The atmosphere of Bihar Assembly elections has become even more special this time, because a total of 10 relatives of eight former Chief Ministers are trying their luck in the election field. These also include two women candidates, who are contesting the elections for the first time. With the presence of all these candidates, the tradition of ‘political families’ has once again come into discussion in Bihar politics.
These candidates coming from political families are contesting from ten seats in eight districts of the state, Madhubani, Vaishali, Jamui, Gaya, Saran, Begusarai, West Champaran and Samastipur. Contests in these districts have become high profile and voters’ attention is focused on these seats.
Which female candidate is contesting from which seat?
Women candidates contesting elections for the first time include Dr. Karishma Rai, granddaughter of former Chief Minister Daroga Prasad Rai and Dr. Jagriti Thakur, granddaughter of Jannayak Karpoori Thakur. Dr. Karishma Rai is RJD candidate from Parsa seat of Saran, while Dr. Jagriti Thakur is contesting from Morwa seat of Samastipur on Jan Suraj Party ticket. Karishma Rai is also the cousin of Tej Pratap Yadav’s wife Aishwarya Rai. At the same time, Jagriti Thakur is the niece of Union Minister Ramnath Thakur.
Three candidates from Manjhi’s family in the election race
Three candidates from the family of former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi are in the election race. Manjhi’s sister-in-law Jyoti Gupta is the candidate of ‘Hum’ party from Barachatti seat of Gaya, daughter-in-law Deepa Manjhi from Imamganj and son-in-law Prafulla Manjhi from Sikandra seat of Jamui district.
Sushil Kumar, son of former Chief Minister Satish Prasad Singh, is the RJD candidate from Cheria Bariyarpur seat of Begusarai, while Shashwat Kedar, grandson of former Chief Minister Kedar Pandey, is contesting on Congress ticket from Narkatiaganj seat of West Champaran.
Candidate from Jhanjharpur seat, son of former Chief Minister Dr. Jagannath Mishra
Similarly, Nitish Mishra, son of former Chief Minister Dr. Jagannath Mishra, is the BJP candidate from Jhanjharpur seat of Madhubani. This seat is also special because his father Jagannath Mishra has been MLA from this area thrice and became the Chief Minister.
Lalu’s two sons face to face in Vaishali district
The competition is most interesting in Vaishali district. Here both the sons of former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi are face to face. Tejashwi Yadav is the RJD candidate from Raghopur, while Tej Pratap Yadav is contesting from Mahua seat from his new party Janashakti Janata Dal.
With the entry of these prominent families, the contest for 10 assembly seats of Bihar has become a symbol of both prestige and dynasty politics.
