West Bengal Assembly Polls 2026: Record voting this time in the West Bengal Assembly elections has created history. According to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, for the first time after independence in the first and second phase in the state, the voting figure has crossed 92 percent.
In the first phase on April 23, 91.78 percent voting was recorded, while in the second and final phase on April 29, 91.71 percent voting was recorded. According to the Election Commission, this is the highest voting percentage till date, surpassing the 2011 record of 84.72 percent.
Bumper voting in Bengal elections
The special thing in this election was that the participation of women voters was more than that of men. About 93.24 percent women voted, while the percentage of men was 91.74 percent. The main contest in the state was seen between Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party. Both the parties have described the heavy turnout as an indication of the atmosphere in their favor.
Voting took place amid long queues, political tension and sporadic violence in important areas of South Bengal – Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, Nadia and North-South 24 Parganas. These areas are considered very decisive from the electoral point of view.
TMC vs BJP contest
During the voting, incidents of clashes, vandalism, EVM malfunction and allegations and counter allegations were also reported at some places. Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of misusing central agencies, while opposition leader Subhendu Adhikari rejected the allegations, calling it “desperation”.
Overall, the record voting has made it clear that this time the election is very tough and decisive. Now it will be interesting to see whether such a large participation indicates a change in power or whether the Trinamool Congress manages to retain its hold.
