Two Indian diplomats said this on Wednesday (November 5, 2025).
He said it would be interesting to see how Mamdani would fulfill the ambitious promises made during his campaign.
Indian American citizen wins mayor election
34-year-old Zohran Mamdani of Indian origin was elected Mayor of New York City on Tuesday (November 4, 2025). Zohran Mamdani, son of famous Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Indian-origin Ugandan writer Mahmood Mamdani, has defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Party’s Curtis Sliwa. Many experts on international affairs, including former ambassadors of India, termed it a historic victory.
Mamdani’s victory in New York is the answer to Trump’s policies – Rajamani
Senior diplomat Venu Rajamani told PTI that Mamdani’s victory is, in a way, New York City’s answer to the right-wing movements growing in America and the policies being adopted by President Donald Trump. He said that Trump openly supported Cuomo, but people still voted for Mamdani. ‘Equally important is the socialist agenda that he (Mamdani) has put forward, which includes free transport and housing for the poor,’ the former ambassador said.
Democratic Party could not make the right strategy to deal with Trump- Ashok
Another senior diplomat Ashok Kanth said that the Democratic Party in America has not been able to make the right strategy to deal with Donald Trump. So Mamdani is someone who has raised such an important issue for the people of New York, which includes the question of affordability, because everything in terms of buying a house and groceries has become out of reach for them. Kanth, who was India’s ambassador to China, said that Mamdani understood the problems of the people and capitalized on this issue.
