Assembly Election Results 2026: Himanta Biswa Sarma said his government’s “unwavering stand” against Muslims of Bangladeshi origin and development work played an important role in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) getting two-thirds majority in the Assam Assembly elections.
In a press conference on Tuesday, he said that this victory is the “victory of the indigenous people” of Assam and the pace of development in the state will continue in future also. He cited the “double engine” government and the development achieved in the last five years as the major reasons for the victory.
Confidence increased in favor of NDA
According to Sharma, concrete steps were taken to fulfill the promise made by his government to protect the Assamese “jaati” (community), which also led to cultural and economic progress. He also said that his tough stance on the issue of Muslims of Bangladeshi origin had an impact on the election results.
The NDA came to power for the third consecutive time by winning 102 seats in the 126-member assembly, in which the Bharatiya Janata Party got 82 seats, while its allies also performed well.
Support of BJP from all sections
The Chief Minister claimed that all sections, including “Gen Z”, supported the BJP, which was evident from the victory of the party’s young candidates. He also rejected the allegations of “outsider” candidates and said that Assam’s identity is made up of diversity and it is wrong to create controversy over the roots of the people.
He also targeted the Indian National Congress and said that there are less leaders in the party who understand the sentiments of the people of Assam, this was the reason for its poor performance.
Increase in vote share for BJP
Analysis of the Election Commission’s data makes it clear that a relatively small change in the vote percentage in the Assam Assembly elections had a big impact on the results of the seats. Bharatiya Janata Party got 37.81 percent votes this time, which is 4.6 percent more than 33.21 percent in 2021. The direct benefit of this increase was seen in the number of seats and the party won 82 seats from 60, i.e. an increase of 22 seats.
In contrast, the position of the Indian National Congress was interesting. Its vote share increased marginally from 29.67 percent to 29.84 percent, but despite this its seats decreased from 29 to 19. This shows that not only the vote percentage, but also the distribution of votes and regional influence play a decisive role in election results.
At the same time, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won a total of 102 seats and achieved two-thirds majority in the 126-member assembly, which is its best performance till date and is far ahead of the majority mark of 64 seats. This election is an example of the fact that even a small vote swing can make a big difference in seats, especially when the contest is close in many areas.
