An important and long phone conversation took place between US President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (April 29). In the conversation, there was discussion on stopping the ongoing war in Ukraine and reducing Iran tension. President Trump has described this conversation as ‘very good and meaningful’.

What did Trump say?

While talking to reporters, Trump told that he has suggested to Putin a temporary ceasefire in the Ukraine war. Expressing hope, Trump said, ‘I think Putin can do this.’ Trump emphasized his relations with Putin, saying that they have known each other for a very long time, which could prove helpful in finding a diplomatic solution.

Discussion on Iran tension

Apart from Ukraine, both the leaders also talked about the ongoing tension in Iran and the issue of enriched uranium there. Putin offered Russia’s help to end this tension. However, setting priorities, Trump told Putin that he would like the Russian President to first focus on ending the Ukraine war.

This long conversation between Trump and Putin was confirmed by Kremlin advisor Yuri Ushakov. He told, the conversation between the two leaders lasted for more than 90 minutes. He said that Putin has shown readiness to declare a ceasefire during ‘Victory Day’ celebrated on 9 May. Trump openly supported this idea, because this day symbolizes the joint historic victory of Russia and America.

Ukraine war talks

Ushakov told that Donald Trump asked for information about the Ukraine war, on which Putin told him that the Russian army has the upper hand on the battlefield, Russian soldiers are pushing the front army (Ukraine) back from their positions.

The viewpoint of both the leaders regarding Ukrainian President Zelensky remained the same. According to the Kremlin, ‘Trump and Putin both believe that Ukraine’s current administration is pushing to prolong the tension instead of ending it.
