India has given a stern warning to Pakistan in the United Nations (UN) to immediately stop the ongoing human rights violations and military atrocities in the areas under its occupation. India said the concept of democracy in Pakistan is ‘foreign’, while the people of Jammu and Kashmir are exercising their fundamental rights under the democratic and constitutional framework of India.
India’s strict message to Pakistan
India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Parvathaneni Harish gave this statement in the open debate of the UN Security Council (UNSC) on Friday. He clearly said that ‘Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inseparable part of India’ and Pakistan should stop the serious human rights violations going on in the areas under its illegal occupation.
Harish said, ‘We urge Pakistan to end the serious human rights violations taking place in the areas under its occupation. The people there have been raising their voice against military repression, occupation and atrocities for a long time.
‘Democracy an alien idea to Pakistan’
Harish made a sharp attack on Pakistan, saying that the people of Jammu and Kashmir exercise their rights under the constitutional and democratic traditions of India, but ‘these concepts are completely alien to Pakistan.’
Demand for reform in the United Nations
In his statement, the Indian representative also demanded comprehensive reforms in the United Nations Security Council. He said that this 80 year old framework no longer reflects the current global circumstances. Harish said, ‘Today’s world is not like 1945. The current structure of the Security Council is no longer capable of facing the challenges of 2025.
Global South should get more representation
Harish also said that the voice of the Global South (developing countries) should be given more importance in the global decision-making process. He said that delaying reforms is injustice to the citizens of developing countries. He said that these countries are facing challenges like development, climate change and financial crisis, hence it is necessary to make the decision process more democratic and inclusive.
Message given in the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’
Referring to India’s ancient ideology ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the whole world is one family), Harish said that all countries should work together so that the United Nations can adapt itself to the needs of a new world.
