Local people are extremely shocked and worried by the incident of rape of an Indian origin woman in Park Hall area of Walsall, England. Britain’s Home Minister Shabana Mahmood has condemned the incident through a post on social media. He said that this incident is a horrific crime and because of it there is an atmosphere of fear in the Sikh community.
A man has been arrested and is currently in police custody after a 20-year-old woman was raped due to race on Saturday evening. West Midlands Police is interrogating him. On the incident, Shabana Mahmood wrote in a post on social media, ‘The incident of rape on the basis of race in Walsall is a terrible crime. My condolences are with the victim and her family.
He said, ‘I know how much fear the local Sikh community must be feeling. I have sought assurance from the police and local leaders that they will do everything possible to help all those affected by this crime. Shabana Mahmood said: ‘I urge anyone with information about this incident to come forward and contact West Midlands Police as soon as possible.’
Local councilors in Walsall held a meeting with police on Monday evening to provide updates on the investigation. Councilor Ram K. Mehmi said, ‘I am shocked and disappointed. What happened to that girl cannot be tolerated. Indian-origin Mehmi is the founder-trustee of the local Sri Guru Ravidas Temple in Darlaston.
He said, ‘I have been living here for 61 years and I have never heard of any such case. The local community is deeply concerned as this is the second (racially motivated) attack in the West Midlands. Police had released CCTV footage of the suspect on Sunday. The accused was said to be a white man around 30 years old.
An Indian-origin shopkeeper in Walsall said, ‘I am completely shocked to know about the incident. A customer told me about it and I could not believe that something like this could happen in such a peaceful colony. He said, ‘I am from India and have been living here for a few years. This is a very diverse area and there has never been any racial incident here.
Police had arrested some people after a similar incident happened with a British Sikh woman in Oldbury last month, but the accused were later released on bail.
