding of business management and corporate finance.
Bought company together with Bachchan family
The year 1975 proved to be a turning point for him, when he, along with the Bachchan family, decided to buy Ipca Laboratories, which was already a loss-making company. When Premchand Godha took over the reins of this company, its annual revenue was only Rs 54 lakh. In a way, the company was standing on the verge of collapse. Premchand devoted his entire life to erecting it. It was the result of his strategic acumen that he was appointed Managing Director (MD) of the company in 1983.
Premchand stood alone
In the year 1999, the Bachchan family got into huge debt due to the production house ABCL and they were forced to sell their entire stake in the company. Premchand stood firm without any fear and fully supported the company and put in all his strength in taking it forward. Today, the business of IPCA Laboratories is spread in more than 120 countries. The revenue of the company is more than Rs 9400. The company also manufactures more than 350 formulations and 80 active pharmaceutical products for various diseases like diabetes, malaria, heart disease and many more.
