US President Donald Trump has supported Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral election. Along with this, he has also threatened that if leftist candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the elections, he can cut federal funding for the city.
Trump made a post on the social media platform Truth Social on Monday (November 3, 2025) evening. Trump said, ‘Whether you like Andrew Cuomo or not, you have no choice. You have to vote for him and hope he does a great job. They deserve it, not Mamdani!’
Giving more money to New York is just a waste: Trump
President Trump also reiterated this in a TV interview on Sunday (November 2, 2025), where he called Mamdani a communist. However, Mamdani rejected this allegation. Trump said, ‘As a President, it would be difficult for me to give more money to New York, because if a Communist rules there, the money sent there will be wasted.’ The President had previously said that if Mamdani was elected, he would send only minimal federal funding to New York.
What did Zohran Mamdani say on Trump’s statement?,
Responding to Trump’s statement, Mamdani said, ‘I will take this threat in the same way that it is just a threat, not a law.’ Mamdani has described himself as a democratic socialist and refuses to be called a communist. He jokingly said in a TV interview, ‘I am a bit like a Scandinavian leader, only my complexion is a little darker.’
Trump administration has tried to cut funding before too
The US administration led by President Donald Trump has tried several times in the past to cut federal funding to Democratic-ruled areas. In the current financial year, New York City has received federal funding of $ 7.4 billion (about Rs 61,000 crore).
It is noteworthy that according to the opinion polls of America’s New York City mayor election, Democratic candidate Mamdani has got the lead, while Cuomo, who is contesting the election independently, is in second place. At the same time, Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa is at third place.
