At least 241 people died in the central provinces of the country due to Typhoon ‘Kalmegi’ in the Philippines. Apart from this, many people went missing. Meanwhile, Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a state of emergency on Thursday (6 November 2025). This is the worst natural disaster to hit the Philippines this year. Most of the people died due to drowning in the flash floods due to Cyclone Kalmegi, while 127 people are missing. Most of them are residents of the central province of Cebu. This province has been most affected.

Kalmegi is a tropical cyclone, which moved towards the South China Sea after passing through the archipelago on Wednesday (5 November 2025). Nearly 20 lakh people were affected by the storm’s wrath, while more than 5.6 lakh villagers were displaced, of which about 4.5 lakh had to take shelter in emergency shelters. President Marcos made this emergency declaration during a meeting with disaster response officials to assess the situation after the typhoon. This announcement will help the government to release emergency relief funds rapidly and stop hoarding of food grains and profiteering.

Most devastation in Seibu, villages submerged in water

Cebu province is said to be the worst affected area by the storm. Electricity and communication have come to a complete standstill in many villages. According to local reports, hundreds of people are still trapped on the rooftops of their homes waiting for rescue teams. The Meteorological Department said that Kalmegi hit the coastal areas with a speed of up to 200 km/hour, causing high waves in the sea and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Even after the storm has passed, strong winds and heavy rains continue, causing difficulties in the rescue operation.
