Australia’s Big Bash League is ready to write a new history. On Friday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that the first match of the BBL 2026-27 season will be played in India. He made this announcement in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
BBL is coming to India, this league is going to write a new history. PM Modi also said that for any sports league, coming to India and organizing an event guarantees massive reach and viewership. Before BBL creates history, know when and where will the Big Bash League debut in India?
BBL debut in India, when and where?
The debut match of Big Bash League in India will be held on 12th December this year. This match will be played at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, which is also famous as Chepauk. The teams of Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers will clash in the debut match of BBL to be held in India.
This will be the first time in history that a Big Bash League match will be played outside Australia. Big Bash League Executive General Manager Alistair Dobson said that opportunities to organize matches outside Australia have been explored to attract new audiences to the BBL.
Started in 2011
Australia started the Big Bash League in 2011 and till now 15 seasons have been played. The most successful team of BBL is Perth Scorchers, who have won the trophy 6 times and are also the recent champions. In the final of BBL 2025-26, Scorchers won the trophy for the sixth time by defeating Sydney Sixers by 6 wickets.
Apart from Perth, Sydney Sixers (3) and Brisbane Heat (2) are the only teams to have won the Big Bash League title more than once.
