3D Atlas Human Brainstem : IIT Madras has prepared a special 3D atlas of the brain stem of the human brain, with the help of which scientists will be able to understand the most difficult parts of the brain more easily and deeply than before. The biggest feature of this special atlas is that the brain stem can be seen down to the cell level, that is, scientists will now be able to know which cells are present where in this part of the brain and what is their relationship with each other. Experts believe that this discovery can open new possibilities in the treatment and research of future Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and other neurological diseases. In such a situation, let us know how special is the 3D atlas of the human brainstem released by IIT Madras.
What is the brainstem and why is it so important?
The brainstem is the part of the brain that connects the brain to the spinal cord. It controls many vital functions of the body, including breathing, controlling heartbeat, maintaining blood pressure, swallowing and the sleep-wake cycle. If there is any kind of injury or disturbance in the brain stem, it can affect many important activities of the body. This is the reason why scientists were trying to understand this part in depth for a long time.
What is ANCHOR 3D Atlas?
This atlas prepared by Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Center (SGBC) of IIT Madras has been named ANCHOR. Its full name is Atlas of Neurochemical Characterization of the Human Brainstem with 3D Reconstruction. This is a digital 3D map of the human brainstem, which has been prepared with the help of modern technologies. With its help, scientists can see the structure of the brain stem from different angles and understand its microscopic structure.
What techniques were used?
Many techniques have been used to prepare this 3D atlas. In this, MRI scanning, histology, neurochemical mapping and 3D reconstruction techniques were combined together. With the help of all these techniques, scientists prepared a very large and accurate atlas of the human brain stem. The biggest feature of this atlas is that it provides sales level information. By analyzing hundreds of serial sections, researchers have created more than 200 structures of the brainstem, i.e. nuclei and fiber tracts, in 3D form. Additionally, eight different immunostain techniques were used on more than 500 sections, through which different types of neurochemical cells could be identified. This will help scientists understand which brain cells perform which tasks and what changes occur in them during diseases.
Which dates are included?
Different stages of human life are included in the ANCHOR Atlas. This includes the brain developing during pregnancy, the brainstem of childhood and the brainstem of adulthood. With this, scientists will be able to understand what kind of changes occur in this part of the brain with increasing age.
Atlas will be open to scientists from all over the world
IIT Madras has not limited this 3D atlas to its institute only. It has been made publicly available through a special online portal, so that scientists, doctors and researchers around the world can use it. It is also expected to promote international cooperation in the field of neuroscience.

Launched at BRICS Neuroscience Symposium
This atlas was unveiled during the 3rd BRICS Neuroscience Symposium 2026 held at IIT Madras. On this occasion, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, Ajay Kumar Sood said that this atlas can help in identifying cells affected by injuries and diseases related to the brain stem. In future, it can also be used in clinical research and better treatment of patients.
New avenues may open in the treatment of neurological diseases
Experts believe that this atlas can prove to be a game changer in the field of neurology. With its help, scientists will be able to better understand Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, brain stem disease and other neurological problems. Apart from this, it can also play an important role in the development of new medicines and creating more precise treatments.
