India-canada relations: For the last few years on the issue of Khalistan, there has been a sourness in relations between India and Canada. On Friday (March 21, 2025) on the matter, India said that the decline in its bilateral relations came due to licenses to extremists and separatists in the country.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said, “The reason for the decline in India-Canada relations is the exemption given to extremist and separatist elements in the country. We hope that we will be able to rebuild our relations on the basis of mutual trust and sensitivity.” This comment of the Foreign Ministry spokesman has come amid a change in the Canada administration, where Mark Carney has become Prime Minister in place of Justin Trudeau. He was sworn in as Prime Minister on March 15, 2025.
What did Mark Carney say before becoming PM?
Canada PM Carney said before the swearing-in, “Canada wants to diversify its business relations with like-minded countries and there are opportunities to rectify relations with India. Commercial relations should have a shared feeling of values around the commercial relationship and if I am the Prime Minister, I will wait for the opportunity to make it.”
Relationships deteriorated after the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar
The relations between India and Canada deteriorated when Justin Trudeau in 2023 accused the Indian government agents in the murder of pro -Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. India has constantly denied allegations. The Ministry of External Affairs has said that Canada has not given any evidence on serious allegations against India and Indian diplomats.
After the dispute, the two countries retaliated against each other and called back their diplomats. The Ministry of External Affairs said in December last year, “The damage to the India-Canada relations due to this careless attitude is the responsibility of Prime Minister Trudeau alone.”
At the same time, Trudeau had admitted that when he accused Indian government agents in the murder of Nijjar, he had only intelligence and no concrete evidence.
